Metals like Mild Steel and Brass can be fused using Silver Solder to give a strong, high temperature bond. In this video I demonstrate how.

Sir. Thank you so much for this video. You're going to laugh but I am going to use this method with my existing tools and solder to -- get this -- fix my BBQ grill, instead of buying new parts for it. Thank you!!

Is the flux the same as for copper pipes soldering?
@Jeff.Lippman.Presents
@Jeff.Lippman.Presents 7 месяцев назад
That is a very good question, and a very important question because no, it is a different kind of flux. Precious metal soldiers require the use of either borax as flux, or alternatively as I'm using in the video something called Auflux, which is a purpose made liquid flux that you can put on with a small paintbrush used with precious metals. If you Google it, you'll find it not hard to track down, a number of vendors for selling it on eBay for example, and it isn't particularly expensive. Unless you're doing a hell of a lot of silver soldering all the time, it wouldn't surprise me if you found one fluid ounce to be a more or less lifetime supply.

Great video, which solder did you use?

I use what is called silver hard solder, which is a hallmark standard silver solder, normally used for bonding sterling silver, although as you can see, it's more versatile than that.

Thank you for this. Of course, in jewelry school they teach you never to solder any metal other than precious. I was always suspicious of that. Now I know we can silver solder mild steel. Thank you.

I think you'll find that what they're talking about in your course is using silver solders on base metal, costume jewellery. The reason that would be a problem is that generally, costume Jewellery is made from low melting point metals such as zinc or pewter, with a much lower melting point then silver soldiers. But if you're using it on a known metal, such as brass or mild steel, it works a treat, providing you're using the right type of high temperature flux.

I have a nice counter top water filter, with the only drawback being that it leaks 1/4 cup of water a day. I can't buy a tray with a raised lip that will perfectly fit it, but I can bend one, then join the corners. This looks like a perfect solution.

Just make sure that you drain the system of water before you start.

I had my eyeglasses repaired like this. I have the silver and the torch but the flux I will be using is powder for brazing.

If your brazing power is predominantly borax, I would imagine that would work. The main thing to remember is that precious metal solders are expected to work at temperatures north of seven hundred celsius at a minimum. I would be very interested to know how well your brazing power holds up.
