When my husband was a cancer patient, people would comment about all the “good” drugs he was getting. He would reply, “I don’t take these drugs to get high, I take them to feel normal.” I’m on gabapentin. It’s the miracle that lets me sleep without pain.

@@kym1988 I think it might help with back pain because its works differently than some other pain killers. It works for nerve pain which is why it helped my broken ankle pain. If you have nerve pain it tends to not respond to regular pain killers in my experience

I’m going out on a limb here but I use to abuse this medication. I was up to 6000 mg a day and I almost died because it finally gave me a grand mall seizure. This medication should not be prescribed to anyone taking pain killers. I’ve been clean for 11 years and this was my drug of choice. It is now a narcotic in Michigan and it’s just a rotten drug. Get help because this drug will kill you faster than any other drug besides fentanyl. I’m just being honest so others will no the risks with this drug. It gave me a cocaine buzz !

Chronic pain patients don’t take their meds for “euphoria” , we take them for a little relief and so we can function . Addicts are when you use drugs to continue to chase the euphoric feeling. That’s the huge difference. I had a severe reaction to Gabapentin within 48 hrs of starting it. I have been on opioids for 10 years and never have I had issues . Most chronic pain pts take our meds as prescribed and are very safe. Addicts are not. I wish people would stop putting both in the same category. We are not the same as an addict. Not at all. Edit: I am writing this edit in because many people cannot differentiate between physical dependence and addiction. Anyone on long term opiates will have a physical dependence on the medication and should be tapered off to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Physical/chemical dependence is NOT the same as the diagnosis/disease of addiction. Please just stop.

I'm an x pain pill addict and I suffered from migraines and neck pain most of my life. I had my first migraine as a child and had to get Botox injections for the migraines which were a saving grace, but pain pills were also my enemy. I had an MRI in 2016 and they found a cyst in my brain which probably aided in my seizures, headaches, tics from tourettes and pain. I had moved to live with my aunt and uncle and they didn't care if I had headaches because what they did see is what I wouldn't see. They saw me depending and took them away. I was enraged and in fear of the pain I didn't want to go through, I was so addicted and in fear I felt like a person angry in the show "intervention " but I had to talk myself into the next part of not having pain med's anymore. They were the only thing that worked and I wasn't willing to be in pain or try but I had to. I've been off pain meds for six years and only now can I see how I revolved my life around them just to be pain free. I take Tylenol with caffeine and tell myself that's all I'm going to get and it was mind over matter. I didn't have a life with the headaches and I didn't have a life with the pain pills, it was a lose lose! When I get headaches they are debilitating but it was an addiction and my head might have been looking to have pain just to have them. It's an addiction no matter if the pain is real or not (in my situation)

Our little dachshund was diagnosed with epilepsy 7 years ago. The vet gave her Keppra twice a day. While it did reduce the amounts of siezers, it didn't stop them . We also noticed that while she had fewer siezers ,when she did have one, it was far worse of a siezer. To the point, sometimes we thought she actually died several times. She hurt her back one night, and our vet was closed, so we took her to a vet emergency clinic. That vet gave her 100mg of gabapentin twice a day for two weeks. Well, we noticed that she didn't have any siezers for the whole two weeks. We talked to the emergency vet, and he agreed to take over her care, and he continued the gabapentin care. That was a little over a year ago, and our precious little dachshund hasn't had any more siezers since. Another note I'd like to add is this....I've been on opiates for 6 years now for chronic inoperable back pain. Because of the government, doctors like this and drug abusers I'm forced to have to go to a clinic and sit next to actual heroin addicts and other drug abusers. I have to go thru urine and blood tests and basically beg every month for a prescription! Meanwhile, an actual drug abuser can walk in off the street and be given free of charge massive amounts or methadone or suboxin without question. I don't get high off of my opiates and I never take more than prescribed ever! I might also add that if I wanted to get "high" I would just drink a beer! I certainly wouldn't go thru the B.S. I'm forced to go through because of drug abusers ! Dr's like this have zero empathy for chronic pain patients and are weirdly more concerned with someone getting high! It's makes zero sense!

Took it for a year- year and a half. Helped the nurralgia, but I gained 50 pounds and became a scatter brain. Then I just so happened to be in a conversation with a guy who spontaneously mentioned he was prescribed Gabapentin for psychological reasons. I immediately weaned myself off it and never looked back. Still have the neuralgia, but now I’m overweight and am a scatter brain. I should mention my prescription was 300mg 3x a day. I never took that. I only took it twice daily. I wonder would I be 25 lbs heavier, or 50% loopier had I taken the full prescription? My advice: stay away from meds unless you’ve literally tried everything else twice, and it is absolutely necessary.

I was put back on Gabapentin after a second car accident. High dose for CRPS, a chronic nerve pain condition that is hard to treat. For me, it was a miracle drug for pain the first time around. The second time, I had an extreme reaction to it. My face and the bottom of my feet turned bright red, I could put my finger under the skin on my face and peel my own skin off. It looked like I had a terrible sunburn. The bottom of my feet had small blister-like bumps, including bright red, and peeling off, very painful!! My Physician told me I wasn't the only one who came back at him with these "side effects." He had never had these reports with Gabapentin years ago; he had felt that perhaps the Pharmaceutical company had changed the way they formulated Gabapentin and had not reported it.

For years used to take enough hydromorphone for my chronic pain to kill about 9 naive patients a day, this was after years of morphine sulfate, and a specific VA study that came out that determined that hydromorphone was the least likely to be addictive. For 20 years, I never experienced euphoria from any drug prescribed to me for pain. I never had an addiction or dependency issue. I was highly tolerant, and did have a constipation issue. It seems I have been highly tolerant for lots of drugs, including CNS Depressants like Valium, which a plastic surgeon had to put me on the max dose of at 17 to keep my muscles from tearing apart some tendons he had to repair in my foot. His chasing the tendons several times after his stitches pulled apart was not pleasant. Yes, I was awake. Along the road of chronic pain I have had all the blockers, pregabalin, and gabapentin, while I was taking "deadly" doses of dilaudid. Guess what, they aren't safe. They aren't safe for anyone else if I am taking them. Gabapentin, in particular, makes me angry. When I say angry, I mean that I literally feel as if killing annoying people might make me feel better, and everyone is annoying. After the War on Pain Patients started, some bright spark in the VA decided that with the couple of decades of opioids I had taken, I surely would do better with a different, synthetic opioid to deal with my chronic pain because it was also the "go to" for addiction, and obviously tolerance could be addiction, and everyone is going to die because everyone is addicted, and someone had problems with her pain getting worse because of opioids. So, titrate off hydromorphone, and on to methadone! Monday... Guess what? Methadone was nearly instantly like wrapping my brain in a fuzzy blanket, and the red eyes make me look like a junkie. Wednesday... And the constipation was 4x as bad. Like rock hard concrete block bad... Thursday... I do not like this feeling, I can't function, and I do not want to take anymore Methadone. "But we can't change your meds up this quick, finish the titration off and on and see what happens..." Friday... I will just stop taking both. Monday... "You can't just stop taking all that hydromorphone and methadone! You'll die from withdrawal!" Nope. I didn't even twitch. "What?" I already quit taking them, because the methadone is intolerable for me. "You can't do that!" I already did. "When they wear off you're going to have severe withdrawal. You have to be under observation for a while..." 12 hours into direct observation by nurse... yawn. "Oooh. That could be a symptom of withdrawal." Yeah, sure, or it could be a symptom of my usual lack of sleep because of chronic pain. And when I scratch my elbow in a few minutes because the armrest on this chair I have been sitting in for hours is leaving an impression, that won't be a symptom of anything either. 6 years now without any relief from my chronic pain. If you are going to push a narrative that makes it sound like "everyone" is dependent... I am going to say "fuck you ignorant asshole."
@sweetmissypetuniawilson9206
I'm assuming you're over your constipation at this point. But ffr if given any drug that may constipate, taking magnesium could help! But you can't just take one & expect a miracle, they should be taken daily. Even if you're not on meds, listen now & thank me later!

Much more focus should be put on helping people use PT via gyms in addition to the medicines. Unfortunately, all this abuse of pain medicine is only hurting the people who truly have pain.

I'm not addicted to Gabapentin because I've never tried to get any sort of high or euphoria from it and I take it as prescribed, but I'm definitely physically dependant on it in that if I run out or there's a delay in getting my prescription I get horrendous withdrawal: sweating, tremors, anxiety, anxiety attacks, agitation and I even get frequent, long (often several minutes) absence seizures from withdrawal even though I'm on it for diabetic nerve pain, NOT epilepsy. But at the same time it massively improves the pain in my legs and allows me to function whereas before the gabapentin I'd have days so bad that I needed a wheelchair. So I definitely see both sides.

This was prescribed to me by my pulmonologist. Turns out Gabapentin has become a Must Have for my hot flashes (post-menopause). I didn't realize how effective it was when I ran out. That weekend, my hot flashes flared up so bad i almost went to the emergency room. The hot flashes were literally coming every 3 minutes or less. Some were mild, but most were so bad my anxiety levels were off the charts, every time I tried to doze off a fire or volcano would erupt inside me causing severe stress, a fan blowing on me at high speed constantly, wet towels i was trying everything. I couldn't figure out what was happening....then when I picked up my Rx for gaba....the world became bearable, i could sleep, i could actually function. Lord, what would i do without out it....

I would fly into uncontrollable rages or hysterical tears over nothing. My husband took me home, I had withdrawal symptoms, again I had only taken it for a week, but I went off it cold turkey. It was so bad, that a doctor prescribed it for my husband about two years later, and when he realized what it was, he never filled the script.

They put me on gabapentin for severe pain. It was the WORST experience I've ever had with a medication. I didn't abuse it, matter of fact, I UNDERUSED it because I didn't like the way it made me feel. When I finally got up to the full recommended dosage, I blacked out, walked to a bar where my friend worked, at 2 am through a dangerous area and next to a FREEWAY, then woke up in a full bathtub. I had 2 elderly friends that were subscribed gabapentin, and both fell, sustained injuries, and had to be hospitalized. Neither of them even took their full recommended dose. I don't see the benefit of that drug. It should be taken off the market. I was so anxious I didn't know what to do. Tried to tell my doctor and he just minimized it and up the dosage What would have helped is an valium or xanax type product to bring me out of that horrible place I was so shaky and paranoid and sick. This happened while on gabapentin. I don't know if I was Missed dosed but it took weeks to feel better. When I was at my worst I went to see a doctor and they said I was suffering from acute anxiety and depression. I've been through a bad breakup and I'm sure I would have been hurting anyway but it was beyond anything I've ever felt. Because of gabapentin I do know what crazy looks and feels like. This happened to me as well after several years of use. I took myself off of it. It wasn't great but it wasn't nearly difficult as stopping opiates. I started tapering it off monthly and realistically got off of it. I was on 900mg 3x day. Took me 6 months to fully get off. For 2 months after I completely stopped I felt "on edge" and kind of irritable..but, again, nothing like opiates. It was uncomfortable but doable. I've since had total dental replacements and the pain I used gabapentin for is managed honestly with ibuprofen and/or Tylenol. It works and has can provide tremendous relief however, for me the side effects were more worrisome than the benefits I was seeing. I did gain 60lb in 5 months after starting it and am still working on getting that off. It also is considered a "mood stabilizer" and I did see that first 2 months after stopping the effects of that..i.e. uncomfortable and on edge. That's my personal experience and what I did to get off. I wish you the best of luck. I know it is difficult to stop gabapentin for many but it was one of the est decisions I made for myself.

Sadly, I recognize that there are a lot of people who want to get high…..chronic pain patients are NOT among them and sadly, when especially CRPS patients got their meds cut way back, many committed suicide, to include my best friend. The CDC blamed the opiate crisis on the wrong people--just as criminals will always find a way to obtain guns, street addicts will always obtain drugs. The CDC has realized the error of its ways to some degree, but it has left pain management doctors feeling gun shy and has taken the decision for care out of their hands. I belong to numerous CRPS groups and sooo many committed suicide, it’s unconscionable.

Hi Andrew. Tom Viola explains in the beginning that there's not much awareness about the negative aspects of this drug, unlike, for example, opioids. That's what makes it dangerous. You may not agree, but they make it clear in the video intro.

I have suffered with sciatica for years. I was put on Lyrica for a period of time when I couldn't take nsaids. I have tried to come off it many times, each time with horrific withdrawal problems. Thankfully, it's a very low dose. I feel like I am stuck with it the rest of my life. It helps and I have never felt high from taking it. Just know it can be very difficult to come off of!

When you're taking strong medications like gabapentin and oxycodone you are the one responsible to take these drugs correctly. I've been on both for years I have refused increases. This is due to spine injury from the neck down to the lumbar spine. I have stage 4 cancer now and have refused an increase in the dosage. I know full well there may come a time where I do need it and I want it to work. I get enough relief although not total that I can function. I watched a woman who was a roommate my last hospital stay a couple weeks ago screaming for pain meds every 15 minutes. Totally addicted and didn't care. She made a comment what you're on is nothing. My reply was and that's the way I want it. Just to shut her up they sent her home on fentanyl. You have to take the bare minimum of any drug. If you don't you're going to end up just like she is unable to function. It is your body therefore your choice on what you're going to do to it.

This hits home for me. My daughter Nicole (33 yrs old) was diagnosed with depression, borderline personality disorder, Bipolar & had chronic pain. She was prescribed medicine for her mental health issues and Gabapentin for her pain. She was abusing the Gabapentin I think to get high or perhaps to get sleep because she had trouble sleeping. On October 3, 2021 my son and I found her lifeless body in her apartment she had taken her own life .The cause of death was Gabapentin Intoxication. Gabapentin may help some people with their pain, and I am truly happy for them that they are getting relief. I sympathize with people who have to live with chronic pain because I too have been living with chronic pain for over 20 years. But Gabapentin will always be the thing that took my daughter from her family and friends that love her dearly.

Gabapentin is very addictive! My daughter’s doctor put her on it and when she told me how much her doctor had her on I flipped out! She became so addicted. She also died at home and my grandson had to call 911 to save her life. Thankfully they revived her. I began to talk to her about getting off of it. She asked her doctor for help. She is off it, but she is struggling in every way. 😢

First off. Dr. Viola, you're a dentist - by my own admission, I take massive amounts of Gabapentin for some mysterious neuropathy developed seven years ago - there are definite side effects - weight gain, water retention, and dare I say it, for men, ejaculation is NOT happening, guys. But I think your comment about long-term use increasing the likelihood of a seizure is misguided and ill-informed. - And I speak from my own experience. I would suggest, respectfully,. that you stick to your dental bailiwick - and avoid speciously and abjectly incorrect comments - tell me about dental implants, and that sort of thing.

People who truly have chronic pain do not experience a euphoric effect taking a prescribed amount of pain medication or even gabapentin..they are in to much pain to feel much of anything.

The side effects from gabapentin can be SEVERE! Took it for ten years as a preventive for headaches (leftovers from encephalitis) not one doctor told me that everything else I started to suffering from was a side effect of the gabapentin. I ended up on IMMUNOSUPPRESANTS (they all have black box warnings), for an undefined autoimmune. Now I am off all meds and am much happier and productive, with no signs of psoriasis, that was the last one they changed my diagnosis too.

I had all my opioids taken from me. I have a medical history as long as my arm. I had to withdraw from Methadone and Oxycodone all by myself. It took 3 months and was horrible. I was given Gabapentin 3600mg a day and it helped a little with my neuropathy, but did nothing for my spinal stenosis, sciatica etc.. Gabapentin made me feel off kilter all the time. I was always falling, which broke my wrist and my Ballance was completely gone. I finally found a doctor who's not afraid to give a Rx for an opioid. She got me down to 1800mg of Gabapentin and 40mg of Vicodin QD. I'm still in pain, but it's not so severe...I can Walk again with out falling thank GOD. I do want to thank you for mentioning arrythmias. When I was on that high dose of Gabapentin I had heart palpitations all day long, since I've gone down, palpitations are gone.

You gotta be kidding me... I've been on Gabapentin for 5 yrs and have NEVER had a euphoric effect like an opoid & I take 1200 mg 3 times a day - which is a lot, right? Had an accident and while in the hospital the Dr's there thought I was on too high a dose and lowered me to 300 mg 3 times a day and made my life a living hell like existence because of my severe nerve pain being inadequately treated. And from day one of taking it - never any euphoria. Now, Lyrica? Oh yes... even at a lower dose 1st starting it had me running around my yard with my dog barefooted without a care like a 9 yr old little girl. Unfortunately lol - it became less effective and the Gabapentin I found worked much better for the nerve pain by taking my husband's one weekend I ran out of Lyrica. Called the Dr 1st thing Monday am and 1200 3Xs a day - it does affect my memory some... I hate it but what can I do? It began with an Autoimmune Disorder in 2017 one month after a flu and pneumonia jab... now - glad I don't have a kid because I'd NOT allow the 57 vaccines for newborns - 18. Insane and any parent wh9 does...? IDIOTS!

Thankfully I got a specialist sleep doctor, got on CPAP, and no longer have to deal with meds.

I have hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome and a host of comorbid conditions including syringomyelia which is a syrinx in the spinal cord that leads to cord damage. I had to go to a damn Suboxone clinic to finally get something stronger to help my pain. Even with it, and gabapentin, round the clock muscle relaxers for severe muscle spasms and Dystonia. Finally added a parkinson's med that is helping my dystonia. I am never ever not in very intense pain. Buprenorphine doesn't even take the pain away. It only softens the blow a bit. Life is hell for us with chronic pain. Addicts have made it so hard for us to get help. Doctors treat so many of us like we are med seeking. We just want for every single day of our lives to be so painful. The chronically ill club really sucks.

I don’t know if it’s just not good for that specific neuropathy, but I will never take it again. I had restless legs syndrome for years. It caused me to be sleep deprived along with many hours of leg pains. After trying any number of drugs which didn't work, finally a doc prescribed gabardine. It was like a miracle. I have been taking gaby, as I call it, for many years now. I am happy to report that it still works. I also have to say that I am very careful with it. I usually only take two a day (one at dinner and one before I go to bed). Every once in a while, I need another one when I can't fall asleep and my legs start into that nerve pain. I'm not sure how I would live without it.

My psychiatrist prescribes gabapentin to me. I have never felt euphoria from it but always have taken the proper dosage. My husband was prescribed it many years ago for pain relief and the terrible side effect he had was it changed his personality. He became very short tempered and always angry. I got fed up and somehow we linked it to gabapentin and when he stopped taking it his happy self was back. Apparently it's a rare side effect but it happens. Also, I am a fan of opioids because they are the only thing that makes my mom's life bearable. Yes she is addicted but she would kill herself from the pain if she didn't have that help. She's always still in pain but it takes the edge off. Who cares that she's addicted? She needs the meds. She isn't hurting anyone. She's an angel on earth who suffers greatly but still manages to smile and be a very loving person. My dad fought doctors when they tried to reduce her pain meds. He won for her thankfully and she still gets them. The CDC just put out a report basically saying they took opioids away from people when they should not have because of the opioid crisis causing people to turn to hard illegal drugs or suicide. I had abdominal surgery and the meds they gave weren't opiods and I suffered from so much pain and it was unnecessary. It makes me angry to think about it. My dad went to a town hall and warned that this would happen and he was even in the newspaper for saying that people would turn to street drugs or just kill themselves. It was in South Carolina. He was right. People are in pain and dying because they are denied the meds they need.

It made me so dizzy after 2 days use on the very little that you first use that i lost my balance and fell into the side of the house, leaving me with a couple of huge bruises. So i was taken off of it immediately. Years later, my black lab was prescribed Gabepentin after surgery. She also became extremely dizzy, couldn't walk right, and was taken off of it. If it works for some, then that's good. But I'd use caution when first prescribed this drug.
