In the past few years, the Mosrite-esque Univox Hi-Flier guitar and bass have surged in popularity with players looking for vintage vibe on a budget.  Partially due to their reputation for playability and tone, and partially as a result of their use by the likes of Kurt Cobain, the offset Hi-Flier has developed a bit of a cult following with players that might otherwise be looking to a Jazzmaster. Watch our video for a sample of the Univox Phase 3 Guitar and Bass here, and checkout Reverb for the full story on this unique instruments:

As a Lefty like Cobain, I really love my white Phase 3 Hi-Flier cuz I can flip the guitar and the shape still looks good. I removed the Volume/Tone knobs and pickup switch so my arm doesn't rub. It's light and super comfortable and stock pickups sound fantastic!The neck is also very skinny and it's just really easy to play. The bridge saddles are bad though...it's easy for the string to slip out.I bought mine on Ebay a few years ago for $600. I had to have it, it has tons of nicks and chips but it's a keeper.

I don't like how guitarists on youtube often plays bass palm muted. Lets hear the real tone!

You said it, they are guitarist playing bass, not a bassist; though the tone has it's place, indeed its not the only way a bass sounds.

Why not? Palm muting is a perfectly legitimate bass-playing technique. I use it.

I thought that I heard somewhere that Kurt Cobain's was a phase 3. Not 100% sure though. Either way, still a killer guitar (and bass for that matter).
@j.8366
@j.8366 8 лет назад
Conky Kurt had roughly 4 phase 3's, a phase 4 and a custom one of sorts, as well as a Mosrite Gospel, the guitar in which the Univox Hi Fliers were based on. At the time of his death Earnie Bailey was working on a custom Mosrite with the founders wife as the Gospel was said to be one of his favourites as well as one of the later Phase 3 Univoxes.

I had the Bradley Hi-Flyer (same factory). What it lacked was any natural sustain. It was easy to play and very light. For what everyone's "trying" to get for Univox, I'd go for an Eastwood, they are probably cheaper brand new.
@theUglyManowar
@theUglyManowar 7 лет назад
I had problems with the neck being cheaply bolted. And when I would get more sustain using purple slinky 11s... My neck could never handle that gauge's pressure for more than 2 months at a time. Much about the univox was just plain cheap. Which is a shame cuz it was fun to play and had a fun cheap sound to it.

By buddy Tim bought a Hi-Flier 6-string in '76 & never played it. I bought it from him in '78 for $100 when he needed rent money & I've had it ever since. I re-engineered the Trem so I can now do a deep dive or pull up a whole note, let go & it stays in tune. The moron at Mastery Bridge said it couldn't be done, and he had actually sawed one in half trying. I also swapped out the 3-on-a-plate tuners for 18:1 Grovers & junked the cheap, scratchy old pots in favor of Bourns "Blue" pots & Switchcraft switch & socket. The original Humbuckers stayed. I also have a Strat & a Les Paul. The Uni is my favorite solid body by far.

Danelectro manufactures a Mosrite-y guitar as well called the '66. Played one the other day & thought it was very nice. If you're interested in this kind of guitar I would recommend you check it out. I think they have a baritone version too!

It has the looks, and none of the sound. It's not bad, just don't expect it to sound like a Mosrite.
@theUglyManowar

I bought one in the 90's off the street for about 20 bucks. And it was fun and had a fun cheap character to the sound. Agree the action was nice and fast. Mine even still had the press paddle ( kind of cheap looking compared to the mosrite ) But the necks are bolted down kind of cheaply if I remember right and I could never get it seated right ( as if the string pressure would finally win after about 2 months at a time ) I finally ended up giving it away to a young girl whose eyes seemed to covet it and who aspired to learn how to play it. Dunno if that ever happened. But if so $20 bucks well spent. Can't imagine ever buying one without inspecting the neck unless I was just buying as much for the fun vintage hardware for another piece mod. When yer use to pulling a whammy bar u will eventually do the same to a push paddle. The spring just sat there unattached held by being wedged in place. So everytime I would pull without thinking... the spring would pop out and go bouncing around. Amazingly the spring was never lost.

Just stumbled across this post and you hit the nail on the head. I picked up a Hi-Flyer Bass (1979?) in the 90's as well for dirt cheap. The only issue I had with it over the years is the with the neck. But I love the action and sound of this bass so I still have it 25 years later.

bought mine for $20 and gave it away. ( the neck just couldn't take the gauge of strings I used ) If I ever paid $500 for such cheap craftsmanship it would be for the unique tone of the pickups... which I would use in a better body. It might be a good investment if never played the thing and hung it on a wall. Because I can't see them lasting many more decades considering how cheaply they were put together. ( I would miss that super light hollow body though )

I bought the bass in 1976 new for about $129 for my garage band. I still prefer a short scale. It was stolen in 1980 and when I got back into playing I thought it would be fun to find another. $450!? WTF? You gotta be kidding me! I still want one but I'm not paying that for it!
@roosky203
@roosky203 2 года назад
that was almost fifty years ago, $130 in 1976 is around $600 in todays economy, and people love these things. Gotta love inflation and people wanting to milk every dollar out of everything these days, but if you can find a good one of these i would pay that all day. I have a les paul univox "gimmie" from around the year you mentioned and it beats anything i can get today in that price range
