It's almost universally understood in the English-speaking world as meaning 'thank you', much like people say 'ciao' even if they don't speak italian. It's just become part of the English lexicon. He may well speak more Spanish though. UK residents visit Spain more than any country in the world, it's a very popular holiday destination.
