I like how the aqua coat looks- it looked like it was quite a bit of work though- seeing you use the belt sander was cool- as always thanks for the video 😊😊
I loved it. How much easier the process is with a belt sander. What brand and motor size should we use? Great choice. So much better than my puny palm sander.
We used to foster dogs for a rescue. One of our fosters chewed a corner or two off the wood edge of our slate coffee table. My husband found metal corner covers online. They were not too expensive, easy to install and gave new life to our coffee table. That was years ago and it has lasted through many more foster dogs.
Ethan Allen design, quality and character PLUS wash/pickling look has been my favorite for decades. You did it all justice. Absolutely beautiful and timeless IMO. ❤️
Finding an Ethan Allen piece for $3 is a total score and the way you refinished it is beautiful, my favorite finish style! When we had two lab puppies years ago, they were chewing on my oak rocking chair along with other pieces, our vet suggested applying a small amount of cooking oil along with the smallest amount of cayenne pepper. It did the trick. It never harmed them and they lived to a ripe old age.
She did a terrific job, didn't she? I'd love to learn where to find a $3 Ethan Allen table. That was a stroke of luck. (or perfect timing, IDK ) All I ever see where I live are some real pieces of junk. LOL.
I now have the solution for a saved project that i have stared at for years. Thank you. Ut has been a joy to wstch your teaching. A smile makes all the diff, doesn't it? Stsy well, all of you. Even pup. Been there, done that. No stories that we all jnow anyway.
Your videos are my favorite. You have a great way about you---and your videos aren't long! I redo furniture---it's been about 8 months. Not flipped anything but I'm a little obsessed. Thanks!
Loved your video. I'm now a subscriber. This was a finish I've never seen before. Almost like that "pickled" finish I've seen on furniture. It looks fabulous. I've only had a palm sander, but I now see the major difference a larger, more powerful belt sander makes. The color finish looks beautiful and fits with your decor. Now I've learned the technique and products you've used. Well done! Thank you.
I agree. I get tired of seeing so much chalk paint. IMO, paint should be used as a last resort, if you have to use a lot of wood putty/filler. Or if your wood has problems taking an even stain. Never thought of using paint remover on the intricate parts that are hard to sand. I learned so much from her!
You probably already know how to repair the old coffee table but if not, hot glue an undamaged corner to create a mold and then fill the mold with Bondo and place it over the damaged corner. My "culprits" chewed the corners off the baseboards around the posts and off of the nightstands and one chair arm. Love the cerused look!
yes! Thank you! I have done that on some nightstand's so I will have to revive the old one again by doing that! thanks for the tip and thanks for watching!
Came upon your channel while browsing. Watching you transform a $3.00 Ethan Allen coffee table, I had to subscribe. First scratches & all, getting anything Ethan Allen for $3.00 is a big score, especially when someone with your talent does your magic. Second, your transformation is beautiful, I’m really glad you didn’t stain it. Now, I have to start playing catch up with your videos, which I’m looking forward to. Thanks for sharing your talent.
There is a spray called bitter apple. It doesn’t damage furniture and will taste bad to chewing animals (cats too!). Also, I would pair this option with providing the yummiest rawhide bones to make sure he has a better, tastier thing to chew than the bitter apple. My pit bull had the same issue due to separation anxiety so if you go somewhere and leave him home alone, keep him out of rooms with nice wooden furniture or maybe in a kennel if he’s used to kennels or likes tight cozy spaces. Good luck!
I’m looking forward to getting an orbital sander for Craft work and I’m going to need it to refinish the top of my dining room table. I’m so glad you didn’t paint this beautiful Ethan Allen piece and also happy that you reused the handles. I think you could’ve used watered acrylic paint for your wash look - probably cheaper? But it looks lovely.
Dogs respond very well to the command “OUT”! Bark it a little bit. It makes them back up. If they go towards someone. Or go towards the street. Or fire. Or your sandwich. Or the coffee table!! It works so well because it’s the sound mother Dogs make to imply danger to the pups. Like I used to say to my children “It’s not a toy” ! When they were too little to handle glass Knick knacks. Or if they were beginning to put a chunky book towards their mouth “It’s not for your mouth”!
Love the subtleness of the Aqua Coat, the wood takes on the ceruzing in a soft way. Would you do on a dining table ? i would love the surf prep- belt sander after that !
Amazing find! Beats table! Gorgeous color wash! I would prefer to get my hands on the surf prep with the foam attachments that allows sanding on curved surfaces. I remember the old table that the dog damaged...! This new one us also perfect for your living room. The only way he wouldn't damage the table is if you put some of his toys in the space and maybe don't let him unattended in there. Thanks so much for sharing
Great result. I'm glad you didn't add a darker stain. Dogs will be dogs; it's good to show people these things happen and to not punish the pet who does not know any better. Can you spray the "new" coffee table with Dogs Off? I think it's indoor/outdoor.
I have 3 dogs that love to chew the corners of my woodwork. I tried everything from spraying the molding with bitter apple to spraying the dogs with a water gun when I caught them in the act. I finally broke all 3 of woodwork chewing by rubbing a little hot sauce on their favorite chew spots. They each chewed once, drank a whole bowl of water and haven’t touch the wood since!
Oooooh❣️ soooo beautiful ❣️. I think I would like to try the Aqua Coat, since we were just gifted a belt sander… 🤭. I always learn from you. This was really nice. -Jill 😘
Looks fabulous!! I have some beautiful pine furniture in my bedroom that needs a makeover and I am going to do just what you did. Mine has been scratched up by my kitties who think they can use my dressers as scratching posts… argh! Gotta love our pets but wish they would stick with their chew toys and scratching posts!!
Yes Wendy!! I'm going to have to try something on this new table bc it's only a matter of time with him! At least he doesn't go for the couches, just my coffee table! this will work great for pine and really easy to apply. You have to sand quite a bit but if you set aside a few days you will be just fine and have some really beautiful pieces at the end!
Thanks, Cara (or is it Kara?)! And I definitely will invest in a Surfprep sander, thanks solely to you! I actually have a belt sander and now will plan to use it. Thanks for teaching us and showing us! No fear!
That's so great@@WWKofWHR ! I was shocked and then a little upset with myself (lol) for not trying the bet sander sooner! Would have saved me loads of time these past 4 years! If you make the plunge on the surfprep here is my code to save a bit of money. I got the one with out the vacuum to save but I wish I would have just gotten the vacuum attachment one. live and learn! have a great week ahead! New tool I would choose a router. I’ve really been wanting to make my own friends here for sometime that while to bit intimidating I know I have the creative flare and design savvy to pull it off. Routers are really cool and I’m definitely going to be investing one very soon to do my own customwork
I really want to try the aqua coat. The finish is fabulous. I think some furniture is white washed too pale. This effect is subtle and dramatic at the same time. Will order from your link as soon as I get the right piece to use it with. Right now, my garage is crammed with "projects". Wonderful job!
That’s awesome! It’s so nice when you can find quality flipables at great prices! One day, I would love to add the festool sanders that you can use on rounded surfaces.
Thank you so much! I appreciate you tuning in! Hope to see you next time! and I agree Cindy, I think my surfprep has been my best investment so far but my festool is a close second!
We have a belt sander, but at 77 years of age (me) I just don't want to use it. I'm getting a soda blaster to use instead. I'll use walnut shells in it, so it's environmentally friendly and the walnut shells will decompose in the lawn.
The coffee table is beautiful! And regarding your puppy, maybe you could watch some Cesar Milan episodes. He shows how to claim your home, your furniture and your space. Now your pup thinks it’s his table, but if you properly claim it then the dog will never touch it again.
