The Berlin Victory Parade was a chance for the Allies to come together and celebrate the end of World War 2, but as it played out, it would lead to the West becoming increasingly paranoid towards the Soviets.
The revelation of the new Soviet IS-3 heavy tank was a cause for concern amongst the West with it being more powerful than anything they had to show. And if this is what they had in 1946, what would they have in the near future?
Different Western nations then looked for ways to defeat such heavily armoured tanks, and it was the British that would develop a gun so powerful that the vehicle it was mounted to literally shook itself apart when firing.
In this Tank Chat Reloaded, Paul Famojuro (FamTheTankMan) has a detailed look at the L4 183mm gun developed to counter the potential future threat of Soviet heavy armour, as well as the proposed vehicles which would mount the biggest tank gun in history.

According to the London Naval Treaty, if you mount that gun on a light cruiser (a ship of around 10,000 tons displacement) its not a light cruiser any more, its a heavy cruiser.

The British went on a binge in the 1950s to mount large tank guns in lightly armoured turrets to existing tank hulls. The Charioteer was an 84mm 20 Pounder gun mounted on the WW2 Cromwell tank, it saw service 1954 to 1990s. Then the Conway mounted an 120mm gun on a Centurion hull, but only pilot tanks were built. The FV4005 Centaur mounted a 7.2", 183mm L4 gun to a Centurion Mk3 hull. The huge turret was called the "Barn" or more commonly the "Outhouse". For anti-tank work it fired a HESH round not a high velocity APC shell. Only 3 were tested.

HEDS was introduced by France in 1918 (tested by various countries before 1918) APDS was introduced by France around 1940. Then taken up by the British. APFSDS was developed in the US as early as 1943. Germans around the same time. Same with UK. Nobody except Germans get HEFSDS or APFSDS into production before the end of WW2.

The US and French information comes from a 1944 report off the DTIC/NTRL on APDS development in the US where it mentions the 1918 French production of 37/57 and 75 HEDS coming into service in late 1918. British information on acquiring APDS in 1941 from the French comes from a scattering of books following the fall of France and the dispersal of French/Belgium engineers. US ^APDS report also cites a French publication in German about the Germans own work in 43. British reports, for me, come through the DTIC-NTRL and the Canada Heritage online microfilm via the London Military HQ records.

@@kevinbarry71 Well, to be fair, it’s only 183mm/8.2”. On I think it was June 11th 1944 off Gold Beach at Normandy HMS Warspite received a request for fire support onto some woodland where a large concentration of enemy armour and troops had been observed. The original request was I believe for 15 rounds rapid fire from Warspite’s 6 operational 15”/381mm main guns, ( X turret being out of service since Warspite was hit by a Fritz-X bomb in 1943) but it was allegedly misheard as FIFTY rounds of 15”. Rapid fire of her 15” guns did lead to some increasingly off-target results which actually turned out to be fortuitous as the fifty 15” shells effectively helped to chase the enemy out of the woodland.
