A beautiful and rarely heard Christmas cantata for bass solo. Apart from the fact that Telemann cantatas are generally neglected, this one is vocally quite demanding and requires an excellent technique to handle the firework of coloraturas in the first aria.
The paintings used in the clip are:
Portrait of G. Ph. Telemann, aquatint based on a painting by Ludwig Michael Schneider
Louis Licherie de Beurie, Annunciation to the Shepherds
Views of the Isenheim Altar by Matthias Grunewald

A note to sticklers for historically informed performance: before you look down your nose at the pre-HIP style of this recording, remember that it dates from a not-so-dim past when performers of Baroque music were expected to express with their own means the feelings which they felt the music wanted to convey, rather than step politely aside and let the composer do all the explaining. That was the task of Karl Ristenpart and his team here, and they more than accomplished it. In fact, I can hardly imagine a better welcome for the Baby Jesus on earth than the warm, glowing humanity of Barry McDaniel's voice.
I hope you will enjoy this recording.
