Futility, Or the Wreck of the Titan,
Morgan ROBERTSON (1861 - 1915)
This novel was published a full 14 years before the sinking of the Titanic, but listeners may be surprised at how many parallels this fictional tale has with subsequent true events.
The Titan is the largest and most technologically advanced steamship of her time. She is considered unsinkable. Her full speed crossings of the Northern Lane Route carry her rich passengers in the highest standards of luxury and comfort. The less well-off travel in rougher quarters but still benefit from the speed of travel. These crossings, however, are fraught with navigational hazards, the greatest of which is ice.
Unlike the ship, one member of her crew is not of the highest standard. At least, not anymore. John Rowland is a broken man who drinks to forget his past. However, when the Titan crashes into an iceberg during her attempt to break a speed record, he is forced to confront his past. Can he overcome his enemies and escape as the ship begins to sink? And can he make his way back to civilization and find self-respect once more? Adventure and soul-searching await Rowland, with a surprise ending.

@@cal_in_cal_out1207 more than that. But it is what sparked jpMorgan’s imagination. To aquire the white star line through mercantile marina co. And then owning the white star lines 3 ships… yes captain smith knew titanic was the Trojan horse to lure the American philanthropists like Astor, Guggenheim and Strauss.. there were many more. About 25 or so. But those three names most prominent on board. Astor owned 40% of every mortgage in America. At that time already expanding from east to west coast…. Yes. This ship was built and sunk to steal chance of their idea of a new American monetary policy. J.P. Morgan was loyalist to king of England. Along with rockefellers and so fourth. Y’all have no idea how bad of a man J.P. Morgan was. He took 6 railroad presidents at 24 years old aboard his yacht the concierge and forced them to sign a merger… he wouldn’t let them off the yacht until they signed the merger. 3 months later he consolidated all railroads… ultimately monopolizing all industry. Very interesting and somewhat unnerving as it foretold the sinking of the Titanic by an iceberg that happened sometime later! So many details are the same, it was also considered unsinkable, both sunk in the same month April, and were built of steel, and had prominent 1st class passenger onboard. The same number of inadequate lifeboats and lastly the similarities in their names Titan and Titanic. The only difference I’ve found is that it was Titans 3rd return New York to U.K. voyage and Titanics maiden voyage.

I think this was used as a blueprint for the designer(s) of the Titanic, Olympic and Britannic. I think that J Bruce Ismay thought he could build the Unsinkable ship(a) that this book talked about . The only difference is that Ismay thought his ship(s) wouldn’t Sink...... but by naming one of the ships Titan , they challenged the god(s).... which appears to be a very bad decision in hindsight ...

I never knew that Polar Bears could be found that far south, even back then. But I'm not much of a naturalist, maybe it makes complete sense. I just didn't expect a Bear fight to happen in the plot.
@ronaldvronca8999
@ronaldvronca8999 3 года назад
The bear if there was one, would have been on the ice when it broke off from an artic forld. Some of these icebergs are in fact floating islands and could flow south hundreds of miles before eventually melting away. Bears can live off body fat for weeks between meals as evidenced by the author describing a very thin layer of body fat.

Exciting scene. They say if you see a black bear, try to make noise and scare it away, if you see a grizzly, play dead, and if you see a polar bear, there's nothing you can do. Even worse than a grizzly.

First hour and 40 minutes I thought it to be an excellent reading, then suddenly reader decides to use voice characterizations, terrible characterizations. I'll never understand why grown men feel the need for these imitations. Your women voices are disturbing and a little girls characterization is nothing more or less then creepy.
