I have written truths and wisdoms on messageboards, and now in YT comment sections, for 23 years now. From direct personal experience, and challenges to our established beliefs, is a great education aquired. Readers often despise experiencers---- and YT exemplifies this. A famous author complimented my work, and also taught me that authors suffer as ideas seem to have a shelf life. In those 23 years I have never been asked for an interview--- yet early in my writing journey, Ph.Ds used to frequent the coffeehouse I frequented for over 4 years. We had some wonderful conversations. One respected customer once told me that I was much more intelligent than her deceased husband's group of associates; he was the Chancellor of an East Coast University. She was 85 and still taking a class each quarter at Stanford. 😊 Life is a curious adventure.
My recent question online has been: *Was Jesus a Jewish Palestinian?" Dr. West referred to "Palistinian Jew, Jesus". Often, the Zeitgeist is influenced by unacknowledged outsiders not looking for attention but give a false impression that they are. Great thoughts are stolen by readers--- the intention of anonymous philosophers.
One of those "elders is supposed to be running for president. That does not happen unless he gets himself in front of regular people. What happened to all the talk about going to the people in "Trump "country. If he truly want the job as President he needs to be doing more work!
@@joylarson9040 Very true. And from humility comes wisdom. Sadly, readers can employ a false humility as they take the stage of conventional wisdom; though, is it really enduring wisdom? one of my first questions that I asked in the coffeehouse: "What is the difference between confidence and arrogance?" One aspect to a "Rock Star" is the gift to induce your fans to "project" their hidden desires for fame and fortune onto you. This will be an obstacle for Dr. West--- unlike Donald Trump who is gifted in that way of inducing "projection". Is Donald Trump truly "arrogant"?
Thank you, Katie & Aaron, for putting this together. We are all traumatised by the unfolding genocide beamed into our lives. Needed to listen to these two wise, compassionate men amidst the horror.
@pa_2600 Many Americans feel they have "souls", and that these so-called "souls" are wounded by the suffering of others. Especially when our government is creating the suffering in our names. And we're not allowed to speak up, as though we have no freedom of speech. But.. I'm sure you foreign Satanists are having a fun time.
@@Bovice..YT-handles-are-fn-dumbwitnessing the suffering of any human being can be traumatising for many people - but you have to be sensitive to feel this - which you are obviously not.
What a perfect warm blanket in a cold, vicious world! Humans cannot survive the horrific truth of the Middle East slaughter, the plight of Palestinians, the racist arrogance of Netanyahu and his cronies. To take an hour out of life and listen to wisdom, informed commentary in a context of possibility and earnest love was wonderful. Thank you Aaron and Katie. L'chaim!
@pa_2600 the mere Fact that we Continue this way TODAY with all our Social, Cultural, Technological, Scientific etc. Advancements is what makes it even more Vicious and Dire Now... that's why people like Steven Pinker who say that the World is better-off Today are simply WRONG. of course, in a lot of ways things are better. but the Continuing if these Man-Made Problems in times of so much Progress/Advancements is what makes it even WORSE Today.... 😕
Unfortunately, Israel does not have a role model of peace and humility. The US can hardly be a role model for any nation. Slaughtering over a million innocent Iraqi civilians and destroying their country based on a lie, voids the US of ever being a role model for peace and humility.
Pro-Israel rally recently in London. Did not hear any slanders against Palestinians. Not once. No hatred, no vitriol. Compared to the pro-terrorist rallies. Will never forget that I heard: "Gas the jews!" in Australia, in my life time. That was a disgrace.
@@angelrojo6466 you forgot to mention that there are more Jews in the pro Palestinian rallies than there are Jews in the pro Israel rallies. And it's Jews who are calling out the Israeli government as terrorists. What do you make of all that? I don't know what rallies from around the world you've seen, or where you're getting your information from, but I haven't seen 1 pro Hamas rally in any country. You have intellectual abandonment by claiming pro Palestinian rallies are pro terrorist rallies. I think you need a long break from the internet.
Gabor is a beauty. Aaron has that same calm certainty and humbleness as his dad has as he tackles controversial issues in his journalist career. And it bothers the special interests as his researched truth is irrefutable. Great humans serving humanity.
Yes, the apple fell right to the foot of the tree. Like father like son. Two great human beings Gabor and Aaron. Great talk. Professor West in his wheelhouse. Great talk.
Gabor, "it is not hope, it is possibility". I needed those words to keep me going today. It is so incredible hard to have an open heart these days. Thank you
The rally against anti-semitism recently in London. Did not hear any slanders against Palestinians. Not once. No hatred, no vitriol. Compared to the pro-terrorist rallies. Will never forget that I heard: "Gas the Jews!" in Australia, in my life time. That was a disgrace.
How does Cornel West recall so effortlessly names, dates, details, passages and stories? I ❤️it. This conversation blesses me greatly. I’m encouraged by the possibility of a better reality Cornel & Gabor speak of. We must all fail better. 💞
And what I took from it the possibility is already there: in them, in us. And that's how life is sustained in n the face & forces of destruction. Stop US imperialism which is doing the same with Greater Tigray in Ethiopia/Eritrea for instance, Greater Israel in the Middle East and the Holocaust of the Congo of 6 million deaths since 96...just so we can be addicted & depressed on our "smart" phones because we are landless. Every animal needs territory to eat from, rest & sleep on. Mother nature provides everything for free but man is making us pay using war to territory hoard & subjugate our landlessness.
It’s a great pleasure listening to these two intelligent and compassionate men, thank goodness Social Media platforms are promoting men like these two giants. Thank you Katie and Aaron for arranging this conversation and sharing it with us.
Thank you brothers - brothers and sisters, everyone who is participating in making this plight of the Palestinians visible in some way...thank you, thank you! You warm our hearts and make us not feel alone, as human beings! Much love and gratitude!
How often is the world allowed the opportunity to spend an our if our lives with these two men of distinction and wisdom. This is a moment in my life that I will treasure. Thank you both for the honor to be in your presence.
Disappointed by these two men. So much time focusing on what Israel did/didn't do. No time discussing the extreme Islamic group targeting Israeli's. They never speak about this in their talks on the subject. A very narrow discussion lacking nuance and diversity. Disappointed:( I guess they do not want to alienate their SJW audience. Pro-Israel rally recently in London. Did not hear any slanders against Palestinians. Not once. No hatred, no vitriol. Compared to the pro-terrorist rallies. Will never forget that I heard: "Gas the jews!" in Australia, in my life time. That was a disgrace.
@@angelrojo6466 17,001 (today, and counting) innocent dead slaughtered Palestinians and those remaining now subjected to no resources, no homes, no water, no food, many seriously injured, 24 hospitals bombed, no medical care, no siupplies, infrastructure destroyed, poisoned water, starvatioin, traumatized children forever scarred, infectious diseases emerging and so forth. Netanyahu has created his very own hell on earth in real time for all of us to see. His response is not 'proportional'. It is illegal and barbaric. Your point is moot. Just as no one has ever questioned the revolt of Nat Turner, the response of Hamas is understood. When you have nothing you have nothing to lose. The oppressor must pay. What goes around comes around. Israel's barbaric Apartheid state is a social experiment that must end. As Bibi points to future maps with no Palestinians on it it is clear that is not his endgame. As he continues to bomb civilians and shoot them at point blank range he is committing ever more war crimes. The discussion must concern itself with the greater horror, the one motivated out of greed and arrogance and hatred, the one creating HELL ON EARTH.
I myself am always a student when 2 people who are talking truth to power in the tradition of the oppressed and dispossessed of the world. In solidarity. Peace.
Its been an absolute pleasure listening to these two lovely gentlemen how wise and compassionate they are.. I agree with their remarks about the healing of music as it helped me a lot after my precious husband passed. My heart aches for the Palestinian people I really hope Israel and the atrocities they are committing are stopped as soon as possible. Wonderful people out there demonstrating for justice pity about certain governments that are staying silent and have yet to grow a backbone.
You may think as yourselves as “Elders” and “OGs” but I hope you amazing gentlemen know the importance and impact you both have on the youth of this world. I’ve introduced both of you to my children who are now in their 20s & 30s and they appreciate you just as much if not more than I do. I hold on to the possibility of the youth of this world. I’ve witnessed the cultural shift in them and it’s what keeps me going. Sending so much love and gratitude to you both.
Aaron & Katie: thanks for having Papa-Bear Maté converse with Doc West. West has suffered lately after dipping in that cesspool we call politics, and came out with an unfortunate stench (eg: the feud with Jimmy Dore). Papa-Bear Maté is able to make the spark in Doc West come out and shine :)
Thank you all for bringing this discussion to us all. It was wonderful to hear a discussion held at such a high intellectual level by two great and compassionate minds. This was a rarity in today's modern world.
The only thing wrong with this video is that it should be seen/heard by literally a thousand times the number of people who will see/hear it. As with most of the other comments I see, I too thank you, Katie & Aaron, for posting this & sending the link for it to my email address via my subscription to Useful Idiots. Keep up the GREAT work.
Yes, there are so many videos I just want people to see front right and centre on mainstream media. It is soooooo frustrating. I can't even say what I really think on social media
I am so grateful to listen to two great philosophers of our time. I majored in Philosophy and Government in my 40's some 30 years ago to gain more knowledge for my acting and theatre directing career.( to research and research) I am basically retired now, but I do agree that when you learn you remain young. I attended two protests for the Palestinians (the last one on one good leg!) and on Fridays I hand out Free Julian Assange pamphlets. It is as Roger Waters said, 'read, read, and read again'. Thank you.
I find it odd that a lot of people simply don't want to learn once they leave school. I'm guessing the school environment doesn't encourage a lifetime of learning. Today we have access to one of the greatest tools for learning, the internet, it seems silly to waste it
“The weight of this sad time we must obey. Speak what we feel not what we ought to say. The oldest hath borne most; we that are young Shall never see so much nor live so long.” Edgar at the end of King Lear. Thank you so much to the most beautiful wise brothers. May they long continue in their truth telling. I’m going to watch and learn again.
36:04 “I have such grief… and some of us channel that grief into activism but the grief is still there” “We must do that and all we can so that we are not numbed, our hearts are not hardened, and our conscience doesn’t become coursened” Ooof that hit me like a ton of bricks
Gabor Mate has a tendency to move me to tears without me understanding why. I know he has given me hope and healing. Cornel West also is rarely courageous and enlightening voice. He is such an inspiration. He once said Socrates flaw was his inability to cry and shed tears. This conversation certainly didn't fail to move me. I believe this is the kind of dialogue we need to inspire and kindle. I'm cheering for you from Oslo Norway.
Ohhhmygerd! That fed my soul y'all! Two lovely people, having the most fantastic loving conversations! I'm refusing to redirect my eyes from Gaza this time. Although it would be much easier to do so, for my mental health. I'm a disabled veteran with ptsd and a host of other problems that led me to Gabor years ago. I just love him so much. I didn't know much about Mr. West until I saw him speak on the occupation and genocide. So this was a particularly joyful treat for me, my heart and my mind! Ty Katie and Aaron! I watch EVERY episode ❤
Beautiful convo. Would LOVE to see a 1-on-1 between Dr mate and Norman finkelstein. Would be so fascinating to see dr mate’s emotional intelligence open up Dr finkelstein’s deep compassion where he doesn’t have to educate his interviewer on the facts.
I needed to listen to this so much, after seeing and hearing so much hate in the world I needed to remember that there are good people, loving people ❤ thank you.
“We live in a country in which words are mostly used to cover the sleeper, not to wake him up; and therefore, it seems to me, the adulation so cruelly proffered our elders has nothing to do with their achievement-which, I repeat, was mighty-but has to do with our impulse to look back on what we now imagine to have been a happier time. It is an adulation which has panic at the root.” ― James Baldwin
Really enjoyed this exchange of ideas. Without going into too much detail about the present horror in the world Gabor and Cornell explored possibilities that are barely ever covered in any kind of media about the psychology of what we're going through and the deep roots of humanity's problems. I'm glad for these two people that I've admired for some time now could share some company to recharge their own batteries to continue the difficult struggle of looking for and sharing painful truths.
I felt elevated listen to this exchange between wise minds and compassionate hearts. I didn't want it to end. Thank you for speaking so genuinely and truthfully. Thank you for your humanity.
This was an amazing video, it has filled my heart with warmth and happiness in these days of unbelievable pain and suffering in the middle east and across the world. Thank you both, what a wonderful world we could have if we had compassionate and intellectual men such as yourselves as leaders.
Omygod. What a wonderful gift. Since October 7, I've found it increasingly difficult to breathe, what with having a genocide livestreamed into my living room and all. I didn't even notice, but as this truce, this lull in the slaughter, has begun to take hold, I've been able to breathe again, if only for the moment (I know this conflict isn't over). But being allowed to experience this conversation, if only viscerally, has enabled me to laugh and smile for the first time in a while. Again, I know that this too shall pass. Two of my favorite minds and hearts. Thank you so much, Drs West and Mate, for a thanksgiving gift beyond my ability to express the value of. And thank you, Aaron and Katie.
why can't we have leaders such as these two ? why are we continually saddled with the wreckage o' human potential, those who deliberately puruse selfishness at the expense o' millions ?
I have enjoyed all your conversations and it was full of wisdom, humanity respect and most importantly love all human. Thank you both ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤👏👏👏
16:30 ~ Respecting the topic of being confident of the ground upon which one stands; I’d like to express my gratitude for this terminology. I’ve always found it difficult in the past to relate how I felt about those things of which I’m confident and how willingly ready I am to be made aware of the TRUTH about those things of which I’m not so confident. Here’s an anecdote that should help elucidate. Once when I was in attendance at a church service, while everyone quietly listened, the pastor asked how many of us liked to find out about being wrong. Nobody replied in the affirmative but me; and my reply was immediate. Since I stood alone, the attention of the entire congregation turned its focus on me, as if an explanation was expected; and without hesitation, I said quite simply: “If I’m wrong, I want to know about it so I can get right!” I think everyone was astonished at the direction from which I approached the question.. I just hope it gave some of them pause to reflect.
Thank you both 🙏 deep respect and thank you Aaron and Katie for organising this. This conversation brought me tears. It is such a horrendous time, perhaps like Dr Mate said, its not a comparison thing, but maybe the fact that its right here in our faces every day, it rips our souls to pieces and haunts our days. Whenever I look at any children now, photos of children or at my own grandson, I see the overlay of a Gazan child 😢 and children and then the continued cold heartedness, denial, mockery and cheer by those inflicting is just "evil" - and the witnessing of all in utter helplessness, eats at my soul. Yet its not about me, i'm not the one being bombed, maimed, holding my child in pieces, captured, tortured. Yet I feel as me. There is no separation. Yet the witnessing of the stark dehumanisation of another is the ultimate destruction to the core of humanity. There is such a deep deep grief and sadness for us humans, why have we not evolved? why do cycles of suffering and inflicting of it keep repeating itself. Why do humans not heal and learn and evolve. I guess that is the beauty and horror of free will. Yet everyday, like Dr Mate, all I can do is meditate. It realigns and restores me to source frequency, and I continue to hold the field. The field of love, compassion, peace, trust. I guess some call this prayer. Which is something I've noticed in the Palestinians, in all the horrors they just keep chanting their prayers to their Allah. However we each connect to our source of being, that is the source of strength, peace and trust. Trust that light will continue to shine brighter and brighter, and it will shift, as darkness is the absence of light 💚🕊
Gorgeous conversation, sustenance for the mind, soul & heart. Bringing to the fore the emotions, patterns and consequences of the grinding gears of lost empire, the healing salve of primordial impulse. Love you both, thank you.
The one in the left is running for president in the US, the problem is, it’s a vanity project, he doesn’t want to actually take a votes away from the “ lesser evil” brother Biden and be seen as a Ralph Nader spoiler. He is pretty good on this issue, but unfortunately he still seems stuck in his academic liberal bubble, he’s always promoted lesser evil Democrats. And if you followed his campaign, and how it was pretty much a secret, it says a lot about his character, and he’s basically pulling a Bernie and defrauding his supporters, just to go on some shows and feel relevant, but he doesn’t actually want to threaten power.
Lol. Yea but politics is a dirty, vicious game. The higher up you go the more vicious and dirty it gets. Some people are just not cut out for or willing to play in that game. Understandably.
@@garyluciani1082 well he shouldn't have run. he kind of spoiled his reputation a bit, at least a good chunk of the left will look at him with a side eye now. it's like he's cosplaying MLK revolutionary but doesn't want to take votes away from white moderate biden. i understand you still want to give him the more charitable view, that he's not cut throat enough for washington, i see him more as ego driven and it's unfair to his supporters who actually believe he's running a real campaign
This conversation is so incredibly profound and beautiful.❤️ What you are speaking to around musicians touching us, unsettling minds, empowering souls… So rich…
Listening to these two beautiful souls made me tear up a little. Thank you Cornel West and thank you Gabor Maté for the much needed conversation about Humanity and how we treat each other. ❤️&✌🏾 to all of you 🙏🏾.
