Shia Laboeuf saying "on the way" before each shot is something gunners need to do because when they fire the mechanism for the gun recoils back and if the loader is there for any reason the call is to tell them to get out of the way.

That long gaze you were talking about with Shia Lebouf is generally known as the 1,000yard stare, a term mainly originating from WWI with trench warfare, but heavily popularized from WWII and later on with Vietnam. Shia absolutely mastered that stare in this movie.

Much of the German equipment was superior but was much more complicated and time consuming to build. Mass production was the key to winning the war and Sherman tanks could be produced quickly in large numbers. The Sherman could often be repaired in the field with parts from wrecked tanks. Quantity eventually overcame quality. Hitler was obsessed with size and superiority, the master race had to have bigger and better. Something simple and basic could be produced much more quickly and in large numbers but he wanted the best.

Would recommend "Das Boot" (1981). About a German Submarine and the Crew and how they deal with boredom, fear and claustrophobia. One of the few movies from Germanys perspective. And at the end you see that all of them deal with the same.

The sequence (from 16:22) with Brad Pitt and Logan Lerman and the two sisters in their apartment, where they just try to act normally and peacefully until the rest of the team shows up always makes me so sad, cause you can kind of tell even Brad Pitt's character just wanted a moment of quiet normalcy before the mood got ruined.

“Ideals are peaceful, history is violent” is one of my favorite quotes ever. Especially today when people think they have all the answers for a perfect society Oh and the Tiger scene is basically completely inaccurate. The Tiger wouldn’t have moved from concealment and Fury’s 76mm gun could’ve penetrated the front of the Tiger from about 750m. If Bible was a better shot he could’ve saved the other tanks

@@TTTT-oc4eb Source? Because the 76mm could penetrate about 120mm of armor at 90deg while the Tiger’s hull was around 100mm thick. The 75mm gun definitely had issues with thicker armor but the 76mm had no problems, especially with M93 HVAP
@TTTT-oc4eb
@TTTT-oc4eb День назад
@@crispy_338 The problems with the US 76mm and 90mm standard AP rounds are well known, just google it. The US tests against US armor plates (which were relatively soft) were flawed (done without HE filler), and in RL the gun performed much worse against the harder German armor plates. The rounds were too soft, and in addition the HE filler had a tendency to burst on impact, causing the round to shatter. The APCR rounds were very rare, even late in the war.

My dad was in a tank unit in the late 1970s-80s. He said this film was one of the best representations he's seen of the dynamic of a tank crew that. Non-military folk think they hate each other or are being mean to each other, but they're actually close like brothers. From the opening scene, you thought they were losing it. In contrast, he said, "This crew is really close. Must've served a while together." Then after it was revealed they were together since North Africa (US involvement 1942-43), he just nodded and went, "There we go." The dialogue and attitude between them throughout the movie reminded him of his old boys.

That vehicle you asked about at the 23:58 mark in your reaction ("Is that a Tiger"), is a German Sd.Kfz. 251 Half-Track. Not necessarily a tank, though it is tank-like. It's called a half-track, because the back section rolls on tracks, like a tank. The front section has normal wheels, like an automobile. It is normally used to transport troops, but sometimes they have guns mounted. The tracks in the back provide better traction in mud and ice, than a vehicle that has all wheels.
@thomasfranz6467
@thomasfranz6467 День назад
The German Sonderkraftfahrzeuge (Sd.Kfz. literally "special motor vehicle") had tons of different variants and so on. They're not tank-like really, they're basically just armoured cars. The armour is so thin, that usually a machine gun could penetrate it. Just enough, so that enemy infantry might have a hard time against them, but certainly in no position to withstand a bigger gun, and certainly no tank round, except if they got a lucky ricochet maybe. In the later stages of the war, they would often be used as troop transports for mechanized divisions, equipped with machine guns as defence. Some, however, also had big anti-tank guns mounted, but you could also find them with AA-guns, or just as mobile artillery, with either mortars or guns.

My grandfather was a gunner like Shia's character portrayed. His tank was disabled twice and they had to crawl out through that bottom hatch. On one occasion, the tank commander's brains landed in his lap. He was eventually wounded by a mortar round while he was in a church that had been converted into a post office. He had a scar that ran between his eyes and down across his cheek from the shrapnel, and it gave him permanent paralysis on one side. I was in training when he died and was so heartbroken because I had grown up enough and learned about all kinds of things to ask him. So this movie, as unrealistic as it is at times, still showed a lot for me to imagine about what my grandfather went through.

The film’s Tiger tank was borrowed from the Tank Museum in England. It’s the only operational tank of its type left in the world. The film producers returned it in a semi broken and worn out state, that the museum owners were truly furious about. Other very good war films to consider; All Quiet on the Western Front (1979 version), Battle of Britain, A Bridge Over the River Kwai, Downfall, Hamburger Hill, A Bridge too Far, Zulu. Finally, two great films set during WW2 and both very much classics, Waterloo Bridge and Casablanca. If you want to try black and white films.

@@jamesskyway6746 Would not even need to be a smart tank commander...just a competent one. That is the prevailing theory that at this late stage of the war, tank crews were not trained well at all, and the "commander" was probably some infantry or gunnery officer that got handed a new off the assembly line Tiger. It was by itself with no others and didn't have any infantry attached as it should have. Of course, the points others here have said are all also valid, that the 76 could have penned the Tiger even from the front. But, movie, so it's cool.
@iKvetch558
@iKvetch558 День назад
@@charleshartley9597 I have seen that theory before...and it is possible. But there is a major flaw to the idea that it was an inexperienced/untrained crew in the Tiger, and thus they did not know...at least the driver and gunner would have had to have some significant training, or they would not know how to operate the tank. Sure, the loader and the bow gunner and the commander could have no clue about tanks, but you can't just jump in a Tiger and drive it or operate the gun without some training or experience, as far as I know. But it is possible there was a barely trained driver and gunner, that knew the basic operations of the tank, but not enough to engage the American tank in the lead and with the longest gun...it is just less plausible than folks usually realize. 👍

"On the way" is announced by the Gunner when firing the main gun. You use it to alert the crew and fire on the "Y" of "Way" I was an Abrams Commander and I called my tank "Grim Reaper". I love the crew interaction in this, but the tactics make me cringe pretty much the whole way through. The Sherman crew consisted of the Tank Commander, Gunner, Loader, Driver and Assistant Driver / Bow Gunner.

Great reaction like always, this movie is epic love it, there are some fun-facts about it. Brad Pitts “war daddy” Character is based on a real person. His name was Lafayette G Pool. He is known as America’s Tank ace of world war 2. He managed to destroy 12 tanks, and over 250+ Armored vehicles in under 90 days on the western front. He was awarded with multiple awards like the Silver Star, France’s legion of honour, Distinguished Service Cross (2nd highest award under the Medal of Honor). He is buried in the Sam Houston National Cemetery. The Tiger tank battle near the end of the movie was played by Tiger 131, captured nearly intact in WW2 and the only remaining operational Tiger 1 in the world. 131 lives at a tank museum in Britain, and rolls out in displays once in a blue moon. It only got hit in the gun mantle so wasn’t that damaged was just jammed hence they abandoned the tiger but normally they use death charges with a pin with a timer so this doesn’t happen they was even a tiger manual with instructions on this. Side note: The reason the tank battle looked like two morons were driving was because they were given specific instructions in which they were only allowed to move the tiger forward and backwards. They couldn't turn or move at an angle due to the old nature of the tank and potential damages. Keep up the good work.

Sorry for the few corrections Shells, not missiles. No they dont have tracers every round, tracers were used in HMG's, Heavy machineguns, and were only every 4-5 round. EDIT: Why react to this if.. everything is blurred beyond recognition? lol

Talking about how amazing the acting in this movie is, for as uncomfortable / stressed / frustrated the entire LONG scene in Emma and her cousin's home made me, I absolutely loved all of it. Just because of how well acted and directed it was, to make me feel all of the things I did Also, the 4v1 tank battle against the Tiger has got to be one of my favorite scenes in this film! It was so intense that after it was over I realized that I was barely breathing during any of it lol. The music, the directing, and especially the acting with all of the comms between the tanks and the crew of the Fury itself. ON THE WAY I can't help but draw those parallels you did immediately between Norman and Upham from SPR.... While Upham largely maintained his innocence and conscience (at the expense of those around him), Norman lost himself to become the aptly named "machine". Makes for some very interesting compare and contrast analysis between the two of them Thank you for the amazing reaction! As usual, the depth of your character analysis helped me to see some things with a fresh perspective that I didn't originally consider when I recently watched this movie for the first time. Very excited to check out the full watch along on Patreon later!

Agreed! That entire dining room scene was so emotional and well-acted. I'm not sure how Shia Lebouf didn't get an award for this film because WOW. Those eyes. He honestly didn't even look like himself. I actually really loved the character development for Norman. Not because I enjoyed seeing him break, but seeing what the cost of war does to a kid. I couldn't help but want to cry but cheer when he finally broke and was shooting the gun. The emotion seen through his eyes was SO intense and his catch phrase (which I can't type here lol) brought so many emotions. Glad you enjoyed this one!!

Yes, The tanks did have nicknames. The names usually began with the letter of the company they were in. (ie Alice for A company. Bobby for B company) Fury would have been in F company

The thing about this movie is that it’s not great for historical accuracy. The German tanks were not much superior to the Allied tanks. The Tigers and Panthers had a more powerful gun, but the Shermans have better maneuverability and reliability. However, when it comes to the atmosphere of what it was like to be in a tank crew, Fury gets it right. And I think that is the point of the movie. It’s not a documentary. It’s a drama that does a good job portraying the life and personalities of a tank crew.
@TTTT-oc4eb

The Tiger and Panther had much better off-road mobility than the Sherman. And by 1944 were probably as reliable as well.

I’m a Soldier of NZ 🇳🇿 myself, and I’ve spent a lot of time around tanks. (NZDF Infantry & logistics) A great number of men from our army have coincided with the US 🇺🇸 and UK 🇬🇧 military in their operations for Ukraine 🇺🇦. I remember going there on mission as an assistant in Odessa. And the nation is very much like what one sees on social media sites and television. So basically our mission was to deliver goods to the war funding for the Ukrainian army, it went on for three months.

It's a good movie, that scene where they pancake the corpse reminded me about a crazy video by K2 Battalion of Ukraines 54th Mechanized Brigade where one of their tanks run over some living russian soldiers in a trench, they did dig out one or two survivors afterwards and took them as prisoners of war, mad as hell how well documented war is now, 4k, multiple angles(since there is tons of gopros and drones around)? No problem. More or less every unit seem to upload their own content, on their own channels. War is hell.

The German guns in the woods and in the basement of the town weren't tanks. They were a PAK40 anti-tank cannon. I believe it was a 75mm gun which was the same gun of a late model Panzer 4 german tank though

Band of Brothers is a superb series. If you'd like to watch more war genre, for the Vietnam era "Platoon" starring Charlie Sheen is extraordinarily well done. Even closer to modern day, "Black Hawk Down" is excellent. While not really war genre there are some great submarine movies such as "The Hunt For Red October" and "Crimson Tide". And a couple of Tom Clancy story movies, "Clear And Present Danger" and "Patriot Games".
