In this video we will talk about the overall design process. How much control is enough, and when to add more. We will also look at the different ways to add control and where it is needed.
We will be looking at the general shape of a car dash board for this exercise starting from scratch.

New subscriber! I found your videos almost by accident. I've been looking for a good tutorials on the Fusion form environment. Always came up with one-offs or some kind of useless "speed-sculpt" demo. I've learned a ton from you already. Very clean narration with both a Big Picture overview and crucial Fusion control tips given. I hope your channel catches on. (I think the RU-vid algorithm finally revealed your videos when I searched for "T-splines and Fusion 360," FWIW.)

Thanks Adam! This channel wasn't meant to be focused on Forms, but it was a need I was happy to fill. There is always more forms content and i still have another car series on my todo list. What sorts of things are you trying to model with forms? Maybe I can point you to a specific video to speed up your learning. Thanks for the sub!

@@LearnEverythingAboutDesign I’m still trying to figure out what exactly it is I want to do with all this. I build scale models and do some 3D printing to “enhance” some kits. The more I learn, the more I realize I need to learn. I’m not a designer or an engineer, just a tinkerer looking to build a skill set that may one day gel into a side gig or micro business. I see 3D printing as an interim step-like a proof-of-concept. I’m interested in creating forms that can be scaled-up to create molds (e.g., for concrete, carbon fiber parts, or resin-pouring). That’s a whole other area of study, though, that I haven’t yet figured out how to tackle-I know it can be a complicated process.

For sure. I have done wet layup and vacuum bagging work in the past. I have done it for car parts and motorcycle bodywork mainly. One of my longer term projects on this channel is to complete my car model, design some fenders and manufacture them off the CAD files. That was the original goal I had here was more of a design and make channel. But it is still growing and I don't have the time to dedicate to that project at the moment, but one day! Any questions don't hesitate to ask or email me support@caducator.com I worked in motorcycles and in automotive research before getting into training. I did most of my professional design work in Solidworks, Inventor and NX and have focused on Fusion 360 for the past several years to get back into the masses. Other CAD tools are just out of reach for most and that is where Fusion 360 really bridges the gaps! You don't go from a free license to $10000 to do something commercially. You go from Free to $360/year. Scalable :) The biggest hurdle for designing "kits" is really to get good quality data off the parts into CAD. Really takes an investment in high end scanning equipment or a lot of time and adjustment developing molds for parts. I have used scanners to reverse engineer surfaces on cars and motorcycles. The hobby stuff won't cut it and needs to be higher end for anything other than a 1 off. Keep that in mind. Places rent them for reasonable prices per week. To learn using photogrammetry or consumer grade scanners will work.

Glad to hear that! The shortcuts for Forms are a bit hidden. When you are in EditForm the shortcuts for all the selection methods are displayed but ones like Extrude aren't as far as I know.

Great insight into basic modeling strategies. I was not aware of such intricacies. This is a unique and much needed channel ! Thank you very much. I intend to use form for the needs of ship modeling. It requires both the organics shapes provided here and the the precision of parametric models. Ok, next one now.
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign 2 года назад
Even though it doesn't apply to ships the videos i did on the MR2 Fender Flare might be useful to see how to lay out details and features. There was an update I cover in video 20 something for the Match tool. You can associate it with a sketch and keep the relationship. When I have modeled ships in the past they have been with sketches and surfaces so I can't say I have tried yet. If you have a ship in mind feel free to email me a picture at support@caducator.com and I am happy to give it a shot.

Great video. Is there a way to ensure that the gauge pod is exactly symmetrical by giving some of the cage lines dimensions or anything? Or is that type of exactness touched on in later videos in the series?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign 2 месяца назад
you can enable symmetry on a freeform body but it applies to the entire body. If you need the pod area to be a certain shape you can use sketches, edges of surface/solids or even a scan mesh as a reference. The Pull tool will let you pull a form down to a mesh. The Match tool will let you pull a form edge to the edge of a reference surface.

Re-watching. Why would a simple, flat face like the one you started with display even *slightly* differently between Box and Smooth display?
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign
@LearnEverythingAboutDesign Год назад
Until you add/move/extrude anything it won't. As soon as you extrude an edge, there will be a difference for where that edge is in Smooth vs Box. Using the Utilities > Make Uniform will bring them back closer. So in the end the edge layout will be in different positions but the actual surface(if still truly flat) will be the same.

I've been following. But eight minutes into part 4, I got lost. Am using a macbook air. It doesn't allow me to select 2 edges at the same time. So I can't perform the modify function. Please help. Btw, I love your content. So educative

Interesting! Since I don't use a Mac I haven't run into this. Is that true if you hold down CMD while selecting? With forms there are a few ways to select but either CTRL/CMD or Shift are the goto option. I did a search and couldn't find anyone else who has posted this question so hopefully the Command button works. Let me know.

@@stairwaysbrand7708 on my Mac mini, Shift also works to allow selection of multiple edges. And I have to use control in order to get the view to change, Ctrl-3 smooth display, Ctrl-1 Box display, etc. What I couldn't figure out was how to do the Extrude + Bevel at 25:08 using a MAC.
