Further Christmas Wrapping: 100 Years of Radio Times

It's even more of a Christmas tradition than the frosty reception: the Christmas and (usually) New Year double issue of the Radio Times. The premier listings magazine has now run almost every single week for a full hundred years - including Christmas weeks. And from the very start, those have come enclosed in a special cover that, over the years, has run the gamut from classy to classless, from detailed pre-Raphaelite oil-on-canvas depictions of Santa to staged photos of gormless comedy characters. All that and more can be seen here, in an absolutely exhaustive look back at a full century of the Bradshaw of Broadcasting at Christmastime.

Victor Lewis-Smith lives on in your well-researched, details, occasionally acerbic and wonderfully observed humour. Bravo and Happy Generic Holidays! 🙂

There's more than a touch of Victor Lewis-Smith in Matthew's videos, the DNA of Ads Infinitum is embedded in The Hard Sell. I had a correspondence with the late great man himself, he told me stories about TV producers like Bryan Izzard while I sent him recipes for food I'd had in America and Canada. I still miss him, but his influence lives on in the work of people like our Matthew. ❤

@14:38 When did that figure get quietly dropped from Robinson's Marmalade? I only really remember the big backlash towards the initial idea of dropping it in the late 80s/early 90s, when it was kept on, but obviously it has long gone from the packaging now.

26:36 Would it help if I mention that in some Welsh Bibles, the wise men are referred to as "Star Wizards", presumably meaning that they were astronomers.

1976 I think is meant to be Good King Wenceslas and his page carrying pine logs, flesh and wine to a peasant as in the carol.

A lovely documentary, but you did seem to keep quoting prices in Shillings when the covers were clearly priced in pence.

May the Radio Times continue to be published way beyond the not-too-distant future. Like its original owner, the BBC, may it continue to embrace the arts and provide a welcome piece of normality in this increasingly convoluted and confusing world. And like its original benefactors, may it also continue to piss off the Tories and the Daily Mail, because they deserve to be permanently pissed off.

If this world is confused, organisations like the BBC have caused it.

This an excellent article, but the narration is a bit gabbled in places!

Thanks for this. A really interesting look at Christmas Radio Times throughout the years. I know I'm being a pain (sorry), but you keep saying shillings instead of pence! 3d etc means three pence. Three shillings would have been written as 3/- or sometimes 3s
@MrGluben
@MrGluben 10 месяцев назад
Sorry, you can blame the co-writer (me) for that. Some other mistakes: the artist who died in 1911 was Edwin Austin Abbey, not Edwin Justin Abbey; the 1954 cover was by Cyril Walter Hodges, not Cecil Walter Bacon; and it’s not Lulu on the 1970 cover, it’s Cilla Black. As Monty Python and Stuart Kenny might say, those responsible have been sacked.

@MrGluben. Sacking seems a bit harsh, especially at Christmas! Lol. We all make mistakes and these things happen. The video is still very interesting and I learnt a great deal so thank you and have a very Merry Christmas.

If I'd had more time to go through the script I probably would have caught the shillings thing at least, so blame my ear

@applemask. Don't worry, it's al good. I hope your is improving and all went well. With that in mind, it's great that you were able to get the video out in time. It's much appreciated.

Hi Matthew, I realise you are in the midst of post-op recovery but would like to point out that the price on the cover is in old pence, not shillings. All the best, Geoff.
@MrGluben

Not his fault, it’s mine as co-writer, as explained in a previous reply.

Get a life! The price of Radio Times was four pence in 1959, not four shillings! One penny was 1/12 of one shilling, remember twelve pence = one shilling, twenty shillings = one pound.
@MrGluben

As already explained in the other comment replies, this was an error on my part as co-writer, for which I’ve already apologised.
