Me, my wife and kids ran a mile as fast as we could, screaming.... Wait! - don't leave us! In Cozumel.... There was no one else running to the ship so we knew we were the last ones to get on.... Our hearts were pounding, my kids crying with side aches..... Got back to the ship an hour early.... Yep i had my watch set wrong.... Wife and kids never forgave me... 🤣

@@danwake4431 Those who run the shore excursions with the ships usually aren't more than 30 minutes late. I experienced the airplane version of this. My mother caused a scene with airport security and we almost got kicked off the flight. They called repeatedly for us and we had to do the walk of shame onto the tarmac and then through the entire plane to get to our seats at the back. I never forgave her. Apparently not everyone knows that screaming, "What do you think I have, a bomb?" in an airport is a surefire way to draw attention to yourself.

They should have booted her out of the airport. People who act like that have no business there - only way they'll learn. Here's how I'm guessing that all got started. Your entitled mom got asked to put her crap properly in the box or asked to step on to the search box. She then gets all bent out of shape because someone in security asks her for something. Then she makes that idlotic comment, and I'm guessing that when confronted about it, she got rude. That's the only way I can see that situation escalating like that. I have over a thousand departures behind me going though security, and while there might be hickups or unqualified personnel at times, situations like that is always down to entitled passengers. As a train engineer for a passenger railroad, I am totally going to side with the cruise line on this. Scheduled times are clearly posted. If you’re late, and just casually strolling, I’m just going to assume you are out for a recreational walk and not looking to catch my train, and I will gladly depart without you. On the flip side, if you’re even a min or two late, and run your ass off and make a good effort, I’d be more than happy to wait and allow you on.

Well that's kinda like Kanye West getting upset when he asked the audience at one of his concerts to stand up with him for his next song. He refused to continue performing until everyone was on their feet, and had them put the spotlight on the one person in the crowd of thousands who wasn't standing as told.... because he was in a wheelchair LMAO. And Kanye was still upset with him. I can't run to save my life, never mind to catch a cruise, or a train, so I would do everything I can not to be late to begin with, but if I was late, I'm not going to make an ass of myself in front of thousands of people, by attempting to run despite having an asthma attack, knowing it's not going to help, and will probably slow me down even further than simply walking a brisk pace. And by that point my brisk pace probably looks like a casual stroll because you're in the last stretch. I can understand being left behind, but people being dicks about it singing, laughing, and mocking them seems cruel. Those people just lost out on a vacation they spent thousands on. The people on the ship have lots of stuff to do on board, so they don't literally have to wait for people like the crew does. I sort of get why you would be annoyed to wait, but how can you tell people apart from a glance? A "casual stroll" isn't always what it looks like.

I noticed a nervous pair of fit young Aussies sitting near me. When we got to the port train station, they started running, so I did as well. Turned out they were on a different ship that had already pulled away. They were taken by a small boat to their ship and had to climb up the side. The woman was wearing a skirt. They made it safely onboard. I was able to watch because it turned out that I still had 45 minutes until departure. My dad was on the deck anxiously waiting for me and was not impressed at all. The way I HOLLERED when they came back looking for the ship, I know I'm going to hell with gasoline underwear but I don't care! That mess was funny. They looked for that big ass ship like it could really hide from the dock. At that point, I decided to see how many people would be late back to our ship (Navigator of the Seas). Needless to say, I was crying with laughter at some of these folks. They TELL you when to be back and they sound that loud ass horn! I've seen a video of a cruise ship waiting for an excursion to get back. The harbor master was mad and forced them to unhook and move a few hundred feet down the dock but the captain kept waiting. The bus full of passengers showed up at last. They put everyone on a tugboat and whisked them out to the ship. To my surprise, they dropped a rolling ladder from a hidden door in the back. It was only about 10 feet long so the height of the tugboat's bow made it easy to scramble back aboard. So, yes, if the cruise line sent you out on a shore excursion, they will wait until you get back. However, doing it through a private or third party, all bets are off.

They responded he should have been at the airport at least 30 minutes prior to departure but they would transfer him to the next available flight. He said it was the first time he’d heard of that, ended up storming off threatening to sue the airline, asking people their names so they could be witnesses for him, demanding a refund, telling everyone with in earshot he’d never fly with them again (well, that’s a relief)…..just generally made a total fool of himself. Meanwhile we did an experiment where we created a cargo-passenger ferry called the Mangyongbong 92. For years it transported Zainichi Koreans (Koreans residing in Japan) from Japan to the DPRK for graduation trips, business, and family reunions. The ship carried 200 passengers. But when we launched seven missiles into the East Sea in 2006 (on top of the US suspecting we were getting missile parts from Japanese electronics), the ship was banned from Japanese waters. After this, we decided to refurbish it into just a cruise ship with the goal to boost tourism from China and our southern brothers with trips between Rason and Mount Kumgang, a sacred mountain. The Mount Kumgang area was jointly operated by us and the south until 2008 when a tourist was shot by a soldier. The area was then closed off by the south, and everything was seized by us. The latest time the ship was used was for the 2018 Winter Olympics to bring a 140 performers strong art troupe

I wonder how many pier runners are people who underestimate how long it takes to get from the curb to the boarding gate at an airport and sprint down the concourse, habitually show up late to work, or always walk into church during the first hymn?

"It is not coming back." Truer words never spoken. It would be nice to explain exactly why that is, however, because some people actually think they can just turn the ship around and come back. Or just sit there and wait for their tardy behind. They assume it's like any boating excursion. They don't understand.

I have seen several people get left behind in cruise ports. Most of the time, they were so late that we didn't see them run up. When they did, that was funny. The funniest was two ladies and all their kids (and all their shopping bags) ran up just as we were pulling away. They had to get on the pilot boat and get swung over on a rope. Their husbands were on the ship and screaming at them. Hilarious. Everyone was taking photos/videos.

Unless I am an official excursion I always make it a rule of thumb that I am back in time for tea or at least a couple of hours beforehand. A few years ago we were leaving Honfleur in France. En route to Le Havre our coach was blocked at a roundabout by strikers and we were held up for a long time. I was glad it was an official excursion and they would wait for us.

In the Caribbean you can visit multiple islands a day with only a 2-3 window gap of each. So that wouldn’t really work being 2 hours early.

I remember being on one ship who was super delayed by like 3 hours, a whole ass family of like 11 were missing. Mind you it wasn’t completely their fault, they had taken a excursion/tour with a local and the van broke down deep in the island. I think they never made it back on and they were left behind. I hope they had travel insurance.

We sat by the lounge windows in Juneau (cabin was on the other side) and watched people come back. It's surpring how many people, even with taking a cab, still have to sprint from the cab stand to the gangway.

It’s why they recommend you do shore excursions with companies tied to the cruiseline. If they run late, the ship will wait. But if you have made your own arrangement… they won’t wait.
@blessedlady2038

@AussieRagdoll the majority of independent excursions know the ships schedules and will get you back on time. These are people who go their own way and possibly after too many drinks and good forget the timings, posdobly travel too far away for thst perfect beach, do not know local bus and taxi schedules and it ends up with them being late. Some just don't care. Are repeat cruisers and repeat offenders. No respect

I was almost one of those pier runners. The ship stopped in the port of Toulon France on the Mediterranean. There’s nothing interesting at the port and it’s a Naval base so you really have to know what you are going to do when you got off the ship. I researched that a train passes through every hour so we took the train 30 minutes west to Casis and took a boat ride to see the calanques between Marseille and Casis (Calanques are unique tiny “fjord-like” bays on the Mediterranean. They’re very beautiful.). Casis is a wonderful tiny town hugging a small bay with interesting food choices. We got back to the train station that had a train that would get us back to the port with 3 hours to spare. No trains. No one spoke English and I spoke no French. Finally, by sign language we understood there was an equipment issue with one of the trains blocking the tracks. Luckily, we had our passports and a phone. We called the port authority at Toulon who told us the cruise ship was aware and there were hundreds of marooned passengers due to the train issue and they were delaying departure. When we got to the Toulon train station, we had additional stress because every cab in the region was busy picking up stranded passengers. It turns out we arrived at the gangway about 10 minutes before the original departure time. We delayed departure for 2 hours for the rest of the passengers.

And that's why I normally stick very close to the port. Even if there's something I absolutely *MUST* experience that's further away, I'm always hyper-wary of possible delays.

Only pier runners I’ve ever seen were at Atlantis. They were so mad when they got to the end of the pier and had to watch us sail away they threw their bag on the ground, not realizing how close they were to the edge and it bounced into the royal blue waters of the Caribbean. Also a good tip I think is to book your excursions through the cruise itself, that way if it runs over the ship will usually wait for you
