One day I had a one on one with my advisor and she advised me to stop working. 😭😭😭I was so mad for the longest because how tf am I supposed to pay for everything? Also not To mention life back at home with a Mexican family is hard sometimes, and nobody seemed to understand me. But luckily I have found two mentors at my school who always help me and are lenient with dead lines. 🙏

I related hard to Irvin's story 🥺 I always knew growing up that my parents and I were immigrants, but I didn't know what that meant for myself and my future. Towards the end of my high school freshman year, all my friends started talking about getting summer jobs and that's when reality hit me that I was limited in the things I could do unlike my peers 😮‍💨 I felt that anger, resentment and frustration that Irvin mentions. I couldn't understand why my parents thought the US was a better opportunity for me when i couldn't even get into college without papers. I started thinking the same and thought, "What is all this for I'm doomed!" But similar to Irvin, that was the year DACA was announced. I remember the tears in my moms face and the shock and excitement on my dad's. My dad got on my application ASAP, and he didn't care what he had to pay they were gonna make sure they got me on DACA.

Speaking to Irvin’s point about undocumented folks not being eligible for federal loans, that’s because of a federal law (the Higher Education Act), that technically could be changed. When I went to my graduate school interviews to become a mental health counselor I was the only Hispanic and I felt so overwhelmingly intimidated and when I entered the program I was the only Hispanic there. The DACA story touched my heart bc when I tried to become a clinical psychologist, even shortly after daca, I was told it wasn’t realistic considering I couldn’t afford it and didn’t qualify for most scholarships ONLY due to my status. This came from a counselor and led to me changing my entire path. I don’t regret it but it hurts to know that this is the standard for how Latinos are treated in higher education. Still, I’m so happy to hear people like you guys chose to keep fighting and spreading this message!

25:25 - when Irvin said “the higher you go up in your education, the less diversity…” can totally understand that. I'm also a first-gen Latina who went to grad school & had to pave my own way. I was very grateful to have my friend who was also in grad school (she went to UCLA & I went to USC) & we supported each other through our grad school journey! I had counselors, including a Latina counselor at one point, tell me something similar -- that not many Latinos take school seriously yet alone graduate. My school counselor also told me not to shot high because I didn’t have papers. After years of working hard and being one of the top students of my high school, to hear her say that I had no future was hard. She said I wouldn’t have the money to pay for college. My mom was there and told her to kick rocks 🤣 that I would go to college no matter what. I graduated with a bachelors degree with a full ride scholarship. I love seeing first gen and Latinos pursuing higher education. Especially in a career as challenging as Medicine. I hope they continue to excel in their careers and wish them continued greatness. Also something no one talks about is how to navigate higher income with taxes, retirement, insurance etc. I have had to learn personal finance by myself. That even though the paycheck is great how can I allocate my money to taxes, retirement, investing ( mutual funds etc), health insurance etc. I see so many people make great incomes but spend all their money in the mamalona, lavish parties etc and have no money in investing, retirement etc.

This episode is forever my favorite. I am now a Hispanic RN communicating with my people in our native language. Also was undocumented at the start of my journey. I love this ❤❤ it inspires me to inspire.

Thank you so much for having them! Iriving is so relatable to me.. DACA! first generation ! Having your high school “counselors” telling you to find a new dream !!! I went through that too and I’m sure countless others have as well. Thank you La Plática for giving these men a platform to share their stories. I am so proud of them.

Damn , it was the way Sebas talked down to Josh that made this episode hard to watch ! Instead of taking over the questions he wanted to watch him struggle , not a real one.

I’m pretty sure Sebas was bothered because Josh said he was a snake, I don’t remember what the question was though.

Loved this episode. Shout out to all the Latinos pursuing higher education or who have gotten advanced degrees. The struggles you face throughout this process are one too many to count. Keep going, it’s not easy whatsoever but it is worth it. From a fellow MBA graduate 🫶🏼

@FoosinMedicine I’m just an individual that you don’t know but I would like you’s to know that as a Latina seeing Latinos be doctors is absolutely inspiring. My parents aren’t fluent in English and having a bilingual doctor to treat them is such a heart warming and comfort feeling. Thank you and we are all rooting for you both! And every single latin@ in the medical field!

This makes me so happy and so proud. I understand them completely. I am 1/2 Hispanic nurse practitioner in my county in Alabama. I work with 90% Spanish speaking patients and undocumented as well. It is truly a blessing to be able to help my people the way I wish my parents could’ve been treated when they first got to this country. It really makes a difference seeing people that look like you exceed the expectations! We will continue to rise ✊

Love this! And what you guys are doing with LA Plática! We need more stories like these. As a daughter of immigrant parents this hits deep. As a First generation student who also went to CSUN I was always so proud of how far I got , but wasn't completely satisfied because I felt like I didn't fit in. So motivating and que viva la raza.❤🎉 So motivational
