In the prior presentation I hauled an old discharge light from off a warehouse ceiling, but just as I was about to lob the thing onto my van as scrap, I figured maybe it would actually make a rather natty addition to my living room.
Yes, two unpopular lighting upcycling projects in as many months, although at least my icicle light had the decency to be less than two minutes long! Oh, I know this isn’t the kind of tomfoolery you want to see, but it can’t always be about AFDDs, fault finding and getting punched in the ghoulies by angry mad women!

I liked this David, and I disagree that it is unpopular as these are great nerdy stuff videos. What driver did you go for? "Top tip" regarding the spray can is start one end and run steady even strokes with a flick of the tip at the end of the stroke! (Fnar, Fnar) Then overlap the next by 50%, though I agree you can get away with the finish due to its former application. I have no dealing with what you call SON lights which, after consulting Mr Google, seems to be what I know as a gas discharge lamp and was amazed how bright that monster got, albeit at the expense of the spinning electricity meter. Looking forward to the next matey.

Cheers Olly, I like a little off-the-cuff creative number every now and again too. I'm afraid I haven't the patience for painting though. It looked streaky in edit, but the final finish came out okay. As for drivers, it's just a standalone lamp - there's nothing clever inside the box anymore aside from a Zano dimmer.

If you're doing some more AFDD bashing, FYI I'm pretty sure I saw in some Hager instructions or maybe the app, that the RCD functionality is not available while doing a firmware update, implying that it's software controlled. And no, I couldn't get it to trip on any amount of arcing either...

Let me know if you find anything in black and white on that Mike because that would explain why the ProTools app requires circuit disconnection while updating, although someone has posted elsewhere to say Hager told him he could go ahead and update on live circuits.

@@dsesuk That is why they have software updating so they can eventually make it detect arc faults whilst introducing other new and entertaining faults :) Certainly not fit for use at the moment.

Great idea and great vlog, but having spent many years building and working off of rickety alloy towers installing and repairing these lights, having one sat in the corner of my sitting room would just fill me with fear 😂... btw, it's amazing how both high and low bays flummoxed many an electrician when the bulbs went, with the "is it internal or external ignitor" syndrome! The good old days 😅

I said that..! You might have just got away with just the ballast, although it would probably have been somewhat overdriven, but the ignitor pulses didn't do the lamp any favours.

I was in charge of public lighting at my utility in South Australia for over 20yrs & I have tried mixing various components of control gear(that maybe shouldn't be)just to see what happens & usually that is what makes the ballast louder than normal.You(well maybe not you specifically)might be surprised what combinations of ballasts,ignitors caps etc will actually work,not efficiently but they will work.

I worked on an electronics trade counter once, always used to get a chuckle out of "knobs", " have you got a large black knob" would be the usual enquiry lol. Also people used to come in ask if I had rubber feet or any flux capacitors, never got old

thanks for the video i needed a nice short break from trawling through electrical diagrams and technical documentation for a job i have to take over on a hot beverage machine that keeps blowing up control boards. nobody knows why and its getting expensive. its starting to get on my tits. i was thinking a nice flame effect lamp would look good in that fitting.

The reason that failed is that it's a mercury lamp on SON/MH gear. There's an ever-so-slight difference in the way they operate 😋 20:20 Fervently glad we didn't get to see your knob, there are some things that should remain private 😆 Oh, thanks for saving the gear, we can certainly use it, not sure when we'll next be down your way, probably March or April, but we'll let you know. Love from cold wet Aberdeen to all at the Savery residence, especially the 😺😺

Those things are bloody heavy I had to replace four of them in a plastic bag factory in high Wycombe back in 1995 standing on a pallet lifted up to them by forklift. Not fun . .

Some people will always whinge no matter what you give them (even though it's free and nobody's making them watch) so continue doing what suits you. One thing, the link for that bulb from amazon is the same as the link for the presentation converters, would you be able to change it? I wouldn't mind buying some of them, Cheers

I acquired some street lamps when they were changing them over to led lights and these Mercury fluorescence lamps light the bloody room up and everywhere else so no need for any other lights in my home,with just one of the buggers on 😆, I also have somewhere some 300watt incandescent lamps and you can't get near it to turn it off, it's blinding 😎. You can't beat low pressure sodium. We've got a Thorn Gamma 6 in our living room on a timer, it comes on for a few hours in the evening and gives a lovely warm light.

David if I remember correctly the lamps glow pink during a warm up period of about two minutes then turn ever white or orange depending on the type of lamp. But what do I know I’m just a grumpy old spark who’s may well be wrong.

You're not far wrong, warm-up time can vary depending on lamp type and power rating.

@@dsesuk Philips used to make some great stuff. I know a guy who used to design lamps for them, what he doesn't know about discharge lighting isn't worth mentioning. But I bet that Anton Philips would be rolling in his grave if he could see what's become of his once great company 😿

Glad I skipped ahead to the 25minute mark. That was disappointing. I love funky light bulbs and was hoping for a lot from how that bulb looked. I did find a bulb that was pretty cool 10 years ago, I think it was called a galaxy bulb or universe bulb

Love that last bulb it's really funky I wouldn't mind one but I think it's a bit too expensive. I like discharge lighting but I think I'm starting to appreciate that LED can have it's uses I'm NOT about to convert my house to them anytime soon just saying
