Thanks so much, for all these great tips!! I LOVE your work and I want to attempt changing my bedroom furniture by using your techniques!! ... I'm almost brave enough, but not quite! 😄 I would say my favorite tip for painting furniture is to paint the underside of the piece first.
I have two of your favorites. I painted kitchen cabinets with chalk paint about three years ago and they were OK. When the new counters and back splashes went in and it was a continuous look up to the bottom of the cabinets. Sanding that thick, thick chalk paint off has been a battle but I am winning. I love your use of the brands of paint we see and are lighter and easier to handle. I love the sponge roller idea. Your finishes look great. Thank you for bringing this information to us. I know these cabinets will look much much better this time.
Coming from a Canadian furniture flipper, everything you mentioned is amazing however the Bin primer, general finishes and tack clothes are SOOOOO expensive that it eats into our profit :( bin for us is almost $40.00 a qt, tack clothes over 5 dollars a piece and they're disposable and general finishes is $58.00 a qt! It sucks
I have a rocking chair on my porch that is painted but some of the paint has come off. I want them to be a wood finish but I know it will be a lot of work to sand all the spindles. Is there a paint color I could use that’s the color of wood that I can put in a paint sprayer? Or can I just use stain? Would I have to sand down completely?
BLACK BEHR CHALK PAINT PROBLEMS, Do you know how to fix the chalk marks black noir or dark secret chalk paint makes? I have tried 3x to redo a beutiuful Sideboard and get the same results? the top and other parts continue so show chalk marks. I thought when I applied the wax the chalk marks would not show? it still does, I will never paint with Black chalk paint again. PLEASE HELP! Behr MFG, did not give me any good advice? I tried chalk paint brush, high density roller and regular nylon brush, no difference. I hate to give up, because it such a beautiful sideboard with nice character. Original Walnut from the '50s.
Hey hey BYU! ❤️ 😂 at one point in my painting career I had labeled which topcoats had “too many bubbles” not realizing it was because I had shaken them vs stir 🫣
Hi Shannon; I love Behr paints too; i make my own chalk paints using flat Behr paints, to one sample size I add 2 Tb. of calcium carbonate diluted in a bit of water and the adhesion I get is amazing! I finish with wax or polyurethane. My question is: If i prime like you do, then paint with Behr satin, do I have to poly coat or can I skip the top coat altogether? Thanks for sharing your experience 🙏
Hey Ninna!! I’ll have to try your recipe! In my experience, you do not have to topcoat w/satin finish or semi gloss but I usually do if I’m selling the piece or if it’s a high traffic piece. I’m planning to do a scratch test video on my most used paint finishes bc I’m curious if the durability is as good as I think it is!
@@lauristandley4359 hi Laurie, a sample size of paint it’s about 8 oz. to that I add 2 Tb. Of calcium carbonate mixed with 1 Tb of water till it resembles pancake batter, then mix it in thoroughly. I don’t like mixing and entire quart, I do batches depending on the size of the project. The quart is 32 oz, so that would be 8Tb. Of powder and 4 water or more, feel free to ad a bit of more water to get the consistency you like on your paint
Great video. I'm glad to hear someone else who knows that latex paint is fine for furniture. BTW, what color is that lovely piece behind you? It's gorgeous.
Amen! Crazy ppl?! Like what do you think is on YOUR HOUSE??? Its not peeling off your front door haha! I’ve got a video on that dresser in the back you can see the whole process on it ❤️
I have a large black colored Moroccan bed with metal type pieces embedded throughout the design. It needs to be freshened up & I wondered if you had any thoughts on how best to renew the wood when the design also contains metals. Do you think I could just go over it all with one of the waxes you use as a topcoat after painting furniture? Parts of the bed just painted black without metal (eg along the side of the frame) have chipped over time too but I think I can use flat black paint to renew that. I just don’t know how to deal with the rest. Thanks for any advice.
Hi Shannon, thanks for another how- to video. This is helpful. I'm trying to finish a table and give it a faux wood or reclaimed wood look. I sanded and primed with zinser, but didnt sand the legs. Also, zinser primer is very thick and doesnt give a smooth finish. I'm worried about the texture because of this. Also, is there a reason the paint needs to have a sheen? I have eggshell paint because I thought the stain on top would grab better? Your thoughts?
Hey there! Don’t worry about the texture of your doing the wood look and I use satin or semi gloss because otherwise the paint peels off on me when I use the broom at the end. And you don’t want the paint grabbing the stain too much anyway because you need the variety of colors to get it to look like natural wood. Good luck and I hope that helps!!
Thank you for the tips it’s very helpful, sometimes a small mistake can cause a much bigger problem , use to use a paint that said don’t need to prime , but now my piece it’s all yelling fortunately those pieces was not for sell just for me. Now I prime all my pieces with a good prime to avoid yellowing in the future.
Hey Shannon it’s me again. I have a question… I noticed that you put water base over oil. I did not think that you could do this and do you have to wait a specific time in order to apply the water base on top or vice versa?
I use oil over water and vise versa all the time with zero issues ❤️ def make sure they are fully dry first but I don’t wait for them to cure bc cure time is crazy long on some paints and ain’t nobody got time for that! I’ve never had any complaints from customers!
I use a tack cloth to remove dust before I paint, sometimes if I wait between steps a few hours some dust is on my piece so will use the tack cloth then too but usually just right after I clean and sand I use the tack cloth and then start painting ❤️❤️❤️
Hi Shannon I’ve been following you for awhile and love all of your advice. I just recently painted a piece black using Behr premium. My question is can you use a wax to highlight the distressed areas I was planning to do? Always used chalk paint and this Behr is all new to me. Thank you!
Hey Sue! You can use wax over any paint of your choice to add to the look and or to give more protection. My current favorite paint I discovered on accident and it’s my new obsession, it’s the HGTV paint ay Lowe’s, really legit stuff and it has a more chalky finish than Behr!! Ill always love Behr too but I’ll be doing a video on that paint soon so be on the lookout.
Thank you Thank you Thank you!! I’m soooo happy that I found you and I’m happy that I FINALLY found a technique I’m going to love doing. I’m a beginner flipper and I did get sucked into buying ALL the boutique paint! I want to learn all I can about painting my furniture to look like pottery barn. I bought a big huge armoire and I’m wondering if I could ask your advice on what colors I might paint it. Please let me know if I can send you a photo of it and perhaps pick your brain for a few minutes. Thank you so much!
I’m glad you’re here! Oh yeah, I bough like all of whatever Jamie Ray vintage told me to in the beginning and it’s great paint but yep, you don’t need it to have a beautiful end product ❤️❤️❤️

Hello, have u met Annie Sloan...she never uses primer or rarely sands her pieces...her paint is amazing and really adheres to the furniture. That’s my experience with her paints. I do clean the piece really good.
Hi Linda, can we use Annie Sloan on something that is already waxed. I refinished a bed frame and when it’s done it doesn’t look nice . Where should I start again
