While treatments can be controversial, they help provide a market for a wide variety of qualities of natural gemstones, which helps keep the supply chain going. Ruby, the king of gemstones, is no exception in often being treated. The degree of treatment varies from none to minimal to a total make-over and can affect value accordingly. About Flux... When you size a gold ring. In order to not get fire scale on the setting. You coat the whole ring & stone in, "Jewelers helper". It's alcohol with borax dissolved in it...then when you heat the ring the flux gets heated automatically melting flux into the star sapphire...
