Review of the FV4201 Chieftain Proto, a Tier 9 British heavy tank in World of Tanks with premium status. In the first part of the article, we prepared a review of the new tank for those who are still wondering whether to buy it, and then we will move directly to the guide.
The tank will first appear on sale through loot boxes in the Waffentrager: Legacy event; it can drop with a 2.4% probability, like other premium vehicles. Considering the large number of premiums in the boxes, knocking it out will be problematic.
The tank has a 120 mm gun with standard damage of 400 units. The basic projectile is a sub-caliber with good armor penetration of 262 mm, as a special one there is also a sub-caliber with a penetration of 310 mm, both have a high flight speed. You will be pleased with the presence of HESH land mines with 120 mm penetration, which can be used against cardboard equipment.
This is where the good news ends, and we come to the next characteristics of the gun. The reload time and, as a result, damage per minute are average, lower than that of the upgraded Conqueror. The situation is similar with mediocre accuracy and long convergence times. Really convenient vertical aiming angles of -10...+20° can brighten up the situation a little.
Hidden parameters of the technique - stabilization - add discomfort. It’s bad here: after a shot, when turning the hull, when turning the turret, which makes you feel the long aim even more. The Chieftain P has the worst stub in almost all respects among the compared equipment.
The safety margin is one of the smallest - 1800 units, which already seems to encourage careful play. The nominal hull armor is only 80 mm. Even taking into account the reduction, the maximum in the VLD will be up to 240 mm.
In general, there are many vulnerable areas in the frontal projection of the hull, and the NLD is of impressive size and is difficult to miss.
The weak hull armor is compensated by a very strong turret; it is almost impossible to penetrate it in the forehead. By the way, you need to be careful when playing against the terrain; if you turn the gun too much, they will be able to hit you close to the muzzle.
Therefore, the only thing left is to try to aim the turret.
On the other hand, if they come in from the flank, then there is no armor at all on the sides, even the turret from the side is easily penetrated. If you play carefully, you can tank with a diamond shape; after all, the sides are protected by screens, which will save you from cumulative and land mines, but the main thing here is not to overdo it with the rotation of the hull. The main thing is not to expose the fenders to the enemy.
To summarize: absolutely everything will penetrate the hull, but you can carefully catch ricochets from the side. Can confidently play from the tower and tank, but only in a frontal projection.
The tank was deprived of armor, but its mobility was not bad. The tank weighs 50 tons, and the engine it was given is not very powerful, so the output is 15.6 hp/t. It has good cross-country ability, so it has difficulty gaining its 40 km, but it maintains its speed confidently. The turning speed of the chassis is low, so it does not rotate well. The viewing radius of 390 meters is above average.
Let's summarize the tactical and technical characteristics of the FV4201 Chieftain Proto.
Advantages:
good armor penetration of all types of projectiles;
comfortable UVN;
strong tower in frontal projection;
good resistance to all types of soil;
viewing radius.
Flaws:
long mixing time;
poor stabilization;
weak nominal hull armor;
low maneuverability.
The new British premium heavy tank Chieftain P, like previous tier 9 premiums, has its own unique feature (a strong turret), but is very far from being an imba. You will have to “sweat” on this machine always and everywhere, otherwise you will not have time to deal damage or you will quickly go to the Hangar.
