The mayor of paris, Anne Hidalgo, has announced a €250 million plan to revamp one of the city’s most famous landmarks - the champs-élysées. often referred as the most beautiful avenue in the world, the 1.9km (1.2mile) long avenue will be transformed into an ‘extraordinary garden’, offering a place of experience and contemplation for parisians and tourist alike.
designed by PCA-stream, the makeover plans will not be set in motion before the 2024 summer olympics, as reported by the guardian. the plans include the reduction of vehicles by half, transforming roads into green areas dedicated to pedestrians, and creating tunnels of trees that will help to improve the overall air quality of the area which is quite polluted - even more than the frequented périphérique ring road.
the overall vision for the district located between the champs-élysées roundabout and the arc de triomphe builds up the quality of use over a period of ten years through the reduction of nuisances (noise, heat, car traffic…) and improving comfort (air quality, spaces given back to pedestrians…),’ PCA-stream says. ‘the étoile intersection is reinvented as a public plaza geared towards tourists and parisians who come to contemplate the arc de triomphe. on the avenue, the promenade experience makes a comeback and flâneurs will be able to stroll up and down the historic boulevard in an atmosphere greatly improved by the reduction in motor traffic.’

Paris, the city with charm, elegant and with amazingly beautiful historical attractions, and the food, the French coffee and the smell of French baguette, I have been there 3 times and still wanting to come back for more. Looking forward for the new Paris in 2024 and the restoration of the word famous Notre-Dame in 2026. Thank you for sharing the video clip

It doesnt matter if you can clearly see whats what, research has already shown separating the pedestrian+bike area away from the car street through physical barriers (whether the sidewalk is elevated or there are pillars) is safer. This rendering feels safer because the pedestrian area is so large relative to the street. If you had large streets with dinty little sidewalks like what is common in America, I guarantee you would not feel safer being on the same elevation.
@mareikes5923
@mareikes5923 3 года назад
I guess the only problem is the safety. In europe, we had in the last years many attacks by people driving their cars on the walkway to kill pedestrians. It would be safer if the walkway wasn't the same height, to prevent these attacks. But I agree it feels better without them and is also wheelchair friendly.

Also: This is Paris, not some bumfuck in the remote American midwest where cities don't even bother to install sidewalks as people use their cars to get everywhere. Of course you can't just throw the cars out, leave the rest to an underfunded Public Transport System and call it a day. Additional Concepts need to be found.

Prepare for an unstable metro, bus, and highway system in all of Paris like it isn't already if you want to make the fucking Champs Elysees 'less congested', which is the busiest road of the whole city who connects the most important parts to eachother. There's a reason Paris was designed this way..
@Exodon2020
@Exodon2020 3 года назад
Paris was never designed for cars though. And unlike the US they didn't demolish the inner city to make room for direct Highway access which just ended up worsening the situation.

@@_M_o_n_k_e Mobilizing an army works a little different today than it did 150 years ago and ironically the French insisting of using Paris as a hub for mobilized troops did cost them the initiative in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870. Due to its Confederate Nature Germany had a highly decentralized railroad network, allowing for troops to be raised and sent out locally while in France every soldier who didn't live on the way between Paris and Alsace had to get to Paris first.

Im french myself. What are those big quadrilatere? Looks gross. Then around the arc de triomphe they deleted the 100 little lamps that represented Napoleon, really disrespectful, just for a bunch of trees. On the place de la concorde they add gardens however they overpass one side: they should be only inside where the trenches used to be in the past

You can restrict private vehicles to a degree but you still have a large public sector relying on individual transportation such as emergency services and garbage disposal. You'll find people have to move every now and then and the easiest way to pull that off still is by organizing a moving van.

This great for Paris and is highly achievable for them. Paris needs to revitalize this area to make it more walking friendly. I went to Paris a few years ago and Champs-Élysées is, well was full of cars and motorcycles. Also it provides a big spot for the the tourist which relives other areas of the city and in turn locals can enjoy more like they used to. Basically is a win win even without the Olympics (which is a waste of $ at this point).
