Last night, this video was recommended to me by RU-vid, I watched it for like a minute, immediately subscribed to your channel and spent this morning bingewatching your entire vlog playlist. Awesome content, both behind the scenes and the actual footage, great energy and good info, thanks for that!
@@PDMokry Well I will say that you are putting out some valuable information and interesting too. Cool to see your process and thoughts behind your workflow. There's so much value in that alone.
Can’t believe the grass didn’t blow out while getting acceptable level on talents face. Those were two really clean frames 👌🏻 Happy to see you posting so much
We lucked out with the darker turf for sure! I was excited about this setup, it was a nice change. Hard to keep up with your pace 🤣, you can slow it down, I won’t be mad at you. Maybe in the busy season I can start getting more than one a week.
I was the producer, DP, Gaffer, Grip and Audio. I did get a great deal of help from my right hand man Andrew, who also knows quite a bit about my setups and we came together to make it all happen.
Nice job, that is a challenging mix of large areas of outdoor light spill and indoor lighting which can make it hard to pull off what you did. I especially like the overhead frame and it’s dual purpose! Van tour/explanation video would be pretty cool!
It was a gamble with the natural sunlight coming in. I was betting it would not get any brighter. There were three lights on the ceiling that were pinging that spot, so an 8x8 was barely enough to cut those lights. I must do a full van tour, no excuses!
While uploading a video, RU-vid recommended a video to me about the Sony FX6, which happens to be my go-to camera. As a creative filmmaker in Wisconsin who works solo, this video has been extremely helpful to me.
Nicely done! Very clean frames, and your van is tight. With those LEDs if you’re struggling for output you can put the reflector/fresnel on to get more stop, and then double break through a 4x4 and then a 6x6, 8x8, or 12x12 as your second layer.
GEEZ LOUIS That's a beautifully done set up! Looks so good it almost feels fake haha (like a green screen background) Awesome job! Awesome breakdown and channel! Thank you for the insight!
I’d love to see further explanation on your grip and gear and reasons why. I’d also be interested in how you price your services. I do understand that you cannot share a lot because it’s due to the type of job you’ll be at. All I’d like to know is do you have a standard pricing package? Or do you send out a quote based off of the job.
I will start working on the rest of the clips for the setup. So my grip van and lighting prices are transparent. $450 for 1 ton + $1 per mile + A la carte lighting. Grip or Gaffer can range from $400-$900.
@@davidmorefield This was a 1hr interview. Setup was 2hrs and load out was 1hr. I charged for the Van, the two lights, two FX6 packages and audio kit. I went a bit lower on my rate to fit the budget and knowing it was a four hour half day. The other person on the shoot was billed separately because he was also doing drone shots.
Please drop that video with the stands you have in the van! I'm looking at buying a Rivian pickup truck (R1T) for my company. The middle of the pickup truck has a hollow "trunk" that I could place my stands in. They call it a "gear tunnel." Very wild concept for a pickup.
On the tight shot from 4:00, there’s a distracting strobing/flickering on the far right window. It doesn’t make sense it’s a light because more than likely other lights would be flickering too. I wonder if there was a water hose outdoors spinning around watering an area or something…?
Finally someone with decent cable management. Would have loved to hear more about your thoughts behind the composition. But yeah overall nice set up. Was there a reasoning not using a fill light? For my taste it gives a more of a corporate look i guess.
I hate when I see a rats nest. I like shooting into corners and we had to avoid certain signage and equipment. This was the cleanest frame. I love to use bounce fill over a light. Just feels so natural to me eyes.
double check the skin tones when using daylight LED for a key. Color quality gets questionable for skin tone. Without a full spectrum color of light, you really risk skin tones and texture looking a bit muddled. LED's have trouble getting full spectrum in the reds and in the blue/violet wavelengths. This really makes an impact when you light with something with a fuller spectrum. I would have shot a 2k tungsten and gel it if you need blue. Adding CTB only adds color, does not take away from the light source. Im picky with faces.
Thanks for the vlog and the BTS of the shoots. Who is Clay Hayner, and does he know that you took his cart??? :) Would love to see you talk about the gear you use. Also interested in how you rigged up the F22c used for the hair light. I am assuming it is a combo stand. what's the boom arm and how is the end strapped to the base of the combo stand? Thanks in advance. Heck, you could make a "How To Boom Stuff" tutorial and I think a lot of people would really benefit from it. I've been so intimidated by booming (both lights and mics) that on my sets, no one gets a hair light and it's lav mics for everyone :(
I need to pull those stickers 🤣! I hope he knows his cart has some fame now! Great idea! That seems so simple to me, but others might not be aware of the way I do it. Thank you for the feedback and idea!
This looks nice but I have feeling and it makes me nervous that on the wide shoot he sits more to the right of center and it really makes me nervous looking at it.
@@PDMokry Thx for sharing. For some reason I though it's somethin between 24 and 35mm, but I should get a hint from the position of both cameras. They are kinda the same distance from the talent so focal length could not be that far apart :D. Anyway the results are very impressive. Is 50mm GM 1.2? :D
You my friend have a lot to say! I'm a noob just gettin' started, and grateful I found you! (just sub'd) [ I got here via Josh White, so thank him for me? ]
I appreciate it! I’m just paying it back, I started learning about photography here on YouRube back in 2006. Glad I can finally help others. Thanks to Josh for the support too!
@@PDMokry like I’m seriously impressed and need to take a more scientific artistic approach to image production like this pure talent man keep going deserves 100k views
beautiful lighting! seriously :) the wide I probably would have lowered a bit, I am generally not a fan of it being tilted down towards the talent and seeing so much of his body + the ground.
Not how soon you post after recording but I'd imagine its a few weeks. I've Been trying to find a decent sun umbrella for my cart. How's this one doing for you? Looks great
The interview was pretty quick, so I feel the cuts will not look too wild. When we were setting up, the light hitting the field was very minimal, but filled up once we started. So at that point is would not be jarring to the viewer.
I use the easyrig vario 5 with stabil G2. I recommend only using easyrig and not any off brand systems. They will end up hurting your back, breaking or damaging your camera.
4:34 _"oil absorbing wipes"_ What's the name of the product that you use? Also, do you ever use clear oil absorbing face power or do you always use wipes?
@@PDMokry that's a good point about needing multiple brushs. I just ordered some these and tested a wipe on my own face. It certainly works well! My only concern is that it could ruin or removing existing makeup. Is that something you've encountered when using these?
There are a few differences big. Inputs, LUTs, Waveform, False Color, Zebras, Overlays and a few more things. But you can have a big monitor that receives an output from a smaller one with all those features. The biggest issue is safe transport and it’s size.
this video is amazing, a lot of great tips ! i loved the way you used the umbrella, it's a life saver, especially in the hot weather we have here in brasil !
Hey man , I'm just starting learning cinematography and lighting and I don't know how I saw your video while searching for something else and it was just brilliant. You go in depth to explain how lighting works. I am watching all of your videos again and again. Keep it up
I really appreciate all the tips in this video. How high up do you send the Novas to simulate moonlight? Lighting night exteriors seems to be the most intimidating to me. Thanks.
Shots look great, can you talk a little bit about the difference between using the light dome versus just straight through your frame with diffusion? Is it just for additional softness, controlling spread instead of using barn doors, eliminating hot spots, softening shadows from the T-bone set up? Also, what would you have done differently with your key light if that 1200 D was not enough power? Thanks! Also, I have an Amaran F21x for hair lighting, which are you using in terms of diffusion for yours here?
I ended up using the magic cloth like diff in the f22c. It has a softer look. The dome allows for one less stand and helps control the spill. I can also change the diff or even add a grid if needed. If the output was not enough, I would have run the medium or narrow reflector and broke with a 40x40 frame of diff. That would cut hot spots and and I don’t ever feel I need the full diff filled with light, I always try to go bigger than needed. Thank you for watching!
13:01 YES PLEASE do go over your different stands and which you find more useful / transferrable to multiple or the most scenarios you regularly see. Super glad I found your channel!
killer frame! 2 questions: 1. do you have a video showing how you built out the van? 2. tire pressure - with that much load, how often do you do maintenance on the van in regards to tires? How much can it take and how often do you have to do upkeep?? Thanks for doing what you do!
Thank you!!! I will have one up in the near future. I am very lucky with the van I have. The NV2500 is pretty much a Nissan Titan Van. So the truck tires handle loads great. I have never had issues with pressure. All my services are with the dealer to maintain the factory warranty.
thanks for posting your setup, Am learning a lot, but but but, is having a van full of aputure lighting a flex? a few years Dps would laugh hysterically. :V :V :V I guess aputure has come a long way. Great job tho!
I get requests for Aputure lights over any other lights in my market. No flex on brand at all, just a flex of my offerings. I also remember the days of the cheaper Aputure lights.
@@PDMokry in the Chicago Area, were I do camera operator, best boy, PA some times gaffer, or anything. I really dont see a lot of Aputure. I also work with a lot of older crew, so I keep seeing your kino flo, arri, hives, Mole-Richardson, I guess Aputure is what kids used now in days hahahah. I do start to see some nanlite stuff tho. any how, keep up the good work!
Looks cool but background levels looked too hot for how lit he was in my opinion. Maybe you didn’t have enough juice to raise his levels, understandably.
We were maxed out on the output, but could have switched things up to get a bit more out of it. I am very pleased with the results, but respect your input. Thank you!
@@PDMokry I think it looks good taking a second look. Nice job. I think for me, psychologically it's a bit weird to have such bright highlights that suddenly stop right behind him but does add a lot of visual interest.
