yes really good idea using a plant product that actually in Brazil is one of the reasons why the trees are vanishing in the rain forests there , ethanol actually is worse fot the environment but has a better profit margin , the amount of land it takes to produce this liquid is crazy , but as usual that isn't important is it

When E fuels first appeared (E5 in 2011 iirc) I had significant problems with my Reliant, firstly it was down on power and economy and most notable was gasification in that after being on a long run i'd pull into services fill up or whatever then upon starting again to continue the engine would start easily enough but if you touched the accelerator to pull away would have no power and/or stall immediately, I checked and re-checked all the settings (carb, timing, valve clearances etc) but nothing was amiss so in desperation I then tried super unleaded (Alkylate fuel) immediately the engine reverted back to pre E5, so doing a bit of research I found that ethanol boils at 60C° whereas petrol boils at 80C° so because Reliant engines run in a small poorly ventilated engine bay that relies on airflow, when the vehicle stops the "heat soak" from the engine and exhaust heats the carburettor until the ethanol in the fuel in the main jet (SU carb, the main jet is brass which being a copper base alloy has greater thermal conductance than the aluminium alloy of the carb body) gasifies causing gas bubbles in the fuel jet and thus the fuel mixture. I thought I was alone with this problem and it was unique to Reliants until various friends with carburated bikes mentioned a similar problem (this doesn't affect fuel injected systems as the fuel is pressurised until injection) and I suggested trying this which cured the problem for them as well. Ethanol fuel in itself can be used for ICE's but generally require higher compression ratios or boost (super/turbo charging) as it's a relatively slow burning fuel and/or more spark advance (more advance less C.R.) and more fuelling (bigger jets) but when mixed with gasoline on engines not designed for these types of fuels actually becomes a hindrance (the ethanol burns but contributes nothing to the power due to it's slow burn and if you advance the spark detonation will occur from the gasoline (no leading anymore that was added to prevent this)), this is all apart from the hydrscopic issues and rubber (and other materials) component compatibilty. Any case that's my take on the whole E fuels issue.
@stevewilliams2498

What about Carburettor float bowls ? Friends have shown me horrible corrosion in vehicles that have been stored even with drained systems. The fuel left in the float bowls has caused them problems.

Fuel lines you can see - if you look - but O rings in carbs and injectors etc will fail before you see them and what carnage might that cause with high pressure fuel spraying around a hot under bonnet area?
@Steve-bo6ht
@Steve-bo6ht 2 года назад
The only issue I've had on my Landrover Series 2 fitted with the Zenith 361v Carburettor is the expansion of the main O ring led to a very rich erratic idle which is something that was never effected before using the higher ethanol content fuel, I periodically check the fuel hoses and to date don't seem to be affected and I did recently drain the fuel tank to check for water in the fuel and absolutely nothing was untoward and it went back into the tank and used without any problems to report.

I think there is a need for immediate panic. E10 fuel, and then later E20/30 etc will certainly ruin an industry that is worth over £5 Billion pounds to the UK economy. Also this will affect jobs, and companies who work hard to keep older vehicles on the road. This is typical of UK Governments and a downright bloody shambles. What he never mentioned was the drop in fuel economy. From what I've read and after talking to a few people it seem like your buying five tanks of fuel for the original four on E5. Perhaps some of you would like to confirm or deny that statement. They is also the extra tax the Government make on the sale of ethanol from the fuel suppliers. As with all these green ventures, they sometimes are done for the extra revenue.

Fill with petrol e10.. 1 ltr off water . Add food dye. Add the ltr to your petrol .shake the whole container until the petrol get bubbly . .leave over night to settle .or longer. The 10 in E10 represents a percentage, so 10% of 10L is ethanol. Ethanol is hydrophilic, (it sticks to water). 10% of 10L is 1L, so to extract 1L of ethanol from 10L of E10, you add 1L of water. Mix well and allow petrol to separate (probably overnight is best). You'll end up with a 2L water ethanol mix at the bottom and 9L of unleaded petrol on top of it Syphon off the unleaded, and dump the water ethanol mix at your local tip oil tank. You can add octane enhancers to the extracted unleaded if you want. There are several videos up here of people demonstratnig this process. Here's a guy doing it for lawnmowers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7VwxRVATbOQ.html

If your car stands for a while, any water absorbed will indeed sink to the bottom taking with it all the ethanol, can't imagine cars running too well on ethanol and water! I have stripped the carbs from ATV's that have been standing, with the carbs run "dry" and the residue/corrosion is the worst I've ever seen.

Good grief Fuzz... just stick to tinkering with cars mate. Rule of thumb - go by what your car manufacturer / handbook / franchise dealer tells you. Example - my 1991 Toyota Supra Mk3 is cleared to run on E5 but not E10, this is due to the rubber components in the fuel injection system. I had to email Toyota's European HQ in Belgium though to get the answer. So I now run on Premium 'protected grade' 98 octane E5 which is still available in the UK, though you may have to shop around for it. Older Classics from the 1960s/70/80s should also be run on this 'protected grade', as should earlier cars from the 20s through 50s. Yes it costs more per litre but its a darned sight cheaper than modifying or rebuilding or fuel system / engine.

adjust the timing... race engines run on high ethanol fuels

@@insomniacbritgaming1632 but the OEM ECU has little scope for that, it can and does auto adjust to some affect , but its not that great, so is a non starter, and aftermarket chipping is also out as its never been that popular for anything outside of the top end versions of the car.
@insomniacbritgaming1632
@insomniacbritgaming1632 2 года назад
@@pkf4124 all ECU'S can be modified to some degree, but either way, E10 isn't as bad as people are thinking it is. I mean people have been running E85 for years with minimal issues, it burns cleaner, burns lower temps meaning there is less wear on components.

I daily drive pre-war cars only on ethanol fuel E5 for a good couple of years and I have been using E10 since it came out, made sure the fuel pump is with a new diaphragm and gaskets and that the single rubber hose is correctly rated, no water in fuel as it is used regulaarly, no difference in power and no corrosion or blocked carburettor jets. It seems to be a big fuss over nothing to me.
