fun. opens their concert during the fun. US Spring Tour 2012 with "Some Nights" live in Atlanta, GA at Center Stage on 3/9/12. Recorded with a Panasonic HDC-TM90.
oh man. I wish I couldve gone to this, if I had known about them coming to atlanta, I wouldve!! This means I've lost out on two good concerts this year. Dx
I think the fact that he doesn't is what makes it appropriate, I mean a lot of people will probably disagree with me on this but I think when a singer has a good voice and mixes auto tune into the song it can give it good, unique sound..
Actually autotune can be used in a few different ways: one is to correct pitch mistakes as you noted, another way is to incorporate it stylistically as many artists/rappers do more and more, by making it very obvious that there is digital modification of their voice. This is what Fun. did in Some Nights during the Terrible Lies line. And I was remarking that that part in the live version is different (and more easily performed) than the complex, harder-to-perform, album version.
Age dosen't matter. If you're a fan, you're a fan. There are 12 yr old fun fans and then there are 30 year old fans. All go to concerts? maybe not 30 year olds but they don't go to any concerts (unless they're cool...) so if you're 11 and love fun. or if you're the parent, go. Take the kid, See what they're about. Music dosen't have an age.
Just to clarify, you're correct that a vocoder is used in this song, but it isn't at the time of the song I specified, it's autotune. The vocoder is indeed used at many other parts in the song to replicate his voice across designated different notes, (as Imogen Heap famously does in Hide and Seek) making it seem there are many voices in harmony with one another. (But again this isn't the effect I said the live version was lacking. Because it clearly is used in accordance with the studio version)
I think it's about trying to get over a bad break up by sleeping around, and how false love can hurt more than true dislike. The nephew is likely born out of wedlock, he uses women (or men) to avoid dealing with his deeper issues. Fun has a lot of twisted meanings behind their happy baselines, which makes for an amazing contrast.
That's not on them. Nate's goal was never to be famous. Hell, The Format (in my opinion) is still one of the BIGGEST under-valued bands from the whole 'emo/pop-punk' movement in the early 2000's. The face that FUN. is getting some recognition is so deserving because he's an AMAZING musician. Always has been. Love you to death, Nate Reuss.
He's referencing the fact that this is Nate Ruess's band that he started after The Format broke up (much like AVA after Blink 182) yet Fun. doesn't suck and AVA does.
There's only one part of the song he's using autotune. The rest of it is different to get the "chorus" effect. It doesn't autotune his voice, he still has to match pitches. It merely makes chords out of what note he's singing, meaning he has to sing the right note to get the right chord. Lol.
If his vocals are actually that good, then he shouldn't need autotune, period. Autotune strips people of their talent, because you have to wonder how much of the vocal is actually theirs.
Not that this isn't a good performance, but I really want to see him do the full autotune-incorporated high part (beautiful lies line) correctly live at the end of the song..does it exist? Or does he always do the easier version like on this video?
in the real song isnt there a last "oh come on" that is higher pitched, not saying shes a good singer but i dont think she was trying to do the same note
THE MOST EPIC BEGINNING EVER!!!!!!!!!! i hate the fact that all the tickets for the show in my city were all sold out =/ but im glad these guys r finally getting the fame the truly deserve. oh and Nate is one sexy flawless bitch =P
dude thats not a vocoder. Thats autotune. notice how when he yells "I want to hear you" or whatever he says, that it automatically tunes his non musical yell into notes? Who is playing the vocoder? No one. It's probably a stomp box or rack effect.
no but relax. classical orchestras hated when the electric guitar and keyboard came around. now 60s to 80s buffs hate that autotune and all the new age stuff came around. it's the progression of music. how about we enjoy what sounds good?
