Correction. The USB-C port does not allow the connection of an external drive, it does not act as a hub. The connection is there to connect to a USB-C gen2 port on a computer that does not have the faster Thunderbolt 3 connections.

Geekanoids hi thanks for the video, so this can connect via usb3.1 to a computer ? If so, what is the speed test result - you wouldn't happen to know would you? :) I assume it should be the same as it's limited by the drive speed.

Thank you for showing us this Dave. I wasn't expecting 400 MBPS. I have only seen 3 or more HDD in RAID exceed that speed. But as a traveling and editing RAID I would still pick this up.

I am impressed, everything about this seems so easy and user friendly. The noise level, well what noise LOL, the only thing that I can say that would make this better is to have a removable screen/filter for the fan so dust is removed or reduced. Great video Dave.

Thank you + quick comparison to the Lacie BigDock. It's meant to write at 500 gb/s according to the box so the 360 you are recording is significantly lower. Now try and configure it for RAID 1 mirroring, most people I assume would buy it to mirror as that's RAIDs principle selling point. There's no direct information on or in the box how to, the G-Tech forum is confusing and when you do get it to work by finding the correct software (G-RAID with Thunderbolt Configurator, you need to make sure the software is exactly the same as the product, there are different types of G-RAID) there's no way of checking the information is on the second disk. I don't doubt it's a very solid bit of kit but the Lacie Big Dock has much better communication and software (it advertises a lower transfer rate of 440 gbs though and does not feel as solid, I'm not sure which has the higher quality internal drives I'm guessing the G-Drive does). I'm going to continue trying to make this work correctly in RAID 1 but I'm losing hope and thinking of returning it which is a shame because all my drives for the last decade have been G-Drives. NOTE - do not try and check the data is on both drives by removing one, if you do you'll have to reconfigure it using the above-mentioned app, it takes forever.

My new 8TB G-RAID makes an insane amount of electronic noise from both the unit and the power supply. It is a high frequency whining noise that alters in pitch. It is worse when the unit is on (disks spinning) but it also does it to a lesser extent when the disks have spun down. Can you put your ear up to your G-RAID and tell me if yours does the same? Thanks.

I have one of these units, 8TB as RAID 0 its as noisy as hell. Yes it's quiet when the heads are parked (which is rare when it's in use.) In fact on your video i can hear the heads calibrate as the disks spin. A you say, the fan noise is almost silent, it's the drives in the enclosure that chatter like crazy. I've never experienced a drive or RAID this noisy. I've complained to G-Tech but have heard nothing back. I don't think I'm alone on this matter.

I love that PowerMac G5 / MacPro Tower Cheese greater design. I personally don’t need much space. I have an external 1 terabyte drive, and a smaller 500 gigabyte drive for more important files. And I use 3 internal drives in my pc (I wish I had a Mac, at least not a 2007 MacBook.) I have a complicated setup and I need to simplify that setup. But if I was using TB3, I would get that because I do like that drive

Hi Dave. I watched your video with interest, but having now bought this machine I came back to check some information. You say you can''t daisy-chain from the USBC port, and then claim you're looking forward to being able to 'connect a USBC hard drive to make regular back-ups'. This didn't ring true. As I was writing to you to check what you meant, I saw your PINNED correction below. 22,092 people have seen your video, but I for one rarely look at comments. So with the greatest of respect, a 'pinned correction' lost down the post doesn't really help those who might be confused or - having bought the machine - disappointed. Once it's said, it's said, so if you're going to make these videos, there's a very good case for double-checking facts I would say. And for any new viewers, maybe add a caption to the video or even remove and amend it? Also, Lenny and Sandi ask if this machine can be configured to RAID 1. You weren't sure. I hope by now they've discovered you certainly can configure to RAID 1 - in fact some would argue it's the main asset of a device such as this - something you don't touch on. Indeed, if you personally want to make regular back-ups having failed with the USBC idea, I would suggest RAID 1 is your best way of doing it - you don't have to plug anything in or do anything at all! Sorry to leave a negative comment about your professional, well-presented and believable review. But that's the point. It's believable, but some information is untrue and this is the second video about this unit which is very misleading. I do think RU-vid reviewers should be 100% sure of facts and take effective ownership of errors once the video is posted. Best wishes Simon
