The second chapter of Further Ramblings of Railwaymen' features a couple of Alex 'Mac' McClymont's stories but mainly 'Mac' superb photographs that he took in the early 1960s.
I first met Mac when I was a young 16 year-old fireman and he made a big impression on me.
Once Mac passed for driving duties, it was a pleasure to be booked as his fireman.
Mac is extremely knowledgeable about railways - and surprisingly for an SR engineman, his favourite loco class is the Gresley A4 Pacific locomotive..........

Dear ole Mac, he and Bill Brain were my favourite drivers at Woking. It was always good fun working with those two. To be fair all the drivers I worked with were good men; some were more talkative than others, but all were sincere and good to me. I truly miss those days. If only I had a Time Machine.🙄 What a fantastic collection of photographs and memories. Thank you for yet another wonderful video. Happy New Year!

I wish I was in a position to have spoken these words but I was too young for a career on the Stan powered railway

Thank-you for sharing part of your life with us; absolutely fascinating, funny, sad and enthralling. Every generation mourns the loss of a way of life, but I believe yours can claim that more accurately than most. We're told it's wrong to look back too often, but it always seems a far better place than the present.

If people spent a bit less time looking back and a bit more time looking after the future we'd be in a much better state as a nation. One thing we did get right was scrapping fossil fuel burning external combustion engines in favour of cleaner and more efficient technology. This averted major air pollution crisis and also helped in the drive to develop traction which could overcome the climate change problem.

What an incredible insight into the life of a railwaymen and his colleges. The quality of the photos is superb with some very unusual shots. I hope to view more of this type of railway video.

I remember seeing the M7 on push pull from Swanage to Wool in the 60s.

Well done! There seems to be little doubt that there was plenty of enthusiasts working for BR in that final decade of steam.

Thanks for your video. Good old days sadly I suppose coal wouldn't last forever. I remember Bill Hoole he was a top link driver at King's Cross. I thank you for your story I enjoy these videos. Bryan Palmer

Wonderful pictures and commentary. Hard to escape the conclusion that I was born too late for steam. The skill, responsibility and enthusiasm of theses men is humbling. BTW It’s ‘Sir John’s Bridge’ not ‘St. John’s Bridge’.

Thanks for your kind comments Stephen but I think I'm right in describing St John's Bridge correctly.

@@geoffburch7959 It’s always great to hear directly from railwaymen about their experiences in the age of steam. Fortunately I have several memories but only either from outside the fence or as a child passenger (NOT ‘customer’…!). The responsibility placed on the shoulders of footplate crew was immense as was the skill demanded. The bridge I’m thinking of was named (or so I am told!) after a bailiff. But I’m happy to be corrected 🙏

Hi Stephen, That's an interesting theory and I'll speak to my good friend local Historian David Rose (who also writes articles for the Woking News and Mail every week called 'Peeps into the Past') and I'm sure he will find out. I'm doing a 'Ramblings of a Railwayman' illustrated talk/presentation for the RCTS (Surrey Branch) at the United Reformed Church, White Rose Lane, Woking on Thursday 20th April at 7pm - why don't you come along, it would be nice to meet you. Kindest regards Geoff

Another enjoyable 'rambling'! Note that at 21:44 there is a DMMU on the down local line at Woking awaiting departure for Basingstoke - somewhat unusual but I recollect that they worked local services to Basingstoke just prior to electrification.

Well spotted! Yes, some of the Top Link drivers at Guildford learnt the DMMU as they had a turn from Woking - Basingstoke & return in the link.
