Futuristic or Reality? The Boring Company's Tunnels Under Las Vegas

Imagine being able to take a Tesla underground through a tunnel with stops at the airport, hotels and downtown. This isn’t something from a futuristic sci-fi movie. It’s the Vegas Loop, and it could become a reality in Las Vegas. Elon Musk’s Boring Company is making it happen.
The proposed plan would include 54 miles of tunnel with 69 stops from as south as Blue Diamond and Las Vegas Boulevard all the way north to the Fremont Street Experience. Currently the loop exists only at the convention center with a leg to Resorts World, but tunneling is actively happening to the Encore and the Westgate.
All Vegas Loop stops within city of Las Vegas limits are proposed at this time.

NYC subway lines are at max 5k to 30k/hr depending on the line. You also have to evaluate a system on its cost per passenger. NYC new subway line is atrociously expensive to build compared to the smaller TBC tunnels. Finally, you have to design a system based on the city's needs: why build a network of subway lines for 250k/hr if you only need 5 to 10k/hr????

@@Firebert That is a solution to higher volume for trains. And it will be the solution to higher volume in the Loop. They'll run more cars. I think they'll also add higher capacity vehicles. They aim to succeed, so they'll do what it takes. That brings up a downside to trains. What do trains do when volume is low? I have been the only person in a train car designed to hold a hundred people. At that moment the train didn't seem very efficient. In my experience, metro systems deal with low volume by running trains less frequently. So instead of a train coming every two or three minutes, you may have to wait 10 minutes or longer. With a TBC loop system, they can take cars out of the system without reducing service levels at all. Some cars taken out of operation will go for charging or maintenance. But many idle cars will simply park at the stations. Then if passengers arrive at the station looking for a ride, the vehicle to take them to their destination is already there waiting for them. Their wait time is zero.

To prevent using mountains of batteries, use a pantograph system to save resources. And another good idea is to use guided tracks with metal wheels, so it'll always stay on course and you don't need to replace the tires every few years. It'll also reduce friction, making it more energy efficient. With that, those are some improvements to make this futuristic system even better!

Looks like the system requires more drivers for it's short 2 miles than an entire county wide bus system. Speaking of garbage; in the future the completed 69 station system may be useful for garbage collection (and dirty linen services too). You got this system of underground sewer sized tunnels connecting all the major hotels and convention halls. Why not repurpose it for trash collection, dirty linen collection and the like? Trash does not mind taking forever to navigate through an underground labyrinth. Just take everything to a centralized site from which it can be hauled off to a dump, recycling center, laundry services etc.

@brianwithoutay2291

So how exactly do you just "add more tunnels" when your single lane tunnels keep backing up with traffic? If you add more tunnels next to or below it as The Boring Company videos suggest with their catchphrase of going "3D" wouldn't that significantly impact the existing tunnel? Usually with existing underground structures there is a certain bearing zone below and adjacent to it you never want to disrupt without carefully coordinated shoring and/or supplemental foundations to redistribute the load path. Running a boring machine directly adjacent to or below an existing tunnel does not sound like that process. The existing tunnel could shift out of position, experience lots of settlement and segments of it could potentially sink into newly created sink holes. If the answer is that you space the tunnels far enough apart horizontally and vertically so this does not become a problem then the argument of going "3D" to save space falls apart even more. The cross-section profile of this system would be pretty massive just to match the capacity of a 2 or 4 lane road. Don't forget if you need to add tunnels to increase capacity you have to enlarge the underground stations as well to provide portals for those tunnels as well as increase the number of pickup and drop off spots or else each of your single lane tunnels will back up just as before. None of this seems well thought out. The guy in the video suggests "just adding tunnels" as if it's a simple matter because Elon said so.
@kevinbailey8827
@kevinbailey8827 Год назад
It seems from the quote that their engineers are designing the system with an eye toward safely adding more tunnels if the need arises. The new tunnels wouldn’t necessarily be directly adjacent to existing ones.
@brianwithoutay2291
@brianwithoutay2291 Год назад
@@kevinbailey8827 if the new tunnels cannot be directly adjacent to the existing ones that means it will take up significantly more space than a regular multi-lane road. Building underground is not freely available space. Everything that is built underground will restrict what can be built above ground. What's already built above ground restricts what can be built underground. Overall it's just an incredibly stupid idea and we all know this already. Just because an idea is different it does not mean it is innovative. Stockton Rush thought he was being innovative by bucking tradition and designing a submersible with a carbon fiber hull. We all know how that turned out.
@kevinbailey8827
@kevinbailey8827 Год назад
@@brianwithoutay2291 That's ridiculous. These tunnels aren't being built with carbon fiber. If loop systems ever reach parity with traditional tried and true train systems in terms of deaths per year, you can celebrate. So far there haven't been any in the loop. A train I was on this year killed one person, and a train in India killed hundreds. So we know how that turned out. I know, I'm comparing apples with submarines. The engineers have said they're building the current tunnels with the expectation of adding more tunnels to the system later. I'm not privy to their plans, but if I were them I wouldn't pay much attention to your insistence that new tunnels have to be built adjacent to old tunnels.
@brianwithoutay2291
@brianwithoutay2291 Год назад
@@kevinbailey8827 you are completely missing the point. It's called an ANALOGY! I am talking about the hubris of ignoring existing science and accepted practice just because you think 'disruption' for sake of 'disruption' sounds good in a TED Talk. I've been on a train too that ran over a person. Imagine the sound of a train running over a Christmas tree but instead of hearing splintering branches it's bones. It was a shocking and disturbing experience but it was a suicide and not the fault of the train. Regardless you are making meaningless comparisons. Elon Musk is not proposing the Vegas Loop, conventionally known as a 'Fixed Route Underground Taxi' as a one off novelty system. He is proposing it as a transportation solution for cities on the scale of Los Angeles. If you are going to defend this concept you need to map out and rationalize how it will work. Do the calculations, draw the plans, map out the complete underground terrain of LA. The Boring Company simply gave us bullshit CGI renderings of all that but if you are going to defend their concepts you need to do the work for them.
@kevinbailey8827
@kevinbailey8827 Год назад
@@brianwithoutay2291 Are you still looking at those renderings from years ago and reacting to them as if that is what they are doing in Las Vegas? That explains a lot! I have looked at what they already built and what they have proposed, and I see a full fledged transportation system. What they have built is working. RU-vid videos from a few years ago that earnestly described how it couldn’t work (using math!) look silly now. It’s not disruption for disruption’s sake. It’s disruption for the sake of solving very real problems with train-based transport systems. I don’t think the full Las Vegas Loop is a fixed route taxi system, though I think it could easily host such a service. I think the approved map is too complex. You could go from any of 69 stations to any other with no intermediate stops. But even calling it a fixed route taxi system tells me that it’s not just disruption for disruption’s sake. That sort of taxi system is an accepted practice. The tunnels are just tunnels, created using conventional methods. The vehicles are cars (currently). They’re electric, which allows the these three conventional technologies to be combined in a way that wasn’t practical a decade ago. I’m not defending it for LA. I’m defending it for Las Vegas. Those maps are already drawn and approved, and some of the tunnels are already under construction. If LA is interested after seeing how it works in Las Vegas, they can start drawing up plans and making proposals.
