Future Islands - Like the Moon 

The woman in the Russian sci fi movie is Yelena Metyolkina. For an actor of the time, she had a distinctly alien vibe, and before acting was a model for GUM, the big Soviet department store. Russian sci fi is a rabbit hole worth falling down - the filmmakers had to be careful to avoid running into the buzz saw of censorship, so they were very allegorical and crafty. Often with the low budgets, they had to pare down special effects and crank up storytelling. As a result, some of the films are truly haunting and spectacular. This film (Через тернии к звёздам) is one of those, but check out Letters from a Dead Man and of course Solaris and Stalker from Tarkovsky.

This has got to be my favourite unofficial music video to a song.

Wonderful music video!👍 I watched this sci-fi "Per Aspera Ad Astra"/ "Сквозь Тернии к Звездам" (1981) in my childhood and remember that I was completely mesmerized by these big beautiful intelligent eyes of Neeya (actress Elena Metelkina). They were like dark infinite space itself... There is something in the film, which makes it still magnetic and "immortal" to me even after 30 years. Highly recommended!

Every once in a while you find a song that is so perfect and masterful that it really makes you take a step back and just sit in awe. This song is that for me, it comes so damn rarely, but I guess that's what makes that fateful discovery so great. If I got it all the time, it would only serve to cheapen the wonder. This video gives me such a 'watching MTV after midnight in the 90's and discovering a great unknown artist'. The imagery fitted so seamlessly with the music, I don't know if there's an official video, but if not, this one should be it!

Fun fact: This movie was on Mystery Science Theater 3000 under the title "Humanoid Woman" on the KTMA-TV days of the show. The edit was obviously butchered by the distribution company "Sandy Frank", but it is quiet a visually stunning movie.

I love this song and depth of what it is to understand. She was from another place that was badly damaged it made her afraid to trust and live again. I have been through that. It takes so much to let go and start over. To trust again and go on with life the best we can after being hurt.

i love this video-- as someone who has suffered trauma, the video of the girl having flashbacks to pollution of her world while actively living on a planet that is free from such, paired with the singers longing of closeness with a woman out of reach makes this feel too close to me. i relate the visions of pollution to the pain that comes with a close relationship, how awful it can get when you least expect, despite being something that is meant to bring comfort, so you shut out the possibility. the scene especially where the man reaches out to the woman to come into the water, and the woman just stares blankly as she has a flashback. This is something that happens often with my partner, where i will just stare blankly and feel hallow and he'll try to get through to me but he cant-- and ill feel bad about it worrying if he thinks its him or his fault that hes not enough- which triggers even worse thoughts and flashbacks. so yeah with that perspective i get really emotional watching this-- i see myself in that alien woman a lot, just by simply being alien. Even down to the part where she flinches at the prospect of touch

I heard this song for the first time about two years ago, I haven’t heard it in what seems like forever. I forgot the band’s name, the song and the lyrics.. I have been searching for it because I loved it so much and there was just something about it, but the only thing I could really remember was the female, how unique the guy’s voice is and something about a moon.. it’s 4am I’m trying to sleep but I really want to know this song and so I tried sing it in my head (to think of a beat or think of lyrics), what the song was called or the band’s name, I wanted something.. then I thought “what if I try she’s like the moon” that sounds about right... and I see it.. it’s her.. my heart stopped and I felt so happy and relieved.. I still love this song and I can’t believe I actually found it lol I thought I lost it forever, I’m glad I didn’t.
