General Brice Oligui Nguema, the current military ruler of Gabon, has caused quite a stir in West and Central Africa by making a surprising request to the military leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso to reconsider their decision of leaving the economic community of West African states Ecowas. This unexpected announcement has come as a shock to many as the three nations had recently declared their intention to withdraw from Ecowas with immediate effect. General Nguema made this plea during his visit to Abidjan in Ivory Coast, where he met with Alassane Ouattara, the president of Ivory Coast. The initial purpose of his visit was to seek support for lifting the African Union sanctions that have been imposed on his country Gabon since the coup d'état in August. Unlike the military leaders of Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, General Nguema's image has been relatively preserved in the international community following his coup that brought an end to the nearly 50 years of dynastic rule of the Bongo family. This is primarily due to his unwavering stance on the French presence and military cooperation agreements in Gabon, which has helped maintain his image in the international arena. But who exactly is General Nguema? Despite his reputation, will he be able to take back the current leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso into the Ecowas fold. Let’s find out in this brief video.
