Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan and one shrine in particular is buzzing with more foreign tourists than anywhere else, Fushimi Inari Grand Shrine! It's known as the shrine with 1,000 gates (called torii) but there are actually over 10,000 spread over a 4km path up a mountain. We learn about the history from the shrine's priest and find a way to enjoy it without the crowds. Come by rental cycle and climb the mountain at night! #kyoto #japan #100tokyo #onlyinjapan #kyotoshrine #cooljapan #外国人観光者 #fushimiinari #伏見稲荷大社 #torii #zen #hiking #cycling More info at facebook.com/onlyinjapantv -John
Your vids are great. It shows that you've lived in Japan for a while. I'm american and I can honestly say that more than half of us are douches, but your innocence (in a good way) makes this program feel like its for children . its refreshing to see something thats not vulgar for a change.
You're absolutely right there. Some of these video's are just so cheesy, although that doesn't mean they're not great, they're straight to the point, detailed and overall just fun to watch since the host presents himself in such a friendly way
We want to thank you for all the videos that you put online. You helped us a lot to make our Japan trip a memorable one; we went see this shrine at night, ate those okonomiaky in Hiroshima and went to the gatchapong shop at Haquiabara, such a wonderful experience! We spent some time at takeshita street and enjoy the vending machines :-) Thank you so much for sharing your experiences with us, you made our trip more fun and enjoyable. Continued posting new materials to keep our memories alive. Hope to meet you someday in Japan!
Véronique Bourbeau That makes me so happy to hear!! You really had quite a trip and seem to have seen a lot! Did you find anything I should film? Something unique? Maybe I'll go someplace you visited! Again, so glad you took the time to write and tell me about your trip. Keep in touch! -John
Japan is the best country I've visited in my life. I went to Kyoto and Osaka with my family in March 2018. All those temples and shrines in Kyoto are such beautiful sights. I really hope to go back to Japan some day.
I've just returned from my trip to Japan and I must say my visit to the Inari jinja is one my most memorable moments in Kyoto. Me and my little nephew tried to climb up the the mountain without realizing how far it would go. We've reached the 3rd to the last station before deciding to head back down because of lack of time.(his mom is waiting down below) It's quite tiring but it was very fun. I plan on climbing it all the way next year. I enjoyed your stint at NHK Tokyo eye. Glad that you're in RU-vid. Keep up great work.
inisipisTV Thanks, I enjoyed doing the TOKYO EYE program. When the producers change (every 3 years or so) so do many of the people reporters. Glad you remember it :D It really was a hike!! At night, it's easy because it's not crowded. I think I walked a little faster too because it was really creepy. Met nice people from Spain, Sweden, the US and UK. Loads of couples on dates! I bet your little nephew went down those steps really fast! I got back to the station from the top in less than 30 minutes I think. Kept thinking there were creatures outside the tunnel!! Thanks for watching and the nice comment! -John
If it helps a lot of people in Japan speak English as well so you could get food in Japan and still speak English the entire time!Hope this helps even if I am four years late🙃😁
There was this cute black cat that was so friendly. I went there at night and she (not sure about the gender) welcomes me and climbs at me at the fifth stop. Then i went the next day early morning and there she was again, warmly meowing to me and asking for a rub. I have pictures hehe.
not to push you or anything but please make more videos :D I love watching theses videos unfortunately it comes out once a month :'( anyway to make 2 videos a month? i know this isnt your full time job but its soo great to see soo many things of japan! im coming to Japan in January and all these videos help!! cant wait to experience everything that youve done!
I'd love to! I've a budget to produce only 1 show per month but perhaps I can propose more for 2015. I really REALLY enjoy doing this and would like to get more points of views from other people, better equipment, a consistent cameraman (I used a tripod for this) and really take this show to another level so EVERYONE can enjoy it even more. The more popular the show becomes, the more access to amazing location I can get. When I saw the show is primarily on RU-vid, most locations won't give me access but that's changing with more media exposure for this show inside Japan. I've ha d a lot of luck building the show the last year to set up for a deeper program in 2015 and beyond. So happy to hear you'll make the trip to Japan in January! Def let me know how you're trip went. Drop me a message via the facebook.com/onlyinjapantv page. -John
I was there last month. It was my last stop for a Kyoto day trip out of Osaka. I too went at night because it's 24 hours while Kinkakuji closes at 5. I met some cats and read the sign warning me about wild boar. I heard a rustling in some bushes and walked fast away from it. I missed a stair and fell down scraping my knees and getting my skirt all bloody. What an adventure. I got bandaids and a hot dog from the train station at the entrance. 😅
I love your videos!! I am so glad to come across your channel by accident! You are my favourate TokyoEye reporter and the most enjoyable TokyoEye episode for me is watching you eating Ramen :) Your new channel is great! I clicked the subscribe button without realising it! Please keep up the great work!
Wow! TOKYO EYE! I love that show. I've been focusing on this program the last year so not doing much TV for NHK World. YES, that ramen episode was so much fun. I did two of them, one with another RU-vidrs from the past, Kevin Cooney. Thanks for subscribing and watching @CK Cotas! -John
DId the full hike with my husband last week, this is one of those core memories, I touched one of the tori gates and with all my heart expressed how lucky I was to be able to be there, such a magical and spiritual place to be.
1st comment yay!! There are a lot of videos and guides out there that present how one should behave in certain situations in japan but I'd really like to see one done by you John.
Thanks so much John!!! Seriously without your videos I would´ve miss so much like the amazing Fushimi Inari Shrine. My visit to Tokyo and Kyoto were amazing (I even rented a bike) thanks to your videos!!! :D I hope next year (Yes Im coming back) can thank you in person!!! Best regards!!! Ivan
I'd love to do 2 a month like I did in 2013! It's a lot of work to request locations and apply for permission etc. I've been writing and editing videos for many years so that part doesn't take too long. Takes time and money but I'd love to do 2 a month plus a more casual onsite video to answer viewer questions. It's good to do this on location and provide more info / more background about the original report. I'll know if we can do this by March 2015 :) Fingers crossed! Awesome!! Thank you so much for always watching and supporting Cory Agra Really appreciate it! -John
I liked the part of him in the Wasabi garden. Seemed comforting when near the water and peeling apart the plant. :) Or maybe it's just my disgust of manipulated water here in the US, and I always feel better when I see *fresh* spring water, with all the natural minerals in it, much better for health. ;)
This channel is freaking epic...I don't plan on going to Japan anytime soon but I'll do waste my free time watching your videos...greetings from Malaysia, John! WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN
Thank you Nooriman Haqeem Nice to hear from you! Malaysia is such a fantastic place! I've wasted a lot of free time enjoying KL and the beaches ;) can't wait to go back on vacation again. -John
"The Doorway Effect" is the phenomenon that causes your brain to erase what is on your mind when you pass through a portal. It's why you forget why you walked into a room. Passing through the portal resets your thought process. Passing through so many gates would surely cleanse your mind of all your troubles! It is perhaps why people find this temple so relaxing?
Thank you so much, Emily Garner Next video coming up soon. I went to a Japanese onsen in the middle of a snow storm! Hope you enjoy it. Appreciate the feedback. -John
I love your videos! I have never been to Japan, but it's a country that i think seems amazing. So thanks to your videos i get a chanse to experience some of it. Keep the exellent videos coming!
I totally love the concept for biking in Kyoto (we are mountain bikers), this information is very helpful, thank you!!! Also love the music you chose, kind of adventurous, scary and funny at the same time :-D
Hi John! Love the show. Found your show a couple days ago and started to watch every episode! I come to love Japan even more after watching your videos. I'd love to see maybe a compilation video of your favorite moments. That would be really fun to watch!
Hi nassirk This is a great idea! Maybe this spring or summer I'll put together the top 10 moments from the series. There have been many!!! And a lot of bloopers too. haha -John
Adrian Matos there are over 32000 shrines called "Inari shrine" in Japan. If you are talking specifically about the Fushimi Inari grand shrine, you better use the official name.
I did the same like you before just last four months ago, I purposely fly to Kyoto to do so as I was inspired by your great video! And the experience is so eerie but it's so fund and I really like that! I will come here again this year autumn and witness another different seasonal view:)
Oh wow, that was awesome to watch! The bicycle tips, the shrine adventure (both day and night), the cats. Wow. Fantastic video! Edited: Forgot to ask, John, did you have a lock for your rental bike?
great video!! im going kyoto soon and will definitely do a slow night hike up fushimi inari.. dang the view wad beautiful.. curious why very little goes there.. but hey its good for us xD cant wait for my trip in 2 weeks time xP
Just went up there today and it was beautiful. My legs are killing me though. I went up, no stopping and i felt like a true god when i reached the top. A god with asthma that is, since i was so out of breath i nearly threw up. Still, i recommend it to everyone since its a very beautiful and memorable experience
Hello, thanks for the great video. Did you really climb all the way to the top and not just half way as shown in the video? Climbing up to the top and down the other side of the hill took about 4.5 hours for me last summer and while coming down the long route there are very few lights anywhere
Another great episode, John! I really want to go to fushimiinari and Kyoto! Keep it up and hope to see more and MORE and MORE! Will you do more than 1 episode a month? Pleeeease! #cooljapan #onlyinjapan
I looked for this video because you said in your *GO video, you made this video and somehow, this is not doing as well as the other travel videos. Then you said, the videos about shrines in general is not really doing well with youtube’s algorithm. AND you’re right, I have been watching your videos for quite some time but i haven’t seen this one. so now, I’m here enjoying your video. XD I have been to this shrine 6 years ago and we left at around 6pm. It was pretty dark at that point and was kind of hard to navigate. XD Wouldn’t want to run into floating flames. XD
so basically, you can buy one of those mini tori gates and donate it? Is there a specific spot where you can put them or do you hand it to someone in charge?
I've been here last November and I saw the banners along the entrance stated Fushimi Inari Taisha have been awarded 1st prize from TripAdvisor in the category "2014 Japanese Site Popular WIth Foreign Tourists". As I walk further into the shrine, I was wondering why there is so little people. I came here around 9am-10am, there's not many people around that hour but as I came down from the mountain, I was surprised because suddenly there are so many people especially at the start of the Senbon Torii (two dense rows of torii gates), and I was like ahh that makes sense now. It was around noon by the time I came down and saw there is a couple taking their wedding photo but they kinda look awkward because of the crowd. I felt so lucky that I came in the morning because I don't prefer sightseeing in a very crowded situation, it makes me rush through til the end haha. Its the same as John said "avoid the crowd, enjoy the hike" :D. But I can't find the Kodamaga-ike aka Echo Pond though, I thought it will be shown in this video but nevermind I somehow get to experience the night at Fushimi Inari by watching this video ;) (sorry for bad english XD)
If I was gonna go to Japan, I'd definitely want to visit the major shrines (I'm actually kinda into Shinto myself) So I'd definitely go here, to the Ise Jingu shrine, the Enoshima shrine, anywhere else that would be ideal?
We just went to Fushimi Inari! Totally worth it, especially stepping off the main paths you can find neat areas! We are in Japan for a month so we will be visiting/vlogging a bunch of places!
possible to cycle around Kyoto seems definitely fun and convenient. I'm planning to visit Japan soon. Could you mention if bicycle parking available near those main attractions and where are those?
Hello WAO! I think It would be fun if you made a video of Mt Fuji. I am very fascinated about mt Fuji as one of the most climbed mountains in the would.
I climbed up there once and was so exhausted after just a few steps that I had to take a few second of break all the time. haha..I want to be that one guy running up the stairs
This was so interesting! Thanks for the video, one question though, I noticed the bike they gave you did not have a lock, where did you park your bike? Is it safe to leave bikes around in tourist areas?
This is an excellent question! The lock was in my backpack. Bikes absolutely need to be locked. When you rent the bicycle from KTCP or other rental shops, there are a few guidelines / rules explained. Often it's written down and you have to sign it so you understand. KTCP has been operating for a really long time and has never had an accident yet! Thank you so much for the question Lavodnas -John
Is it possible to order something via the inarine shrine website or some other store from japan you know? I want a cutle little white foxie key chain :(
sadly I don't think so :( I tried looking around the internet for one out of curiosity after reading your comment. Because I bought one of those fox keychain plushies when I went about a year ago.
I been there too and stopped at the same place on the beginning of the show. It getting dark and i want to avoid going back late. I found out that most shop close around 8-9pm. So i went down early to look for dinner.
kimono38 I know! Everything seemed to close early in Kyoto compared to Tokyo. When I came back from the mountain at the end, the station was like a ghost town! It was a little scary to be honest ... hard to find a restaurant open so I had to eat convenient store food for dinner in the hotel -John
Thank you for this great Video! Where did you leave your bike once you reached Fushimi Inari Shrine? I read that there are few places for bicycle parking in Kyoto. This may have changed. If any one knows I'd be very grateful for any information. Thank you.
***** There's a place to park behind the police station in the front of the shrine. It's where the shrine has its main office. I didn't see too many places to park but if you lock it and place it to the side or in an out-of-the-way place, it is usually okay. I wouldn't leave it over night. You can also ask the bike rental shop for information of certain places, where to park. They are very helpful (because they don't want to lose their bicycles, of course :) In the downtown area of Kyoto, Gion for example, there are designated places to park, especially by the train stations where people commute. Thanks for the comment and question! -John
WAORYU ONLYinJAPAN Thank you John! My husband and I would like to rent bikes when we go to japan in September...so this information is very helpful! Can't wait for more of your videos!
