Future unclear for Dali and its crew after bridge collapse

They are inside the ship that's been plastered on television screens across the globe for weeks on end. But none of us have seen or heard from them.
As massive cranes lifted pieces of the Key Bridge out of the Patapsco River around them, as divers searched the debris-filled waters for bodies below them, and even as explosive charges detonated, breaking apart millions of pounds of steel right above them, the 21-man crew has remained on board the Dali.
Their only face-to-face interactions have been with investigators and salvage crews.

Ship that hit Baltimore bridge also involved in 2016 Antwerp accident By Reuters March 26, 20249:40 PM GMT+2Updated March 26 (Reuters) - The ship that caused the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday was also involved in an accident in the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016. The Antwerp port authorities said the container ship Dali hit a quay on July 11, 2016, as it tried to exit the North Sea container terminal. A 2016 inspection of the vessel conducted in Antwerp found it had a structural issue, which was stated as “hull damage impairing its seaworthiness," according to data published on Equasis, a public database for the shipping industry. The port authorities said the ship had remained at the dock for repairs for some time after the incident. "As a general rule, these accidents are investigated and ships are only allowed to leave after experts have determined it is safe for them to do so," a spokesperson for Antwerp port told Reuters. The Belgian nautical committee, which investigates such incidents, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson representing the ship's owner could not immediately be reached.

The Port of Baltimore must also share some if not most of the responsibility for the disaster since they failed to install adequate protection dolphins to protect the bridge - and especially this type of bridge structure - after thee 1960s report by the NTSB to all ports concerning the risk of damage by ships or like New York and other ports insist large ships be tethered to tugs on entering and leaving port. The owners of Dali can point to the recent failure of another ship's power system when leaving New York with no adverse consequences due to the presence of tugs. This is also a requirement in major European ports so the risks are well known in the shipping industry.

I think the untold story here is that the clearance operations go a lot smoother with an experienced crew on the ship who can switch on power when necessary. The ship may also float again at an, due to tides and weather, not entirely predictable point in time. Since a ship of this size may do a lot of damage when drifting, you'd want to stay the crew on all the time. And since there is no way you could force an American crew to stay on a damaged ship 24/7, it's quite convenient that it's just some Indians who are not allowed to leave the ship without visa.

Hi Elizabeth, unfortunately before the crew of the Dali is able to leave the ship the same has to be first salvaged, meaning it has to be towed away from the spot where is sitting right now. We have to remember the M/V Dali, after hitting the bridge, ran aground, and is currently stucked in the sand under water on the edge on the main channel, and that operation may take some additional time, perhaps a couple of more weeks to be completed. We just have to be patient, that operation is far more complicated than what the general public think it is. I have extensive training in marine operations with vessels of up to 180.000 DWT, which is as much as twice the M/V Dali 90.000 DWT, I know what I am talking about, bst rgs

The "Cover-up" continues but now, in plain sight. There are only a small handful of people that were in charge of this catastrophe that need to be held responsible for this Criminal Action.. The DECKHANDS ... Get them out of the Country.. The people in CHARGE ... That even includes the Harbour Master(s) and Pilot(s) ... They need to be Charged and Held for their Criminal Responsibilities.. WE ALL KNOW who is gonna PAY for THIS .. for the rest of their lives..

This is beyond ridiculous, 7 weeks at sea. the ship will not be able to go anywhere soon, it needs extensive repairs. why not provide adequate accommodation for the crewmembers, while all these is going on, shame on the authorities for such treatment. This is just inhumane and wrong 👎🤦
@brianbarbarich1401
@brianbarbarich1401 28 дней назад
Crew members have adequate accommodation onboard. They normally do contracts from 4 to about 8 months onboard the ship. They have food and water and are still getting paid. Even although the ship is currently stationary it is still a working ship so crew need to be onboard. I can understand that the crew, especially senior officers and Captain and Chief Engineer must be feeling the heat and having sleepless nights, and having to continuously deal with Athorities, Owner, Charterer, Lawyers, Insurance Company and other relevant parties. When an accident happens in USA waters things are taken very seriously, especially investigations to establish the cause of accident including all things leading up to accident that may have contributed. This will be a long drawn out exercise and very costly for certain involved parties.
@passerau
@passerau 27 дней назад
@brianbarbarich1401 The journey from Baltimore to Sri Lanka only takes 27 days. It has been 52 days and counting. You don't need 20 crew members to keep a ship afloat; 5 to 7 at most is sufficient, as the crew usually works in rotation. Additionally, a ship will always stop every 3 to 4 weeks for maintenance, rest, and refueling along its itinerary. Please stop, just stop. Ty🙏
@brianbarbarich1401
@brianbarbarich1401 27 дней назад
@passerau are you a seafarer or ex seafarer? Your points seem like they from a person who does not have a clear understanding about how shipping actually works and with the relevant laws pertaining to how many crew members need to be onboard a vessel at any one time.
@regould221
@regould221 27 дней назад
Are you saying that the accommodations on the ship are not adequate considering its the accommodations the crew has when they are at sea for months at a time.

@regould221 your question is not understandable. Please ask in a clear, consice manner relating to seafarers onboard ship's. I have been a seafarer for many years and your questions are confusing and display lack of shipping knowledge.

Yeah give them there phones back. Get them tickets home. There hast to be a fair resolution. Why wasn't there better dolphin protecting the bridge? Do not treat the crew bad. They did there best to resolve the problem the did extremely well warning the authorities about the problem and to shut down the bridge this could have been so much worse the only reason the bridge crew was working on the bridge and didn't know it was cuz nobody knew to tell them get off the bridge. They had shut down the bridge with saved tons of lives. If it wasn't for these ships coming in and out of the ports we would not have jobs for all the locals you have no idea how much these ships actually contribute to the communities that they deliver goods too.
@Bonjour-World
@Bonjour-World 28 дней назад
"fair resolution" means the shipping company pays the entire cost of the salvage, reconstruction and wrongful deaths. Until then the ship, officers and crew should be held pending settlement.
