In this Episode, the Crazy Pigeon Lady answers a question from a Subscriber about how long pigeons live and whether mutations in fancy pigeons can cause health conditions that shorten their lives.
I was contacted by staff at a shop - they had a feral that was poorly. I took him in and nursed him back to health (it had a nasty infection in the nasal cavity). That was 4 years ago. I still see him around (he's ringed so I know its him, plus he has distinctive feathering). He's paired off and had offspring too. One of the brighter sides of seeing a successful treatment/release! On the flip side, I've had pigeons come in that I thought I had managed to save, only for them to suddenly pass with little or no warning (and certainly no time to intervene with medication).
I always enjoy your videos and the information you share. This one is no exception. EXCEPT, it does make me think about the inevitable days finding a bird that has passed on, and how it can seem to come out of nowhere. These guys seem spry and healthy right up to the end.
I love the work you do for your videos. I am grateful for your pigeon advocacy! I wish more were on the “bus” with us as it were! One mind at a time, right?
Hi, thanks for asking! The big picture is a mandala I made of moulted Wood Pigeon feathers, the colourful pigeon is a piece of art I made called #glitterchicken, the glass pigeon is Lalique, the yellow pigeon plant pot is a vintage piece and the small pigeon portrait of 'Wyatt' is by Ashley Dietrich who runs Olive's Place Dove and Pigeon sanctuary :-)
Omg... I have a wood pigeon that I rescued. He escaped death about 3 times. He is quite happy living in my cage I made for him about 6 years ago! There is no ways I can keep him for 30 years lol...I need someone with a big aviary to take him pleeeeez lol...
Hey I have a quite small cage 76cm long 57cm high and 53cm wide is this an okey size for not permanent birds? I rescue the sick and injured and most of the time they will be out the cage (depending on there health)
It depends on the situation. My rescue has a broken wing so she needs to be in a very small enclosure Bc she doesn’t have any balance. If the bird is ill and the cage is only for a couple weeks or so I’d say it ok. But do your own research and consult a vet.
hey, was wondering if you could do a video on the breed of pigeons called Birmingham rollers ( the breed im currently obsessed with ). Would love to learn more about them
Thanks for the suggestion! There are hundreds of pigeon breeds and i only know a few well but I may research some and spotlight them in future videos :-)
Hi Brysen, unfortunately my experience in keeping pigeons is only indoors as Ive never had a garden big enough for a loft or aviary so Ive never built one :-( However, there is a book I can recommend for getting started with pigeons and it does have a section on lofts and aviaries - ive put a link below. There are also some pet pigeon and pigeon rescue facebook groups with members there that keep their birds outdoors who may be able to give you good advice :-) www.amazon.com/Pigeons-Complete-Pet-Owners-Manual/dp/0764129910
Hi Rose, check out my Pigeons as Pets beginners guide series playlist, lots of info there to get you started. There will be 10 episodes in all, episode 6 is coming soon! The vast majority of the advice is also applicable to the keeping of doves too :-)
Not outdoors, no. Being a fancy pigeon shes not as interested in flying and exercise. I put the cage outside on a sunny day though and ler her get fresh air and her vitamin d!
