Fun 'Nose Work' Ideas

These ideas can be used both inside and outside the home.
These exercises all help to stimulate and satisfy a dogs natural instincts.
Dogs love to sniff, hunt & find, so why not provide an acceptable outlet for these instinctive behaviours. If you dont, they may find their own way to satisfy these urges. So why not work with them and have fun, there is nothing more enjoyable than seeing a dog with tail wagging, excitedly using its nose.
In this video i have provided just a few ideas on how you can do this and have fun:))
Hope you enjoy.
All my dogs are trained positively with the Clicker method:))

this is by far the best video to teach your dog to smell a scent

Thankyou...Inca was taught to hand target and target many other objects..i just combined the word wait initially when she was touching it to give her an idea that i wanted her to wait with her nose touching it and then very soon i switched the cue to 'sustain'...to mean target until released. hope that helps..i have a video on you tube showing how i taught her hand targeting and how i progressed this to sustaining contact for longer.

I play the first game with my dog who has glaucoma and will become blind. So im so happy for these great ideas, because I think it will really help build her confidence if she relies on her nose more...your a wonderful dog owner, and your dogs are a pleasure to watch!!..:)

I trained our dog to "clear" our house by putting a treat in every room. Now when we come home, I shout clear and he goes and checks every room. Woe be the stranger who breaks in and hides in our house.

I'd be more worried about any treat who breaks in and hides in your house.

That's great, but... do you have her trained to actually... react to a stranger?

I know it's an old comment but I do hope Andy had help for his paranoia.

@@Graeme758 How is that paranoid ? Seems to be a reasonable task. Police dogs do this before the cops enter a house with a suspect. This practice is done in all types of neighborhoods and situations.

Oh, more fun for us! I can't wait to start trying this. I just love your videos. Thanks for showing and noting all the details. It is really helpful to not only read what to do but to actually see it, even the smallest, simplest step. I love that you use items that are easy to find and that we usually have around the house, or can find. Fun to watch them get so excited. You're so kind to share all of your skills with us. Oh, and we're making great strides with our mirror legs work!

The brown one reminds me so much of our old Aussie/Lab mix. In the last two years of her life, her nose failed her, but we still loved her dearly and tolerated her doggy dementia!

This is a fantastic video. I have a friend who wants me to help teach her hound to find her cat (she gets stuck in trees and under beds). I've been searching around trying to find the best technique, and I think the scent cloth could be a good start.

I shall have to try to modify this for my blind rescue dog. She can still get confused on her whereabouts and if excited speeds up and then bangs into alot of things. But she does love to hunt for treats which I also put under plastic containers. Giving her a treat for finding something would be new, as would be the use of a blanket. Fun video!

BeingBeverly I know this was a while ago, but maybe having her in a very controlled environment when playing searching games. One room, everything against the walls, so she doesn't trip, and a calm voice to keep her calm but still wanting to search.

Hum?? Tea bag? I do comp obedience and also use MY scent on all kinds of stuff like sticks/ toys/ even leaves! Is there a reason using tea? Here in the USA we use birch, clove and anese. Sorry about the spelling of the last one. Do you compete? I love the look of your Sprollie! Does this mix work better than other Border Collie mixes? Border Jacks were really popular here a few years back, Oh.... Also Border Sfaffies too for flyball! LOVE your scent you tubes! Kim

@NikolayevKirill Thankyou...yes dogs love food been hidden..will be doing a vid more on this later:) If you look at some of my other vids you will see the scent cloths are used out and about in training. rub your scent on them drop them or hang them off a branch or in undergrowth and send them back to find them. My dogs REALLY love this game:)) The cloths are also really easy to put in your pocket, so you can take a few with you and do a multiple search:)) have fun:))

Thank you so much for putting up these training videos! Enzo is my first dog and all this is new to me. The visuals really help clarify the training concepts I've been learning. I see you use a clicker, I've found my dog to be a bit scared of the sound -- do you have any suggestions on how to get him comfortable with it? He skitters off when he hears it even if I have a treat for him.
@KathCharlton
@KathCharlton 11 лет назад
why is it too much work? dogs were originally scavangers and this is what they enjoy doing. I dont feed any of my dogs in a bowl, i portion it out into using for training/stimulation work like this and they have some in rollaballs and some meat type food stuffed in bones. i once did an experiment with mine putting a bowl down alongside the roll a balls...they choose the rollaballs!?? it was very clear to me from this point that they absolutly love to work for their food. hope this helps x

@KathCharlton
@KathCharlton 14 лет назад
@waileene ok had a go with BArney tonight..if get time will try and vid tommorrow for you. what i did was hold the container with the food in in my hand when i was sat on the floor, the other containers were on the floor. i clicked and treated OUT OF THat container when he went to touch it, i progressed this to longer contact before clicking and treating. I then put the container on the floor with the others and clicked and treated out of the container for touching the right one. :)

@plumwoodposse Thankyou yes Inca indicates really well. i wanted to do this on a person initially but i couldnt get any of my family to stand still for a search they always wanted to be doing there own things...so decided on the tea bag under the blanket..lol! My dogs so love nose work games...trouble is they can hardly contain themselves sometimes and get maybe a bit over excited like Barney nearly bouncing off the walls..lol!

I'd love to know how you teach her to keep her nose on the target until clicked.
@GrandisSilva

I think when first teaching it, you'd click right away, as soon as the dog touches the target. Then you gradually extend the period of time before clicking.

I didnt itentionaly go for a spollie i just saw this gorgeous litter of pups advertised at agility classes at the time...inca stood out to me as she was the only gorgeous choc one...well 9 wks later she came to our classes as a pup to watch her dad run and still didnt have a home so we took her on. i love the mix so bright and so fun loving:)))

I think your idea's r good, but I think that more structure is needed if training a dog for a search and rescue, you need commands, your brown dog is amazing. I did not catch the alerts at first but he looks at you. I would love to work with you. I am a begainer and did not mean to cridize. I am more or less trying to understand S&R training.

@waileene Thankyou...trying to remember..lol! i think i just put the pots out with the treats in and asked which one and when she got the right one i rewarded her. then when she kept getting the right one i just asked her to 'target it', she has already been taught to target items (check out my hand targeting vid) so the progression to this was easy. will have a go with Barney, cause i havent done it with him yet and see how he gets along with it:))
