Zahni, thanks! I use the Cambridge Latin Course in my own classroom, and Ecce Romani in an online class that I also teach.

Really appreciate this. I'm using Lingua Latina Per Se Illustrata and I couldn't wrap my head around this exactly, but this video solved it for me.

There are some different concepts in latin which you can't understand just as intuitivelly, and need some more explanation outside

Thank you so much for your videos! I'm doing Latin at university and have found your content a great way of revising. Out of interest what text books do you use in your own class room?

Thanks, and spread the word. I'm at the mercy of RU-vid, of course... I used to be capable in French and German, with an understanding of ancient Greek grammar, but time has a way of chipping away at once solid foundations.

What about "mansurus fueram" and "mansurus fuero"? Are you likely to encounter a future participle with a plusquam perfect or future exactum tense?
@latintutorial
@latintutorial 9 лет назад
Not likely, but the grammars (e.g., Allen and Greenough) do give it as a possibility.

would the Romans also have said " I would like to" instead of " I want to " ? thank you for all your great videos! for all the work!
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 7 лет назад
They would have said it using the subjunctive forms of volo, since Latin did not have a conditional mood/tense (that form developed later as Vulgar Latin became the various Romance languages). "I would like to" would therefor be "velim," and I would have liked to" would be "voluissem."
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 7 лет назад
They would have used the Imperfect Subjunctive "vellem" for "I would like to" and the Pluperfect Subjunctive"voluissem" for "I would have liked to. Latin didn't have conditional tenses, which is what "I would like" and "I would have liked to" really are. Those didn't develop until after Vulgar Latin started becoming the Romance languages.

Why shouldn't we translate it as "will" or "shall" ?

İ've just discovered this from ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iJOB45kschA.html . Makes İ wonder if there's any other modern spoken language with this form. Anyway, thank you very much for the video! -Colonia, August 2023.

I do hate how american Latin's case table is different to English. For those who care; we use nominative, vocative, accusative, genitive, dative, genitive and ablative. I think our way is much better.
@Magwamagwa
@Magwamagwa 8 лет назад
+Aibohphobe but in terms of learning, the English system presents better patters to learn
@Magwamagwa
@Magwamagwa 8 лет назад
+Aibohphobe yes indeed, locatative and vocative are both somewhat redundant and archaic but I feel we ought to preserve them simply to expose linguists to their ideas and to allow them to have a more thorough understanding of languages as a whole
@Magwamagwa
@Magwamagwa 8 лет назад
As I see it, Latin should be a very pure example of a language as it is in effect, grounded and does not develop any more thus an excellent example for any linguist to draw connections between, ergo by preserving the archaic ways we allow Latin to be more functional in the modern world without changing its grammar
