Real world example of a use for a function generator, sweeping a filter. When designing a low pass filter, you do the calculations for your cut off frequency and then lay out the components on a breadboard. The only way to know if it works as planned is to test it. you can test it using a function generator to sweep through a range of frequencies and see (on a scope) where the cutoff is.
