Thanks for reviewing a G&L. I have the L2000 and absolutely love it even though the neck is chunkier than my Jazz bass. It can sound just about like most anything out there, single or double coil, active or passive. These G&L humbuckers are hot!

L1000 Wunkay owner/operator since 1981. I used it for straight Country of the time. With flatwounds, in OMG setting, bass pot on about 8, volume up or real close, hit a few notes and dial up the treble pot until it clanks a little in the room you're in, then dial it down just a little for solid bottom and nice top with no harsh. "Just the way I did it", Music Man HD 130 head with MM 1-15 folded horn cabinet, Gauss driver.

6:59 just realized they smoothed out the headstock...I always hated it too but it's not going to stop me from getting a vintage G&L Rampage or three on the tenor side - gotta get my Cantrell on.
@russellzauner

8:20 in my dim memories, I remember the few G&L basses I've touched feeling a lot nicer than pretty much every P bass I'd touched at that point - you've noticed the bonus that it's also fun to run. I am a passive leaning guy myself and let the sig chain and my tone/vol to the rest of the talking. So the separate treble/bass controls actually sort of moved G&L a couple dozen slots up the list in order of opportunistic acquisition.
@russellzauner

also now you know why Fender the Corporation never stopped trying to take down Fender the Man. :-) They lost, and lost *hard* lol to our benefit tbh

The versatility in sound is impressive but Leo was a genius so no surprises there. I normally am not a fan of the P Bass slap tone...but this one is smooth, rich and fat enough to change my mind. P bass on steroids? That is what I call my Musicman Sabre especially switching to the neck pickup. When I was in high school, I was able to borrow a G&L bass for a gig. I absolutely loved it. G & L basses are the most slept on basses out there, they should be played by more bassists. If the headstock is the only thing putting you off getting one then you need to get over that quickly. I own three G & L’s.....L-2500, L-2000 and a LB-100. My L-2500 is has been my workhorse for the last 20 years and my LB-100 has one of the best necks I’ve ever played.......probably the the best P basses out there in my opinion. Would love to get my hands on one of these CLF basses too, sounds amazing

The kiloton pickup is 1 coil closer to the bridge compared to a stingray. The stingray would be perceived as having the more appropriate slap tone (by a hair imo) but the Kilo can pull off the finger style /Jaco sound very well. I've tested the Kilo 5 with my amp rigs and holy smokes! It's a monster for sure. If anything, the Kilo is more akin to the Sterling.

Yo Lobsta!!! It’s me again - that Brooklyn A-hole living in Virginia... So I am definitely a G&L fanboy - slightly more so than an EBMM fanboy. I have a 1996 L2500 (1st year production version with original 4+1 headstock, my first 5-string) which I have purchased brand new - I actually traded a 1994 Stingray Fretless plus $250 for it in Spring of ‘97. It is an L2500 Custom model, which was around for only one or two years featuring an Alder body with book matched Ash top. Mine has a wonderful 4-piece Flame Maple neck. I’ve never seen another G&L like it. It came wired from the factory with Parallel and Series with Coil Tap (which is actually OMG), but not straight Series like the current models. I later added straight Series wiring, but don’t really like it - way too much nasal midrange. Anyway, the point of my ramblings is to bring to light what this OMG thing is... If you’re familiar with how a 4-lead humbucker is wired in Series (you should be after looking at the Sterling Ray24 Classic pickup), if you take those Red and White wires that are tapped off and touch them to ground, you cancel out that coil and have Split coil (basically Single Coil). Now OMG takes that same principle and adds a .1uF capacitor in between those leads and ground. The capacitor allows for high frequency cut off, just like a passive tone set up, while keeping the low end of that coil. So what you have is the bottom end of a Series-wired humbucker and the sweet top end of a Single Coil. You may experience some SC noise in OMG mode. I may just get rid of Series on my L2500 and just do Single Coil along with Parallel and OMG. In my opinion, the L1000 (and L2X) neck pickup in OMG will do the absolute best P-bass tone without being a P-bass. If I am correct, on the L1000, with the switch Up is Parallel, Middle is Split (single) Coil, down is OMG.

Forgot to mention...I actually like the current G&L headstock with the “can opener” point in it. I find it funny how Fender sued G&L for the old headstock, while the new headstock with pointy thing looks much more like a Fender headstock. In my opinion, the old headstock looks unrefined and sort of bland...as if it had a sock over the real one...The headstock on my ‘96 is huge and belligerent - I love it!

Would love to see a video comparing a G&L Tribute L2000 or Kiloton and a Ray34HH? Just curious how the fit and finish and overall build quality compare? The Ray34 and L2000 tribute are both in that same price range, just curious what's the best bang for your buck!

Best sounding bass l ever owned was a G&L l hated the way it looked but it made my bad playing sound better, no string buzz I'm playing chords with just beautiful, I was having some money problems and I sold it to my friend and told him I was going to buy it back and before I could get it back yet already sold it one of the biggest mistakes of my life

@LowEndLobster

Thank you! I think most 4 stringers hover around 18-19mm spacing. That's where I'm comfy personally. I think the Ibanez BTB 4 string used to have 20mm spacing too (and 35" scale).

There's no split coil mode. You've got parallel, single coil and OMG (basically series but with 0.1μf capacitor across one of the pickup coils, drastically cutting the high frequencies).

Well Lobster , I bought the Ray 34 , seems to be a better pickup and preamp then the Ray 4 or Ray 24. . My G&L 2000 is active surprised that your L1000 is not.
@LowEndLobster
@LowEndLobster 3 года назад
@@michaelblaney4461 Awesome! Indeed, the Ray34 (especially on sale) is a tremendous value compared to the Ray24 - which IMO occupies a really weird spot. Yeah the circuit on the L1000 is a weird one, basically a separate bass and treble cut, like two separate tone knobs. Then he went active with the 2000. I need to do more research into the G&L history.
