American here and when my mom was dying of cancer, she cooked a year's worth of meals for my step dad and froze them. We thought it was crazy that she would go to such lengths for him. Then, after her funeral, we went back to their house and ate dinner---it was all food that she'd prepared and it was so wonderful. She was nurturing us from the beyond! Yeah----she was pretty amazing.

Fun fact from Ireland - my great grandfather had been sick and confined to his bedroom upstairs for weeks, everyone knew he was going to die soon enough. At one particularly close call, preparations were started and his wife started to cook, because a good Irish stew is a slow cooked Irish stew. The way my grandfather (his son) tells it, he arrived on the late boat from England to say goodbye, and was greeted by his father dressed in his room and standing up and asking to be helped down the stairs to get a bowl of that stew which he loved so much. So off they went and made it downstairs, and his wife didn't want to give him a bowl because 'it was for the Wake' haha. He recovered and lived for a good while after that and the family is split whether the stew revived him or he did it out of spite for the initial refusal haha

So everyone talking about cassoroles and why they are so common- I was taught that you bring over cassorole in *your own dish* so that a week or so later, in getting your dish back, you have an excuse to call or come by the house. The real reason is to check on the person grieving, keep them socially involved and leaning on those around them....or at the very least they will have to get up and dressed for you to come by, imparting some sense of normal for a day. And if a lot of folks bring cassoroles, that's a lot of folks that will be checking back in on the grieving person in the next few weeks. It kinda keeps the person from slipping into their loss and isolating themselves in grief. I think it's for the sender of food too, because talking to someone who just experienced loss can be daunting, and it can be awkward to call a casual aquaintance with nothing to really say. This gives you a reason, and also serves as little reminder to check in on them. Anyways, that's what I was told as a kid.

In the Deaf community, if one of us dies, we usual have a second funeral for Deaf mourners to pay respects. We attend the main service, of course, but the second funeral is just for us. Usually right over food. We sign about our memories for the deceased. What they meant to us. Grieve in our own way.

As a russian person I can say that we have a certain set of meals made specially for the funeral. In consequential order we eat: 1. Kutya-special dish made of white rice, honey, raisins. 2. Bliny-russian pancakes. 3. Hot soup-like schi or borsch. 4. Broth with noodles and chicken. 5. Half plate-pea porridge, other half-buckwheat porridge. 6. And finally Kissel-very thick sweet beverage. Plus plenty of little closed pies with sweet and savory filling (jam/cabbage/potato/green onion and eggs).

My dad didn’t like traditional things like that. When he died last year at 85, he had previously told us for years that he wanted no service, just have a family barbecue and call it good. As we were planning said bbq, Mom recalled that weeks before he died he had made a big batch of his bbq sauce. That’s what we used at his big memorial bbq dinner. It was bittersweet, but almost like he knew what he was making it for.

This isn't a custom or anything - but in the 6 months before her death, my mum, thin from 5 months of chemo therapy, discovered a new love of junk food - and she learned that she LOVED Hawkin's Cheezies (a Canadian cheeto-type snack, but not as foamy - 50 g = 280 calories) - she would go through as much as 200g a day - bringing cheezies became nearly an admission price to get you into her hospice. At her Celebration Of Life, we made sure there were huge bowls of cheezies all over for people to snack on in her honour.

In Mexico, there is a "pan de muerto" what is a large loaf that is covered with sugar on top! I'm looking forward to having some next month and leaving some for family that has passed. We will have an alter for all that have passed, regardless of when or how close we were to them. There are alters that include friends, family, and even celebrities. We leave out water, liquor, their favorite foods, and pan de muerto. In addition to just food we leave candles and pictures of the ones who are dead. We use the time decorating the alter as a time to celebrate life, remember those we lost, and enjoy our family that is with us.

The two things she planned out was way over catering the funeral so we all had to bring home way too much food and the other was a ton of money left over to go to a nice restaurant that night and we had to spend all the money so my conservative Christian Grandma got us all F’ing plastered and I ate like 10k calories.

My most memorable funeral food related memory comes from my Grandmother's funeral too. She was a *TERRIBLE* cook & her most infamous dish was Tuna Casserole. *EVERYONE* in the family *HATED* it! Even our family dog wouldn't eat it - & this dog would regularly try to eat it's own poop! (The Gods only know why. We feed it plenty & the vet said it wasn't suffering from any form of malnutrition so 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️) When my Uncle got up to give the eulogy he said *"Well I know that we're all pretty said about loosing Mom/Grandma. But we can't least take comfort in one thing. The recipe for Tuna Casserole goes to the grave with her."* Everyone started chuckling at this then gradually people started laughing. Untill we all sounded like we were at a comedy festival instead of a funeral. The preacher who was supervising the funeral looked at us like we'd all gone mad. I feel sorry for him but if you had *EVER* had the misfortune of eating her Tuna Casserole. Then you'd have understood why we were so happy to see the recipe go off with her.

It can be different shape depending the region in Mexico, sometimes it can be a bread in the shape of body, with pink sugar representing girls, and blue sugar for boys. But! The most popular is the round bread with a sphere on the top representing the skull and 4 arms like bones representing the bones of the dead. Usually it’s decorated with sugar. They’re so delicious and only made during that time of year. The sugar, chocolate and amaranto skulls are also very popular during this season.

My grandad's funeral (UK btw) was followed with a wake. We basically went into a pub or a club, and arranged a table of party food on the table. There was no music, it was basically a place where people could talk, cry, etc, or tuck in whenever they fancied. Some wakes don't bother with party food, and you could imagine it as a day at the pub but more solemn.

My grandfather's funeral was earlier this week. While it was severely abridged due to covid restrictions and safety precautions, we did our best to ensure that traditions were upheld as well as we were able. My family is Chinese (Taishan area originally, though they moved to HK for safety) and there are a few food practices associated with funerals. The first is a candy, any candy, that's handed to you in a red envelope along with some small amount of money. The candy is to get rid of the "bitter" feelings after a funeral and the money is to be spent in its entirety (none go to savings or should stay in your pocket long). The second is that, under non-covid conditions, there would be a banquet at a restaurant after the burial. This is both to enjoy foods that the dead person also enjoyed, but also so that you don't go directly home afterward. This way any bad spirits would be unable to follow you back home. To the evil spirits that followed us, sorry, that you're stuck at Taco Bell since it was the only place open between our house and the cemetery.
@hoodieninja_7203
@hoodieninja_7203 3 года назад
I find the Chinese idea of evil spirits very fun. They're so easily thwarted and pervasive in the culture that I'm sure there's a million things that are the way they are on account of the spirits. Curved roofs? Spirit deflection. Post-funeral banquet? Evil spirits, not known for their persistence, assume the first place you eat a meal after they find you is your house or something. I really wanna look more into this now.
@galegg

I don't know if other families do this too, but recently my family has embraced memorial laminated bookmarks over memorial pamphlets being handed out at funerals. This is something that I've come to really like because the fact that they are laminated means that they last longer, and the memento of that persons funeral can stay within your everyday life longer because the item is a useful everyday object, and not a fragile little book that can only go into a scrapbook or photo album if you have any want to keep it in readable condition.

So instead traumatized by the whole experience (remove the body and prepare it for the funeral home), I was calm and accepting, which allowed me to handle the situation with a clear mind ------ not the point. All I wanna say is that after the cremation, my dad took me out for a dinner, which all dishes were consist of something made with tofu. Apparently, in my part of China, you're supposed to have a fest made with mostly tofu, and I was not able to get an answer as to why tofu but not something else...

Out of respect for them you don't eat cow/horse meat. That's what I'd heard when my grandma died. But I believe we did ate chicken and fish next to tofu, it was - to my own surprise - an all out feast, commemorating her and there was a joyful vibe. Which I like as my grandma probably didn't want us to put on sad faces for too long. 🙂

...well. I'm a Swede and we served smårgåstårta, regular cake, and soda at the memorial service right after my mom's funeral. Write down how you want your funeral/memorial service to be performed over at Vita Arkivet and/or livsarkivet and leave a note that you have everything written down there where you keep your bills. (also keep your bills and other papers in order, it will be very helpful for your family members that have to go through them when you pass...start now. Anyone can die at any time.)

Feels like smörgåstårta is the new tradition at swedish funerals. I had no idea about those "party favours" in the video though. At almost all funerals I have been at there has been smörgåstårta and the princess cake for desert.

The Capirotada is interesting. I love sweet and savoury foods as well. Especially, if there is cheese. I found one recipe for capirotada which use Monterey jack. It is also known as Mexican Bread Pudding. Mmmmmmm good.

Growing up I was always told “grief is a hungry bottomless monster”. For us, sending food to the family of the deceased was away of removing the burden of having to feed themselves. When my father and grandfather died in 2018, people sent so much food to our house to keep us feed and to offer their thoughts.

As a Southerner, we got a lot of casseroles when my father passed away. However, we are also Jewish, and the Jewish community came in droves to his wake. The cars lined both sides of the street we lived on, almost all the way out to the main road. I remember being given both traditional Southern casseroles, but also bagels and noodle kugel. Noodle kugel is basically a baked egg noodle dish with a cottage cheese sort of filling, and can be either sweet (cinnamon raisin) or savory (aka "plain"). We also got lots of accoutrements for said bagels (shmear, lox, etc) and shiva baskets filled with snacks. Shortly before he passed, we had bought a second refrigerator for the garage, and we were pretty grateful for that. I look back at his wake with a bittersweet sort of fondness. I never realized until then just how much he impacted the lives of those around him. He was a good man.

Casseroles, could be baked, frozen microwaved, refrigerated, reheated and re-served until the dish was empty. On the bottom of the dish would be a strip of masking tape with the name of the donor in magic marker to return the dish. My grandmother kept a particular Corningware dish with a permanent marking of her name that somehow always made it back to her.

I went to the best funeral ever. The lady was a real live life to the fullest kind of gal, and so her funeral was the same. They had gold balloons and candy at the tables. Country music was playing because just weeks before her death, and barely able to walk, she was singing country karaoke at the VFW. While we ate people took turns telling funny stories about her, like how she tricked her naked husband into running outside by turning on the vibrating bed in the hotel room. I never felt so blessed to know someone. I hope my funeral is like that.

It is not a funeral food but in Sicily during the all souls' day we eat "Ossa dei morti" which translate to "the deads' bones". It's a cookie made with two different doughs one is white and the other is ashy in colour, they are infused with cloves and shaped like little bones fragments. The peculiarity is that I'd you wait just a day after they are prepared they becomes rock hard and many people chips their teeth trying to bite into them. You have to hold them into your mouth to soften them. Those combined with the tradition of the souls of your relatives bringing you present and leaving them under your bed made that holiday my favourite when I was a child!

There’s something very similar over in Malta called għadam tal-mejtin (bones of the dead), but they’re made with almond/orange filling, shaped like bones with royal icing piped on top. Of course Malta and Sicily share a lot of history and traditions but it’s cool to see how they’ve diverged slightly!

We have something similar in Mexico for the same day, Bread of the Dead 'Pan de Muertos'. It's a sweet soft bread shaped like a bun, often decorated with bone-shaped phalange pieces on it's top. Usually it's part of an ofrenda, which has the dead one's favorite foods which the living relatives eat. Coco portrayed it beautifully.

Being a Sin Eater sounds like something someone would become to avoid the workhouse. It's amazing (not in a good way) all the ways that people accept the service of someone, then shun them for it. Men who went to war and came back disfigured in some way often had to beg for food, as nobody would hire them; women who were seduced by men (sometimes with a fake offer of marriage), then after the men disappeared, the women were shunned as being unchaste; even people in the many service industries, who are treated very poorly by the patrons who are using the same service (garbage removers, grocery store employees, fast food employees, etc).

I went to the funeral of one of my mom's cousins a few weeks ago. It was in a very small cemetery in a countryside village, and after the inhumation there was a small table with drinks (fruit juice and hard cider) and food (pound cakes) set in front of the cemetery so that people could snack on while giving their support to the family, and catch up as well (my mom hadn't seen these cousins for ages). There was also cigars! Directly from his cigar box, as he loved to smoke cigars. I don't think we have any specific funeral food in France, maybe historically there was but none that I can think of that's done now. But I really liked this little snack table, especially since we were blessed with nice weather, it was really sweet. As an aside (since it's not food related), he died the same day as my grandpa (mom's side) so we had two funerals two weeks in a row 😔 which was a lot. I helped my mom pick the pictures and music for his ceremony, and I had spent the whole week carving a wooden fish for his grave (he loved to fish, among other things). Now, I'm imagining, just like mom wanted music that her dad liked for the ceremony (we ended on joyful musette tunes), I'd love to see a funeral with a buffet of the deceased favourite foods being served, if that's something that was important to them. That's a cool way of honoring them.
