We’re only young once, but we can be immature indefinitely. So enjoy it! Michael Palin being sternly serious is funny enough by itself, which made him the natural choice for that role. Watching _Flying Circus_ episodes, I noticed more instances of him struggling to not crack up than anyone else, but he also manages to keep it together in the face of the most absurd stuff.

The extras were told, that the scene can only be recorded once, and if they botch it, they won't be paid, but no more info, so their reaction were 100% genuine. Also that hearthy laugh after "incontinentia Buttocks" is the cameraman, who (by the legend) also had no idea about the scene.

Watching this as a little boy, I had no idea Why Biggus Dickus' wife would be called incontinentia buttocks. Makes more sense now. Teehee.

I don't know for sure, but the lore goes the extras were threatened with docking a day's pay if they laughed. Of course there was laughter and the threat was shown to be just joke in itself.

Being a Brit I was lucky enough to grow up with a weekly serving of Python on the TV, and teenage years were spent repeating sketches to each other ad infinitum. Everyone knew who they were and either got it or didn't. The great Spike Milligan paved the way for them (he has a cameo in Life of Brian) and they very quickly became part of a British Institution. Terry Jones has also passed away, back in 2020. Do you really need sub-titles to understand English?

It never ceases to amaze me that people don't pick up on the "Incontinentia" joke. It's a play on words, like Incontinent. Also, I've listened very carefully to when he says "Buttocks" & I think he says Buttocksqueek but it's drowned out by the burst of laughter Maybe someone else can tell.

You missed the continuation of this scene, when Brian is recaptured and Pilate is being visited by his friend Biggus Dickus, who also has a speech impediment.
