The funny thing is that Vai and Satch look like they're utterly COMMITTED and pulling every trick they have out of the bag, while Guthrie is like "Haha this is fun!"
It's because they have way more licks than Govan. It's called experience. As Jimi would say, Are you experienced? Govan is fantastic but he lacks one thing compared to the other two. Time
When you kids will understand that music isn't a competition? Its not olymphics or so... I think that is one of the most fun jams of G3 history... All the dudes nailed it...
very well said, music is life, why try making everything a competition. who cares who better. stop listen and watch, the most exciting part is the fun the musicians are having.
So true .. this is not a boxing match guys .. even in boxing no one can agree on who is greater .. Ali or Foreman or Frazier or Tyson or Marciano .. all have their supporters. : - ) Just sit back and enjoy ..
Exactly!!! it's just awesome to watch 3 completely different styles come together for a great jam - it's the quirky musical expression from all of them that is fascinating to hear.
Joe always enjoy the show and appreciate his colleagues when they do something fun. He thinks no way being better than anyone, he just want to play music!
Someone in the comments inevitably: “C’mon guys...music isn’t a competition!” The three guitarists: Incessantly soloing trying to outdo one another. Guitar players themselves make it a competition. They’re by far the most competitive instrumentalists on the planet.
That was probably one of the best jams in the history of guitar music. So much respect in that stage!!! This was the most mature G3. Guthrie is super respectful and incredibly talented, Satch remains as wise as always and Steve's ego has aged well.
after all the music tribute given for decades by joe nd vai. people are comparing them with him. is this what they want from us?. come on they are guitar gods. we should not forget their history. love from nepal.
Imagine having the time of your life with two of the most versatile guitar players alive, while wearing a guitar strap including your McDonalds name tag you were given at work at minimum wage... one hell of an achievement!
So much talk about who is the best. These three dudes inspire me to keep on my guitar journey every day. None are better than the other( although I did end up buying guthries signature Charvel). They are all masters in their own right. I've met each and they all exude humility and grace. Also, lets not forget about the band. Minnemann, Keneally and Beller.
What's particularly special about this is that Joe taught Steve, and Steve was Govan's biggest influence, so they're passing the baton between them in more ways than one here.
where did you hear that vai is Guthrie's biggest influence? I think I've seen every interview he's ever done and I cant recall him ever saying that. I'd love to see one that I missed though if it exists.

Great G3 tour, my favorite top 3 guitarists, plus Paco an Al dimeola
God damn Guthrie plays amazing things even so subtle! Listen from 4:59-5:03 after Steve Vai plays the Stairway to Heaven riff, Guthrie follows by playing the melody of the lyrics “and she’s buying the stairway to heaven.” Freaking awesome!
You might want to go back and check what you put in at the 4:59-5:03 mark, because there is non Stairway to heaven riff and Guthrie doesn't play any melody of Stairway to Heaven.
of course it's not a competition, but it seems Vai and Satch found someone in the same level or more... it seems it was too hard to jam with him. govan was much more inspired and confident.. just flowing. It's not a competition, but there is always the concern of not sound bad.. Anyway, they are all great masters!
6:08 Satch was like: "Oh man! It's insane...! 6:29 "Oh my God...GG,,not again!" 6:33 "Vai,,still have any other tricks?"....Vai: "Ok, dont worry, I got this..." hahaha LOL!
Vai can not accpet the truth that govan has dethroned his sovereignty..i love joe, he just showed sportsmanship..the only thing joe has forgotten to teach vai, is the good manner
Andrew Watt I think it's all in good fun, though. Joe seems to be the kind of guitarist who hones little ideas into something more over time in the studio, rather than produce instant "where'd that come from" brilliance like the likes of Guthrie.
If Mike is a grunge guitarist, then there is a good reason why he wouldn't participate fully. He can't keep up with real guitarist like Vai and Satriani
@@Maschine_Elf Being on par. like in golf, isn't going to win the match, nor will it put Mike on the same level as Vai, Satch, Eddie Van Halen or any other non grunge guitarist. Grunge just doesn't have shredding type guitarist or those that can make the guitar talk and be melodic. Grunge is more about changing the tunning of the guitar to sound different and not worried about being great musicians.
Wow Tree Of Master Melody Guitars Presented Music Song Melody Guitars Very Very Cool They're All Good World Class Players, ..... God Bless All, ...... Cherrio.🌠👍🎼🎸🎼🌠👍👍👍🌠.
Music isn't a competition, but when we're talking about technical skills, then yes, Guthrie is wayyy more skilful. And hence he destroys them, based on technical skills.
Well , satriani is 60 whereas gunthrie is till young. nevermind the fact that Gunthries really owes his great style in these guys too. You should not compare guitar playing like this. without wanna sound offensive this is not a dick measuring competition. it s a concert. Gunthrie should be in g3 and this is a good publicity for him, sure he is known to the elitist guitar world but the average guitar player does not know him unlike Vai and Satriani.
+Mirza Sutresno Yes Guthrie is the best in the world (IMO). But Vai and Stach have mean, mean chops too. And, all said and done, technique is just the WAY you play the guitar. In that respect and Satch and Vai have very recognisable chops that combine with their awesome compositional skills, and that is half the battle. Also remember that chops is not just playing fast, and Satch is probably the most emotional melodic soloist I've ever heard. Always with Me Always with You, Flyin in a Blue Dream, Summer Song etc. etc. His tone and touch are without parallel. There's a good reason he's shifted 10 million+ instrumental guitar records!
Music is supposed to be fun. You PLAY music. Please stop writing lame comments about competition between these wonderful artists. In this world where much has become about competition and ‘success’, leave these hard working musicians alone.
3:52 steve vai is such a great guitarist, he can find time between a shred war with these greats, and goes to to his amp to further dial in the tone! great video, three of the absolutely best guitarists in the world!
