(Part 3 of 3)
This documentary gives an inside perspective on the strange and interesting subculture known as the furry fandom. Filmed at Midwest Furfest 2010, a major furry convention, the fandom is explained by furries in their own words.
This project was both a personal and an academic undertaking. The concept and production was my own, but I also got college credit for producing it, as an independent study at Bradley University.
-- NOTICE -- Any comments posted plugging your website, art page, etc. or those of your friends will be deleted, no matter how friendly. My documentary is not ad space.
Also, to clear up some confusion, "niteskunk" is a good friend of mine and was the crew member who captured some of the b-roll footage, as well as the audio for the interviews. He is not, however, me.

----------
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This was a very lean production in terms of budget, equipment and crew. All filming was done in existing light. Primary camera was a Canon EOS 5D Mark II. Secondary camera was a Canon EOS Rebel T2i. Lenses used were Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II, and (on secondary camera) Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM.
In-camera audio was captured only for sync reference and not used in the final output. Off-camera audio was captured using an Olympus LS-10 linear PCM recorder. Voice-overs were recorded during post production using a Sterling Audio ST55 condenser mic and brought into my PC for editing through a Yamaha MW10 mixer.
Slow motion sequences were shot at 30p, then time stretched using motion vector interpolation, and output at the project frame rate of 24p.
Post production took a little less than a month, though as with so many projects, the majority of the work was concentrated toward the deadline. The production officially wrapped on December 15th, 2010.

Honestly I had a pretty skewed idea of the "furrie" community before watching this documentary. I sought it out specifically so I could get a better glimpse and to understand. Understanding is the main reason people can love or hate something. When we do not understand something, we tend to demise, hate, and push it off to attempt to brush off that uncomfortable feeling of mental cognition. As a creative person myself, I have a better understanding of the fandom and no longer feel as negative toward it as I once have. If it's a productive, nonharmful way to express yourself through anthropomorphic causes then what's the problem? There are a plethora of ancient religions, cults, et cetera that have used these types of figures to represent their gods or personality traits. This, in a sense, is just a modern form of this art. Thank you for opening my eyes to this community. Although I do not have a care to be a part of this, nor do I approve necessarily of the "yiffing" aspect, I now have a greater appreciation for the subculture.

@JMPERager
@JMPERager 10 лет назад
Indeed, same should be with the brony documentaries...
@TrueChaoSclx
@TrueChaoSclx 10 лет назад
JMPERager Mmmm... Though, with the current way many Bronies act these days, I can see where the negative opinions come from. Now, I'm not anti-brony, just to clarify. I have some good friends who are bronies. It's just unfortunate that there are many ruining it for the masses. THOUGH, things have got a lot more tame over the last half year, so you guys are heading in the right direction ^^ As for the negative opinions similar to the Furry community, there's not much anyone can do about it =/ ... the second ANY sexual material surfaces in any fandom, they'll be forever judged by it until the other content can far outweigh it. But thinking everyone fits that demographic just shows you're ignorant and closed minded.
@JMPERager
@JMPERager 10 лет назад
TrueChaoSclx "Ignorant", "closed minded"? Nonono, I mean I agree there are a lot of bronies who are just complete assholes and that I'd rather not meet. But, from my experience on the internet, people don't really hate on furries more thinking they're extremely deviant and weird, that they hate on bronies. I mean all can connect their personality to an animal, but liking a TV-show originally aimed at little girls and their parents seems to be upsetting people a lot and making them think you're gay because you like ponies and such a TV-show. And when it comes to the sexual part, well I wasn't aiming at that at all. I was aiming at the documentary as a whole. This documentary and the 1h 20min brony documentary someone did has a lot of similarities in the way people treat us. Bronies have been around for a shorter time than furries obviously but we both are facing pretty much the same problems since we are in fact very similar comparing to other fandoms. And saying no to that is pretty closed-minded Now if I was saying we had more problems or more serious problems that would be ignorant and closed-minded.
@TrueChaoSclx
@TrueChaoSclx 10 лет назад
JMPERager My "ignorant" and "closed minded" comments are towards the idiots who think along the lines of "all bronies are freaks and a blight on the human race", just to clarify ^^ Furry hate has gone down a bit in the last few years, I'll admit, but it's still around and quite heavy in places. I mean, just look at the comments on the first part of this documentary. It seems the sudden rise of MLP has drawn a lot of the haters off our backs, because they found an even better demographic to target. Though, I can't comment on media attention... How's that been to you guys (if you know)? Also, people will think you're gay for anything BUT being with a girl (or guy, if you are a girl). I put that down to social brainwashing, though =/ ... As far as issues go, all I can say is this: Neither of us are being actively hunted down, beaten, and/or killed (to my knowledge). So, I think we have nothing to complain about as of yet.
@JMPERager
@JMPERager 10 лет назад
TrueChaoSclx My bad for not understanding you were pointing out the "ignorant" and closed-minded" to people in general, sorry. When it comes to the media, they've been quite professional form what I've noticed. No pre-judging us or anything, the media is quite calm. It's when it comes to haters and stuff mostly. But one thing is quite serious, there are parents, mostly in the US I believe, that dislike their children and presume they're gay because they watch MLP FIM. Seriously, PARENTS starting to dislike their own kids for it, it's not that usual but there a quite a few cases, quite disgusting to be honest.

Curt Pehrson I am very glad you made this documentary. It truly grasps and explains our fandom, and shows the fact that, despite the very small minority that does like furry porn, the rest of us don't really like it. We even take offense sometimes when other furries talk about it, and we will take offense if a porn-loving furry asks us to 'yiff', a furry term for sex. We don't like how the media has shown us as sex fanatics, and it has caused lots of trouble. I have a cousin in the Navy that told me some U.S. military people created what they call 'Furry Hunting'. They go out and find furries to beat up, for literally no reason. This is the media's fault, for showing us how they did. For that matter, if I am not wrong, a furry could be easily killed if attacked while wearing a fursuit, as some of the parts of the fursuit are sometimes metal, and can easily cut and stab skin. If a furry is even hugging to hard, by a little child, while wearing a fursuit it could be dangerous. This is a very nice set of videos, and I am glad you made them.

Ummm, I have absolutely no way or place to say this... so here's better than any other place. *fingers hover over keyboard waiting for brain* I, well, hmm, I think, well, I am, should be, want to be? I guess I am a furry. Sorta. I dunno, like, I guess I think I am? Kinda? Yeah, not really sure 'bout that part, but I had this idea for a furry character named Hibrid. that in some aspects symbolizes me, but I don't really do art, but I'd kinda like a visual representation. But here's what he looks like, in case someone wants to draw it (doubt it): It's a colorblind, all-black fox with glow-in-the-dark colored eyes. The fur on his head and tail look like a black fire, kinda like Hades's mohawk from Hercules (Disney), except the same color as his fur. He has 2 katanas, one black and one the color of his eyes. The sheathes for the katana are the same colors of the swords and are aligned parallel, rather than diagonal, on his back. He also has a scar on the back of his neck. A bit of legend behind him: He was both a short-tempered and smart individual. His short-tempered side didn't usually show unless he was provoked, and his smart side was the opposite, always on and getting him in trouble. After he was involved in a near-fatal car accident, he was stricken with PTSD and would have an episode with sounds of metal twisting, glass breaking and tires slowly deflating every so often, thinking the other driver was out to kill him. He was human at this time, and had never even thought of animals as living beings. The car he collided with had an orange body with white doors. His mind saw it as a fox after the crash, but he wouldn't tell anyone, his therapist or his family. His mind was mislead by stress. He went into the woods in the dead of night and killed a fox, thinking it would remove the disorder in his life. He then thew the body in a fire and beat it, letting his temper get the best of him. The fox, strangely, wouldn't die. He heard whispers coming from behind him, but brushed it off thinking he was having an episode. He had a seizure near the fire and fell in. When he became aware again, he was in an all black room. A voice taunted him, telling him he was a sick, sick man and that his soul was tainted. Still disoriented, he looked down to see what he was doing, only to notice he had paws. He screamed at the voice, asking what happened to him. The voice explained that he had been forced to take on the persona of his spirit animal, a jet-black, colorblind fox with the only remains of him sealed in his mind by the scar on his neck, waiting to be freed. The fox is colorblind so he wouldn't see the color orange and immediately attack or kill whatever it was. The curse, however, did not render him fully colorblind. He could see two different colors that reflect his personality, White and Black. The White symbolizes his smart side. If he sees white, it leads to a smart, honest decision. Black, on the other hand, represents his short temper. He begins to pump with adrenaline and the Black fire on his head and tail become the color of his eyes, and he draws his sword. People with Black or White fur still appear Black or White, so he can sometimes mislead himself. Once he sees Black it isn't so easy to cool him down, as he can't think when he sees Black, he can only fight. I'm so sorry for rambling on, But I don't have any idea where else to say this! It took me roughly an two and a half hours to type this up and make a backstory. It was worth it, I just had to get it out, that's all! If you are reading this, please respond and, I dunno, say something!

I've met quite a lot of furries during my time on the internet, going back about eight years up until now. While yeah, the stereotype that all furries are sex-obsessed weirdos isn't entirely true, to say that it's a complete myth is also fairly disingenuous, porn and fetishes are still really prominent in this subculture. Almost all of the furries I've known were at best really awkward nerds who would occasionally let slip that they were into freaky shit and at worst people who were preoccupied with their bizarre fetishes to the point where it was almost all they ever talked about. In addition, I've noticed that furries and various other subcultures that get closely associated with them seem really prone to outbursts of emotional drama, to the point where it sometimes reaches vendetta levels that result in nothing but tears and turmoil for everybody that bears witness to it. Sadly, I can't say I ever met someone who was a self-proclaimed furry who wasn't at least a little odd. With that said, I'm not saying that furries are inherently bad people, on the contrary some of those furries have been some of the closest and most interesting friends I've made online. It's also true what the narrator said at the start of the first video and what the Doc said in this one, many of the furries I've known are extremely creative and imaginative, sometimes to the point where it can make you a little envious. Some of the stuff you see furries make can make your jaw drop for the RIGHT reasons even moreso than the more infamous wrong ones. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, and always at least a little weird, but never boring. That's my take on what furries are like.

this is definitely a very smooth, "finished" sort of documentary. it wasnt immature or ignorant in any way (unlike countless others i have seen) and it appeals to the viewer because of the depth of information, and not just stock footage of furres being silly. i really like that you went to head figures in the community unlike reporters, who must be scared to ask them out of fear theyll be shut down on their fetish assumptions. i wish to show this to my family so that they too will understand :)

I've been getting into the fandom more, but early on I had a lot of reservations about getting too into it because of the immediate perception that people have when someone even says the word "furry" I'm hopeful that in the near future more people will start to become more open to what the majority of the fandom is instead of just paying attention to the minority. Even though I've been in the fandom for a while now and discovered so many things already, I really enjoyed watching it. Kudos to you!

@Curt Pehrson Very much enjoyed this documentary. Rarely do I sit down and watch stuff on RU-vid (much less for 30+ mins). Looked very professionally done and if you had had a British accent and someone told me this was going to air on the BBC... I would have believed them. I watch a lot of documentaries, so keep in mind that comment is not coming from nowhere. Loved the use of Depth of Field. Thanks for all the hard work in making and editing this so people like me could see it.

Wow... I have to say this is the most comprehensive look at the furry community yet. Thank you for giving furries like me a way to explain the fandom. For me the community is accepting and open, something that I have never seen before discovering furries.

This documentary is amazing! Thank you for making this! I can tell this has changed the minds of many. To be honest, lots of kids are becoming furries to! That's great! Making new friends and communicating! It is very sad though as well that people who dislike furries are hurtful in the most devastating ways...even to the younger furries get treated in multiple rude ways. As a furry myself I get hated all the time. Like I'm literally 14! The fandom is so outstanding! It accepts people for what the like to do! People expressing themselves in unique ways! This video almost made me cry. This was just outstanding. 😄😭

@DarkPaladinX77
@DarkPaladinX77 9 лет назад
LEGANDof EMILY I'd say like 65% to 75% of the population is pretty much men. The interviewer probably just didn't grab one to talk to. Usually the women are SUPER into like the guys, the guys typically know more about it overall.
@zazzycat3439
@zazzycat3439 9 лет назад
It depends on the person , not the gender but I do agree on a population stand point. However it would have been nice to see some variation. No problem though! :)

LEGANDof EMILY I meant to say "usually the women AREN'T SUPER into it like the guys". My keyword was "usually" however. There are definitely some women in the community who know their stuff.

In general, I liked it. I would have liked more footage of con activities so people could see what kind of innocent fun we're all having with their own eyes. People hugging, a cuddly furpile, generally bouncy, happy people. Also i agree with an above comment that a woman interviewee would have been cool. Lastly, more in-depth description of how people embrace the fandom (like through making costumes, drawing, writing stories, role playing, etc) I'd give it a 7/10. Good job!

I find myself watching this documentary at least once every month. Each time I watch it, I have come back with an even greater understanding of both the fandom, and each of its problems and fine points to admire. I study hard into the fandom, and have done so for as long as I can remember--I study it just as much as I practice it. What I have learned ultimately, is that the best influences for our name, are putting a smile on your face and doing what makes you happy while here with fellow furs.

I'm a surviving/thriving First Waver (1951) who eventually realised that he is an essential two-spirit shaman, Jungian transactional dialogic therapist, & a fine art/cyber-art therapist. These Wondrous Strange Human Beings are so very much a vital part of the Reawakening Cycle now gathering inevitably natural & healthy momentum. Oscar Wilde said, "Give a man a mask, & he'll tell you the truth". And Marlene Dietrich commented about Americans' obsession with sex, which is merely a fact of Life.

@Xelig00n The song featured in the closing credits is called "Lost" by Jakob "Granite Tail" Riis. Specifically, the version without vocals. It used to be downloadable on his Fur Affinity account, but last I checked it was removed. You will have to contact him to ask for a copy. I do not have license to distribute the track beyond its use in my documentary. ~ Curt

This was fascinating. Being a furry is really no different than an RPG. I am not a furry, but the costumes that they create is extraordinary. If you look at warriors, they base their tribe on animals. Native Americans especially would call on spirits of animals in ceremonies and have animal names in the tribe. These people are pretty much doing the same thing.

As an anime fan, I can see a lot of parallels in the fan cultures, especially cosplayers of course. Wearing another persona, social networking, being branded as a fetish (like Kage does here...) This kind of gives some perspective on how outsiders might see anime, or any niche fan cultures.

Having a Fursona isn't the only thing that makes a Furry. There are Furries out there who do not even have one. You can be a fursuiter, you can be just an artist, a fursuit maker, an anthro enthusiast. Can be one thing or all at the same time. There is no one definite definition for a Furry. Humans with animal characteristics are still furry in a way. But there is a certain line crossed from being a cat-eared girl(called a NekoMimi) and an anthropomorphic being. I hope that kind of helped.
