Global Cycling Network I think in 2038, even sooner, we will see bicycle riding become a more commonplace mode of transportation in urban areas, primarily in mid size cities where currently the infrastructure for cycling does not exist, or is just starting to be built. Exciting!
Well first of all (and most importantly) it will be episode 1293 of the GCN show! And secondly, I reckon bikes will finally start coming out with the necessary measurement electronics integrated in the bike, allowing you to just connect your preferred display on a universal mount. Hopefully this happens even sooner.
@@woolfel wow- got to be a hard core nutter to go for that option. Can't imagine trying for a kom balancing on rollers with variable resistance. Too many breakable things in my living room (myself included) for that.
one of my friends has a smart roller with USB attachment that lets him use it with Zwift. I personally don't use smart roller due to a lack of skill. Other people have used smart rollers on zwift and there's videos of it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_dYm4X4otoI.html
It's 20 years from now and I'm in the nursing home and I'm not too happy about it. But they let me volunteer in their thrift store. And I complain when they make me wash the donated bikes out back. But I'll be out of here soon. I've stashed an old ten-speed behind the dumpster and it's a beauty, a little heavy but who cares. I'll be riding like the wind this Saturday night at midnight. And I'll be already gone when they check my laptop and realize I was watching GCN videos all day, like my favorite, Escapees from the Home.
WHen I overtake a cyclist, I must admitt, I am also distracted sometimes... looking what bike he/she is driving and hoping it is not better then the one in my garage... ;-)
Maarten Meynen yeah, my girlfriend now points out when I’m checking out the bikes we’re passing on the road or pull up next to at a stop light. Oh well, I suppose it’s safer than her pointing out me checking out other stuff. 😂
I was taking driving lessons in the east end of London after work in winter, so it was always night time. I cycled to and from work most evenings, except for the days of my lessons where I'd get the tube home. One evening I was making the rounds with my instructor; we were turning right at a junction and as I pulled away my instructor slammed on the brakes. Just seconds away from us was a cyclist in the oncoming lane I hadn't seen. In my defence, it was 8PM in December and the guy had no lights on his bike or reflective clothing, however I still should have seen him and I have no idea how I didn't. I was so shaken after the incident I had to pull over for 5 minutes to recompose myself. The experience has made me a much more defensive driver and cyclist.
There really should be a societal expectation that all non-motorists--a cyclist or runner or pedestrian or whatever--should make themselves visible with lights and bright colors and such. It is hard to spot a dark object against a dark background, even for the most observant of us.
Everlasting bike parts.... Marketing: what a great idea, we are gonna sell loads!!!! Engineering: But then we wont sell parts. Marketing: Lets just say they last longer and decrease the weight, can you do that. Engineering: so same procedure as the last 30 years....check we are on it.
I'll be 80 than too... but I hope to ride on the road though. Look at Kona - a 86 year old from Japan just finished the Ironman WC... so it's not impossible
Ultimate cycling champion. With all of the presenters, from all of the channels (@GCN, @GMBN, @EMBN, @TCN) you could have the ultimate presenter challenge. Who would come out on top? It'd be a great video (series?) as I'm sure there is no competition between the channels.....
sorry guys - but Daniela Ryf does deserve that Wattage Bazooka much more than Cam Wurf! Though his bike split was impressive, Danielas was even more impressive by far!!! Compare: Cam was 3'48" faster than the previous record, Daniela was more than 18' faster! And, as a woman, she was only about 17' min slower than Cam over those 180 km - that is next level!
We should also note that there were virtually no winds in Kona last Saturday during the world championships, which is unheard of. Usually there are very strong cross and head winds along the Queen K highway. This led to record breaking all around. What Si and Ollie don't mention was the stellar performance of Daniela Ryf. The now 4 time women's world champion smashed the 19 year old bike record, in a time of 4:26:07, even after being stung by a Jellyfish -- twice. Maybe I'm biased, but that sounds more impressive in my book.
I can see a future where there are multi-bike quadrathlons (pent, hex, etc). One tier on the road, transitioning to a segment on gravel, one an XC MTB, one aero, one a CX course, a DH or even Fat section. All it takes is land/roads/trails, and people with bikes. Or I could see a stage race of sorts of 4-7 stages, with each discipline on a separate day. I can also see more wild XC, Gravel or CX events that are like Tough Mudder, or Rugged Maniac, with "obstacle" sections where fans can gather as you ride through a mix of fire, blow up pylons and pontoons, mud puddles wit hidden deep spots, etc. I don't however see the UCI doing this. Pro cycling is very slow to change.
Ollie regularly looks like he has some wise crack to make throughout the videos he is in. Cracks me up...and makes me wonder what is running through his head. Lol!
Mentioning Cam Wurf, I would award wattagebazooka trophy to Daniela Ryf, who smashed Kona WC bike record by 18minutes and made last 70km on a bike just 2minutes slower than Cam ;)
The lack of wheel saves space in tiny Brooklyn apartments, the front end rocks so there is better road feel plus less stress on the frame while on the trainer.
I agree with the safety stats, my mates call me a rolling Christmas tree during the winter months as I have lights pointing in every direction, two wheel lights, two rear bike lights, one rear helmet light, one forward helmet light, one large front light plus two small flashers. Can't beat the old slogan, "be bright, be seen".
Re: Rear facing Garmin mounted on track bike. You need to upgrade this to a hack, as the genius bit is that the next rider behind in the string can read the display and know how fast he is going. Once everyone is set up the same, then you're all good!
Nice to see you guys publicising the danger of prostate cancer. It runs in my family too.. My dad died in 2001 of it.. so get an annual PSA test if your over 50, it could save your life. Off to get my 2019 test tomorrow..
On my way home the other night, I met three bicyclists in the oncoming Lane. With the sun low behind them, they we're very difficult to see with the sun in my eyes. Although it was still light, some type of flashing lights would have been very beneficial. I just started riding a bicycle again this year and I always ride with a strobe out back to try to catch the attention of drivers especially around sunrise or sunset.
I agree with everything you guys said about our cycling future. By 2038 I’m imagining cycling infrastructure being like Copenhagen everywhere. There are going to be so many positive changes.
I've been riding a hacked 1x10 speed (shimano xt rear mech, alfine cranks) with a filed down worn alfine 44t chainring (the original alfine chainguard was too big for the new 39t chainring) for 6 years! It works great even without a clutch rear mech (for commuting, no heavy offroad). And me too I discovered GCN when I was looking for an instruction on how to service shimano cup and cone hubs...
1) Those planned non-UCI antics by the EF-Drapac-Cannondale squad are very much welcome, thank you (I thought they'd never catch up to the stars of 'cross). Can't beat more exposure of other cycling events, courtesy of the pros. 😁 Variety will be king. I decree it. 😂 2) What if between 5-20 years, some bikes turn modular, but not really departing from the classic/compact frame designs we currently have? Also, I'd love to see bikes w/c can be more easily maintained (yes, I'm a huge fan of great belt drives and pinion gear boxes) and more e-bikes designed loads better for old folks, the injured (ouch) and the fellows who lost limbs or something. 3) Hey Ollie, Cebu is pronounced Sèbu. :) Now that reminds me: I've wanted to visit my sister-in-law's place for quite a while now, located in the southeast portion of the province of Cebu. 😁
That first hack/bodge-I think the reason the block is better than using a front wheel is because it takes up less space. Wouldn’t be room for the front wheel and the fan in front of the bike. Closer to the tv so he can get super close to Zwift on the screen and make the virtual feel even more realistic?
Honestly do you think any of your sponsors are spending a penny on developing products people will never have to replace or maintain.... they can't even ride 150km without a F**KING TEAM CAR!!!
Just to clear something up, Cam Wurf's bike split wasn't the fastest "ironman" bike split, it was the fastest KONA ironman bike split. I think some people might mis-interpret that. The fastest bike split is around 4:07, but different course.
The red hook crit vid was great, more similar please. Take a look a Juliet Elliott’s red hook upload. Her crash trumps James’ crash! , One tough cookie
Daniella Ryf also smashed the Kona cycling record (women's), had a faster bike leg than most men, and she actually went on to WIN the race (unlike Wurf), her 4th in a row, and the fastest Kona ever. How about a wattage bazooka for Ryf, and equal opportunity and whatnot. cheers!
Hi, just popping in for a visit from the future - 2020. We have this thing now called the COVID Pandemic. You should read up on it. Might want to revisit the question of how much you'll be using Zwift vs. riding out-doors.
I do think we will be riding trialthon like bikes because of the aerodynamics. They will however have internal gears like Rohlloff and have a bit more onboard storage for the stuff you need to take with you. And they will be electric, limited to 25 km/h in rural aereas and on location with a lot of traffic, and unlimited to 45 km/h anywhere else. All this together will make it easy to bike to any destination within a range of 50-100 km and forget about cars altogether. For longer distances you will be able to hop on a train.
David brooklins wheel stand is good for fact it takes up less space too,and stops you from putting stress on same part of wheel for prolonged periods of time
Pretty realistic prediction: aero frames with clearance up to 36mm, and we will probably be moving away from carbon fiber into graphene or another material which we havent heard of yet.
On Davids from Brooklyn. If he had a front wheel on his bike it would not fit in the space he wanted it to. The box has a smaller foot print and it tapers up ward.
Fair enough giving Cam Wurf the Wattage Bazooka, but what you may have missed was the fact that Female Winner - Daniella Ryf, was ONLY about 2 mins slower than Wurf on a 90min return stretch of the same course!
Not suggesting sexism Andy, as Cam Wurf is a former pro cyclist so I get the 'vs Triathletes' angle - but even so (and being careful not to sound sexist myself) He was fast but relatively her performance is likely even better. Worth a shared WB at least!
When you start killing floor duing the video and exactly when ollie says"Nightmare" that electronic, slightly creepy sound from Tripwire Studios comes on
What about mixing zwift with elements from Mario Kart, Road Rash and Rock'n'Roll Racer? You can't go wrong, I'd play it so much my FTP would double in a month.
If crashes on Zwift are 2038 then I'm a bloody time traveller. Long story short, make sure your rear fork is securely attached to your indoor trainer before launching into a sprint on Zwift...
IMHO, the future of cycling is "all road". Not necessarily "gravel" but bikes built robust enough to handle the crumbling infrastructure that's bound to happen if things don't change. I ride in the USA, you should see the condition of the roads / paths here. You need 32mm tires minimum to just roll over some of it, and that's in the big cities. Push out into the countryside and you almost need suspension forks on "pavement".
Great show again guys 👍🏼 I think we need a game. How is Ollie going to wear his hair today? One more question. Ae John Travolta’s hands worked by string 😁
As part of a cars MOT it should be fitted with a mobile phone jammer If the engine is running this stops any signal But the passenger won't be able to use one ether I hear people say #ToughShit is what I say Almost as bad a distraction having a passenger yaking on the phone as the driver doing it IMHO
20 years fly by in the blink of an eye, and I'd like a bike with a powerful, lightweight motor that can either compliment my power or give me miles of motorcycle-like speed when I need or want it. And I'd be fine with having this be classified as a bicycle/motorcycle for legal/insurance reasons. And I'd still kick it old-school with a Sting-Ray or something from the days of my youth, something the retirement home allows me to ride during recess.
The War on the Roads - have you not seen The Terminator? Once self-driving cars become self aware, Cybernet will be in control and we will all be toast.
At the start of the show i misheard Ollie, saying: This week we are staring into our Krystal Boyd. I immediatly thought, that it´s a bit wierd for a cycling channel, but it´s just gonna be the best show ever... then i realised what he really says, and was a bit dissapointed...
Interesting that you pronounced Prius as Pree Us. On the old Top Gear, they pronounced it Pry Us. We Yanks are having quite the impact on the Queen's English. :-)
