Really enjoyed this - perfect with a Saturday morning mug of coffee. Im slightly embarrassed to say (although only slightly) I've got 5 gshocks now, mostly picked up used from ebay, and have had a couple open to change batteries. The debris that fell out of one of them was enough to plant a small plant, but under the real caseback it was mint - amazing really. Thanks.

I'm a watch and clockmaker. I've owned my G-Shock since 1989. Only had to replace the battery once. It's now on year 9 of battery number 2. I even done a video of me throwing it at a pebble dashed wall and 50ft in the air to prove how tough it is. It'll outlast me.

Just a tip for most analog-digital G-Shocks, press and hold the set button (top-left) for 5 seconds until it enters the hand adjust option. This allows you to “zero” the analog hands so they correspond with the correct digital time. Press the mode button (Bottom-left) to switch between the main hands and sub dial. Use the right buttons to move the hands position to get them back to zero. Press the adjust button (top-left) to exit this mode. This should be done every time there is a battery change, or if for whatever reason the hands don’t match.
@richardperrettwatchmaker
@richardperrettwatchmaker 2 года назад
Hi Neal... Thanks for this. I actually misaligned the hands a little ( in relation to one another) so I went back in and sorted that out. Then i read the manual and used the facility you describe to sync the hands with the digital read out. It worked very well. Good tip. Thanks so much l. Richard

Most higher end Casios have a "touch movement". This is Casio-speak for actuators on the hand motors that let the watch know their exact location. This is why they need to be adjusted after a battery change. Also the buttons on G-shocks have dual gaskets instead of the more normal single gaskets, which makes water ingress unlikely. This also means the buttons are large.

Well done, Richard! In this episode, you have satisfied my undying curiosity of G-Shock watches. It has always fascinated me on the inner workings of these iconic watches. Once the watch was reassembled, and I witnessed the functions as the mode control was manipulated, I now realize the necessity for two batteries. This was quite enjoyable, and educational at once. Richard, when I first saw you doing this I was like "Why is he servicing a g-shock?" Then i saw the crud that had worked its way inside. So while a digital doesn't need to be serviced in the same way a mechanical watch does, it still needs to be cleaned occasionally. Bang on video, mate!

Have a look at the Chinese pressure testers. They are about a tenth of the price of the Swiss made ones and do precisely the same job of testing to 3 atmospheres (the swiss standard). That's all most testing is done to, unless it's for industrial purposes (like actual deep dive equipment, which is extremely rare). It's a pretty safe test. The watch sits on hanger in the tank above the 300ml of water which you put in there. You then pressurise the cylinder to 3 atmospheres (most dials go to 6 max but there's really no need). After about a minute you then lower the watch into the water and slowly let the air out. A leak is indicated by a significant stream of air bubbles coming from the watch. A little coming out around the bezel is normal.
@ianjamieson3985

@Chrisamic
@Chrisamic Год назад
@@ianjamieson3985 I got mine from Ebay, AU$270 including shipping, and I've been using it about a year so far. It's one of those things you use occasionally, but no other tool can replace it. I charge $20 additional for pressure testing (clients choice) so it has probably paid for itself a few times. I think all the seals and 0-rings are standard parts so it is probably serviceable if it ever needs it. At that price it's easy to justify the purchase.

33:23 actually you can do the disc adjustment with buttons combination (I forgot which buttons, but it's in the manual) Because the disc will slightly misaligned sometime if you drop or bump the watch (it's outdoor watch, so that to be expected) It's good that Casio provide a solution to aligned the disc (and the hands too) without having the user to open the case, they know we will abuse the G-Shock

I used to scuba dive. After you've been to the beach it's extremely important to wash everything made of metal in fresh water to remove all traces of salt. In this case where it has a plastic over shield, leave it soak for half an hour with occasional agitation. I would have been tempted to use a little rust converter on the rust stains. About 5% phosphoric acid for about half an hour. You can buy 85% food grade phosphoric acid and dilute 1:16 with a little distilled water. It does tend to leave bare steel with a blue/black patina (iron phosphate) but doesn't touch coatings (your mileage may vary). The bare steel can then be retouched with a little enamel paint or recoated to prevent further corrosion.

I worked in the security industry and wore a G-Shock all that period. It was great as it took the knocks of hard everyday outdoor wear. Any other watch would have shown the scars of commensurate environmentalist age but not so the G-Shock. Fantastic to see the level of miniaturization that casio achieved on electromechanical parts. Just some comments, The Spring on back is to make contact with the piezoelectric speaker attached on inner face of back metal plate. All g-shocks have same approach to electric ans mechanic connect the speaker. After the change batteries it is also necessary to enter on hands alignment procedure as described in owner's manual.

Lot of fun watching this. I've changed the batteries in my G a couple of times, but never went that deep into it. One thing, at the end when you are trying to get the mode wheels and hands properly linked... in the Casio manuals for the specific module (available for download), there is a step by step procedure to get everything properly aligned without physically working with the hands. It's different for every module, but anyone can resync without even opening the watch.

On most G-SHOCKs those springs go flying when you take the metal backplate off. Most are a connection to a speaker on the backplate for the alarm and button push sounds. If you lose one a truck is to find the correct size lug bars (shock absorber looking things). Pull them apart and get the spring out of them. Cut the correct size length off and replace into the hole it came out of.. Put your backplate back on and voila. Your alarm and button sounds work again. They won't be brass but they still conduct electricity and work just as well.

Great video Richard,, I damaged my gshock that I wore for work, years ago, just trying to change the battery,, ha ha,,, so my recent purchase, is a solar Gsteel, which hopefully, I'll never have to open up, with my clumsy sausage fingers,,, lol.. Interesting that the screws on the bezel are "dummies"... All the best,,, John..

Solar GSteel is such a good choice! I am a little envious of that and yes it should just go and go for years. I was a bit supprised about the bezel design too it is super quick to put on I guess so makes sense for CASIO in production terms. I expect the MRG designs is more traditional! Richard

For ten years I’ve worn (mostly) a solar radio-sync Citizen and… went through five leather straps before buying a cheap steel bracelet. Maybe the capacitor will die someday. Now I own a few more watches and perhaps someday I’ll ruin one trying to change a silver oxide or lithium cell…

Wow so much patience and Skill. There’s something about you folks working on Watches, all those tiny Springs were making me nervous lol. Can you open up and clean a Gravitymaster GPW-2000. I liked how you gave the Coordinates of the beach at the end lol.

"My G-Shock is going to smell so good ". 😂😂 Reminds me of your un- boxing of the Invictor pro-diver when you "sniffed" the box . Great video as always Richard. By chance I was in Pembrokeshire last weekend visiting MHCG & one of the coastguards on duty was wearing the exact same watch ! I'm now looking to ad this one to my growing collection of Casio watches, my first being the vintage classic A203 Blue Thunder received as a present in 1980 which is still going strong ! Looking forward to your next video.

Hi Simon ... Comforting to know that the folks at Milford Haven Coast Guard are discerning about their watches! The Coast Guard and RNLI are important folks and always pretty busy down here. 'Gingers' is the place a nice coffee and cake in Milford ... I find myself in there quite a lot! Richard

Very interesting. You should open some other tough quartz watches and compare it to g-shock, e.g. Citizen Ecozilla, yp2000... , Seiko Arnie....

I've never seen such an immaculate workshop even his tools are colour coded! You should see mine Richard (or best you don't) and I'm not a watchmaker like yourself who I hold tremendous respect for after having a go myself at repairing a vintage watch (how hard can it be, right?) and having springs flying out everywhere and a bag of 30+ parts for my trouble. To me as someone who has designed and built computers and written software, watchmaking repairs is akin to performing open surgery on a living patient. It's that hard and technical, you need very very steady hands and astonishing skills. I really enjoyed the story of the watch and seeing the repair process anyway. I'd be exactly the same if I was Rolex to be fair, a big brand of extremely high value with a reputation to protect you stay well clear of products which have been fitted with non-Rolex parts . So that makes Richard BETTER than Rolex for still taking on the task! I did wonder if the watch might be haunted or something paranormal going on, a watch running so fast losing 4 hours a day is quite bizarrel.....alien abduction of previous wearer?! lol I have some watches and clocks over 100 years old still keeping good time if regularly wound up properly that have never been serviced in decades.

When you restarted the watch it went to alignment mode. When it was flashing "sub" it actually meant that you could then align the sub dial to the proper position and pressing mode button once would take you to main dial which said "0:00", which meant that you at that point can align the hour minute hands. No need to open the watch and align those dials manually. Sorry that my explanation is not perfect but you could look at other videos on how to align gshock dials, you'll then get a clearer idea.
