Fun fact Every March 17, Mexico flies the Irish Flag in honor for a group of mostly Irish deserters from the US military to join the Mexican side during the Mexican American War. Those deserters join because they didn’t wanted to fight with fellow Catholics. Sadly, since Mexico lost the war, they were taken back to Mexico City just get hung as the American flag was raised over Castle Chapultepec. As well, on the city where the Captain of the squad was born, the Mexican flag raised on the same day.

Always liked Ireland's flag. The colours stand out amidst the sea of flags with red, white and blue.

The harp symbol is one of the items associated with the Irish Gaelic God Dagda, when he played the harp he made the seasons change.

As an Irish person I must inform you that Leinster and Connacht be pronounced Lenster and Connocht. They, like most of the Irish language are pronounced differently as they are spelled.

I'm not sure if this is true, but there's a well known legend in Munster that Francis Meagher had four French women design the Irish Tricolour which makes sense considering how similar they both are, and the fact that each colour has a meaning on the Irish and French flags. And also great video :)

The 🇮🇪 was given as a gift from three French women to Thomas Francis Meagher on one of his visits to France.. There is a direct relation between the two, our flag is based on the French flag.

Nice video as always. One clarification - at 6:20 you discuss the “Commonwealth of England”, saying it was the union of England, Wales and Ireland. However the third flag in there was that of St Andrew (i.e. Scotland). Am I missing something or was he just on holiday ;-P

There’s a couple of flags connected to Ireland you forgot to mention, first there’s the Irish republic flag flown during the 1916 rising, the other would be the starry plough or Camchéachta, which was originally used by the Irish Citizen Army.

Fun fact, the Irish tricolour was designed by a group of French woman sympathetic to Irish nationalism and the Ulster flag was inspired by a legend that claims that two lords were racing each other, whoever placed their hand on Ulster first would become king of Ulster. The one who was losing won by chopping off his hand and throwing it where it landed on Ulster soil thus the red hand on the Ulster flag.

Got to do one in this much detail for Welsh 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 flag haven’t seen any vids going further back than the war of roses and author legend of the dragons but sure the dragon goes back further as flag of Wessex had a similar dragon on flag too and just want to know more 👌🏻

Paraguay is another country that is associated with the harp. However, even though the nation's musical instrument is a harp - it's not depicted on the flag, or coins, as in Ireland, (as far as I know, anyway).

If you think Ireland has had a lot of flags you're entirely correct, not only are the 4 provincial flags still used today but every county within each of the 4 provinces have their own flags, not to mention other more unofficial flags used in various rebellions by paramilitary groups over the years. We do like a nice flag though. I'd say there's maybe over 40 different flags that each represent at least a part of Ireland.

What about the Starry Plough banner?

3:12 Hahaha. Good try. The pronunciations are pretty weird. For Connacht, it’s pronounced Conn-ukt. Munster is pronounced Munn-sterr. Leinster is pronounced Lenn-sterr, and lastly Ulster is pronounced Ull-sterr.
