Taken from the "Toys" compilation. Westbound UK 2008. This is a rework of a song by the same title originally performed by George Clinton's The Parliaments. Bernie Worrell and Eddie Hazel at their finest.
this is by far my fav FUNKADELIC era. funk rock 69 to 76 still riding the wave. some will never no. tuff FUNKADELIC i dont care about their shortcomings MUSIC
After hearing the original by the Parliaments as well as the version on Up For The Down Stroke (titled The Goose), I believe that this is still my favorite.
This reminds me of just how good Funkadelic was, and it makes me hold onto the wish that this kind of music will be made again, and will be as popular as it should be. Maybe it won't ever happen, but I can close my eyes late at night and listen, and forget that what might never be again.
yes i like the metal funk from 1970 to 1976. but i seen them n St Louis n 1979 they rocked airbody was waiting 4 one nation n knee deep i was waiting 4 ALICE N MY FANTASIES n COSMIC SLOP
i also got 2 c the late great EDDIE HAZEL n BERNIE WORRELL iwas blessed only thing is i cant remember exactly when i think red bud had something 2 do with that. FUNKADELIC
Love this version! Now we know what this era of Funkadelic sounded like on this song! Love this cd, full of great stuff. This is one of the highlights for me, for sure.
The original Funkadelic claimed at least 2 ELITE musicians and at least 2 GREAT musicians-very few bands can claim that-maybe Zepelin with Bonham and Page and a few others but while the individual members are recognized, the greatness in the entire group’s level of musicianship is really, really a rarefied and under-commented upon fact: the Band was a Group of Very Highly Talented Musicians.
Had an ampex tape recorder back in the day when KDIA The Boss Of The Bay was simulcasting live performances by the best R&B groups of the day when this came on. This was the era when AM radio was the shizznit. Anyway, Cool Calvin Simon had the lead vocals at the beginning of this oh so funky performance and just blew the wheels off. I have a cassette languishing with some hardcore funk in my basement somewhere. Gotta find that funk!
i like this version but not as much as parliaments. but i really enjoy this style of funk despite it having the same notes as a song i like better....now that i think about it, its really trippin me out.....i should put down the bowl but im not....
@@ngang1957 I’m pretty sure the tapes to that show have been missing for a long, long time. I pray I’m wrong but don’t think so. There’s a photo of the OG lineup playing at the Summer Music Festival at Soldier Field on July 18, 1970 (same month Free Your Mind… And Your Ass Will Follow and Osmium were released) that shows a man standing on the side of the stage filming the group, but who knows where that film is and if it’s even still around.

Really? I always thought it was an outtake from Maggot Brain. Same with Magnififunk. If it truly is an outtake from Free Your Mind… And Your Ass Will Follow, I wonder why George didn’t consider it’s addition, along with Heart Trouble? I always wish GC had chosen to actually put more structure to the title track (Free Your Mind…) and used Tiki instead of whoever plays drums on the studio version.
@@parkergauthier5238 tiki.played drums on the entire free your mind album and he played drums on the whole osmium album and the maggot brain album except back in our minds that was fuzzy filling in because the og funks was high except Bernie and tawl who sings on the track with George and Bernie was the only dependable member of the group then

@@chrisedwards3214 We’ve talked this already before lol. Tiki does play on “Back in our Minds.” He doesn’t play on “Can You Get to That.” Fuzzy Haskins plays drums on “Can You Get to That.” And I highly doubt Tiki is on the title track “Free Your Mind… And Your Ass Will Follow.” He plays on every other track on that album though.
