Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons / techmoan usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version.

@Patrick G It seems that they have popped up at the top of comments sections everywhere recently. There may also have been something in the creator community or from RU-vid itself about how to grow one’s channel as a way to encourage visibility. It’s sort of like the _community posts_ and _community poll_ “hacks” exposed by the _Spiffin Brit_ brought to the forefront a few months ago. I find it interesting that this has happened because if you dig deeply enough into a subject on RU-vid, you will discover comments by your favorite creators because these hyper focused creators often fuel the creativity and knowledge of better known creators like _Adrian Black_ and _Techmoan_ who have an above average knowledge of subject matter and reach a wider audience. Loved seeing this. In addition to being used in the medical field, they were also used in some newspaper photo departments. During my college years in the early '90s, I was a photo intern at The Miami Herald, and we had one of these connected to a video device we would use to preview our photos. It would reverse the negative image and allow us to do quick edits on a monitor without the need to make a contact sheet. The printer was used to kick out quick proofs of photos for reference. We would then glue the printout to the outside of an envelope that held the negative, and send that off to layout and pagination. (This was before photoshop was widely used). Thanks for making this video! Brought back some memories.

We used these back in the studio photography chains I worked for back in the 90s and early 2000s. Just like your selfie setup, we would have a security camera mounted to a Camerz Z-II 70mm film camera. The security camera would run to a computer that would store images every time the photographer triggered the camera, then later with the client, the seller could scroll through the stored images and print them off for the customer using this exact same model of printer. Much like you were saying, when we started transitioning to digital, no one was using the printers anymore, and most ended up simply being thrown away. What a blast of nostalgia I felt seeing you hook up a security cam like that!

Back in 1992 a photo was taken to me on a supermarket during a demonstration with one of these. Maybe the camera used was a Video8 because I noticed some pixelization on it. Another fun fact was that a year later I went to a photographer to took a photo to my school id card and they were using a Video8 (probably Hi8) camera and a color printer (the paper was photographic). Back then I asked them about the pixelization and the photographer made an analogy with a TV screen - smaller screen, better picture. It was a good analogy for a photo with the size of a stamp! I still have the pictures from both ocasions!

One of these was my"test for function" device. You can get big rolls of cheap thermal paper and not know how old they are....needed to test them!

Yes old thermal fax rolls are cheap, and are actually available new. Cutting is easy if you make up a slitter to do the job, or if you have a very fine pitch bandsaw blade, and feed the roll through it.

I worked for a packing & shipping company. Our big contracts were military with Sikorsky, Lycoming and several others. I ran the label department. Two 9-pin dot matrix printers going full bore 8 hours a day plus we had a very cool thermal printer the size of a mid-tower desktop. It printed on any rolled 4" wide label using a thermal ribbon. Print "head" was just a wire that was able to heat across any portion of its width. Speed was incredible.

I worked in genetics for 19 years and one of the things we had to do was run “gels” with DNA that had been broken up sonically, loaded into small wells at the top of the gel and separated via electrophoresis. These gels were then stained and viewed on a high powered UV light. The bands, which represented the “sizes” of the chunks of the DNA that had been pulled through the gel, would then be clearly seen. But obviously a record and something more readily handleable was needed to study the results so a top down camera was used and then the images were printed out on one of these exact machines. The images on them were so good that often it was easier to see the really small, feint, often important bands than it was to see with the naked eye. What’s more, you couldn’t and shouldn’t be exposed to the UV light we were using at the time, even WITH a mask for any prolonged period of time for risk of serious damage to eyes and skin, so these little machines were absolutely invaluable. I have fond memories of taking pictures of all sorts of stuff for the labs amusement with one of these 🤣🤣

👍 Very interesting, thanks. This type of thermal printer has been used in industry for decades. Compact, quiet, reliable, high duty cycle, fast, programmable interfaces of various media types, easy paper refilling and no toner or ribbon for user to be bothered with. For example tickets, baggage labels at airports, receipts, etc. Usually quite expensive when new and the thermal print heads are often expensive to replace. As you say, need to be careful you don't get one that uses expensive or impossible to source paper. Reminds me of the old Sinclair home computer printers (and others of the time). These were thermal. Quite cheap to buy but everyone was a bit miserly in terms of printing stuff out as the paper was so expensive 😄.
