Excellent video , I trapped Muskrat when I was younger, now getting ready to retire and may get back into trapping to keep myself occupied. Love the whole process.
So what you're saying is remove every staple because someone may cut their self and then you will be downgraded. They discouraging people from using staples because there is always one random staple which will mistakenly be left. Maybe it is better to not use staples just for the risk factor even though it's nicer product display?
Great and informative video. I live in the NE and never really had many beavers in my area. I've trapped Muskrats, Racoons and Fox in the 70's until the market collapsed. I however NOW seem to have an abundance of Beavers in my area and still have several 330's. I would just like to trap at least one for my wall and to try the meat. Thanks for the video, brought back many FOND and OLD memories.
Maybe mentioned already. I do one thing different. A big magnet in a pillow case right in the middle. Toss staples and the magnet will pull them in, over a container remove pillow case and staples will fall right into a bucket. A quick sweep will pick up any loose staples or if something is left in the hide it will try to lift as an eye catcher. Eezy peezy
There seems to be no answers to the questions on how much the hides are worth. Without tanning, how much is that hide worth, just stretched and dried like it is?
Well done...a lot of work for one pelt. Can't imagine what the fur trappers did in the early 1800's...no electricity, all outdoors, crude instruments, etc. And they prepared 100's...well done and very informative.
I wonder if you could rig your stapler to essentially hold a bobbin for like sewing machine on the back of your staple. Then useing like a really durable but thinner thread like the waxed thread to make knife cases, wallets etc. So leather work stuff. Run a type of guide under your stapler to under the middle of the staples and over the lip of the stapler so you dont staple your thread. And thread your thread through the guides. Then as your stapling your running a thread under each one. And when your done with your whole process and ready to remove your staples you grab your both ends of your thread pull upwards and just pop all your staples out? If your get a durable thread that is wax you could potentially use it multiple times because the wax absorbing any flesh smells of bateria would be minimal and you could quickly rinse. Only two potential issues i can think of is depending on the tanning method ifs its harsh enough could potentially break or damage the thread. Or depending on how tight the staples are pressing the hide down it could leave thread marks on the hide. Might be more work then its worth but once set up i could see potential on just making things alittle bit quicker qnd efficient. Probably not worth it if only shaving of alittle time but might save strain on your hands depending on staple removal. Not sure if you still do this method since this video is super old but thought i would mention since this is literally only day three of looking into trapping into a alternate to hunting and cant try this myself for awhile anyway. Super informative video and hopefully i can figure this all out so i can try these techniques for myself! Excited to have found your channel!

Things have sure changed since the 80s! My trapping partner in Wyoming was from Minnesota, where he trapped with his sons and over the years we trapped together, in Wyoming, they also trapped in Minnesota. They got over 300 Beaver that winter season, there and did them in the oval that they were used to selling them in, there. He brought them out here and was downgraded on EVERY one of them because they weren't round! He was pissed, and I suppose, rightly so! I told him, but he wouldn't believe me that the buyers out here wanted them ROUND and NOT OVAL! I always got top dollar for my skins and earned the compliments of the buyers, both locally and Nationally. At that time, there were only local buyers and few, if any of us were catching and shipping to National fur houses. No ears were cut off andthe leg holes were almost always left open without any downgrading. Loved your series of 4 videos! THANKS!
Great vid! I think you could even speed it up a little more if you have a container for staples recessed into table between you and where your hands are working. Definitely have my wheels turning on the staple scene ive always nailed and need to try staples. Beaver opens tomorrow. Thanks for sharing

I'm new I'm just going to start trapping when you put on the board is the fur already dry how long does it take about to get the gristle off the back and how quick do you have to get this done if you end up can you put in the refrigerator or do they have to be done right away
You RU-vid guys are always looking for content that’s interesting why don’t you do 1 pelt from each animal you trap and do your best to get top lot! And follow the process all the way thru I’m sure NAFA would love too show how to get top lot on animals I know I’d be glued to my inbox for updates ! And I know my processing needs some help I get maybe 1-3 animals a year in top lot ! And they’re almost always the ones I didn’t count on lol !!!
Another great video bud. i will have to try the staple method as it appears it takes no longer than nails. And yes good caution:remove every staple otherwise Mr Furgrader wont be happy. Going out today after some beaver/rats as our ice just went out. Will see how much the rats are bitten.

I might have missed it if you had said it but " How many dollars do you think you could get for that pelt at the time with the market as it was ?? " I'm just curious to learn if a guy could make a small living by doing this during the winter months.-Thanks for the vids.
It would be very tough, especially since beaver pelts only run 15-20 for big ones, but maybe if you had a place with plenty of beaver and you were selling the castors, skulls, and possibly even meat if you weren't eating it too.
