They can be great huggers. Most of my Danes that have been the stand up to greet you type have always put their legs around my neck, sort of gripped me. I used to have a male Cocker Spaniel that went one better, he made the grunting hug noise when I hugged him LOL

My great Dane died a few months before he turned 6. 5 years is very early for any dog.

Mine passed in 1979 at 7 1/2 years of age (she had a heart murmor). I bought her in 1972 with money I had made as a paper boy. I even paid to fence in yard,food,vet. Her favorite thing to play with was a dug up rock. Showed her for a bit everyone told me she was gonna be a champion. Then they wanted professional handlers & other things. She had won a few before she turned 1 yrs of age. My time with her was fading. So I said no more shows. They all bitched at me but I told them I do not care. I bought her with my money I made to be my companion. That was the end of it. 40 yrs later still think it was the best thing I could have done. Besides when professional handler was working her all she wanted to do was look for me. If I showed her she was a star & I think enjoyed showing off when I showed her but no one else. I miss her to this day 40 yrs later.

The larger 200lbs ish Danes are from European stock, showing their mastiff background. The much thinner, sleeker 140lbs ish Danes are American stock, reflecting the sight/courser hound that were used to develop the breed over the centuries.

b hix That’s not true!!!! Go look at the videos on my channel. Unless it’s a puppy, you won’t find a Dane in those videos that is less than 140 lbs. Right now I’m sharing the couch with my 170 lb AKC champion female from American lines. You might find some females from American lines that are around 140, but not males. Any male that is less than 150 lbs. is from very poor breeding, i.e. a puppy mill or backyard breeder. I have been showing (AKC and CKC-Canadian Kennel Club) for over 25 years. I’ve seen a few thousand Danes in my life. Sadly, the majority of the Danes you see just walking down the street or in the park are very poor examples of the breed. The breed standard in the US and in Europe are almost identical. There is NO reason for a Dane from one country to look any different than another. The short, stocky Mastiff looking Danes are not bred according to the standard.

My poodle stole a loaf of bread off the counter and ran with it upstairs. Luckily we grabbed the bag before he ate all of it. Lets just say he has a thing for bread and pasta. If you leave it for a second its gone

marc mo when my Great Dane was a baby he would sneak into the panty and steak a potato. We would look for him for 30 mins and he would be in the pantry asleep cuddling with the potatos. He was about 5 weeks old. We've had him since he was 3 days old since his momma died.

I had what I called a pit bull and fence jumper. She was found in the ditch on a country road. We went out of town for a few days and father in law was checking on her (he didn't want to) she got into a 10lb bag of potatoes and spread them ALL over the house,each one bitten. She was not a happy dog and he hated my father in law!! Lol. She was a great friend and companion .

I never met a single person who didn't really really like her lol she was something! She's been gone for 2years already n still....one of us talks about her daily!
