Recorded January 21, 2021
In conversation with musician and novelist Wesley Stace, author of Misfortune, By George, Wonder Kid and most recently Out Loud with dancer and choreographer Mark Morris
An actor renowned as much for his versatility as his depth, Gabriel Byrne has portrayed King Arthur, Satan, Pope Gregory X, Lord Byron, a heartless Irish-American gangster, a Viking chieftain, D’Artagnan the Musketeer, and an ersatz Keyser Söze, among hundreds of other screen and stage roles. He earned a Golden Globe Award and two Emmy nominations for his role as a self-doubting psychotherapist on HBO’s In Therapy, and was thrice nominated for Tony Awards for his roles in Eugene O’Neill’s plays. In Walking with Ghosts, Byrne traces his path as a boy wandering the outskirts of working-class Dublin, to his entrance and expulsion from the Catholic seminary, to his days in amateur theater that launched a 40-year career.

Seen Gabriel last night at at the Opera House in Wexford. Amazing that one man and a chair can capture and hold an audience as he did. Laughter & tears. Thank you For your generosity of your soul. 💙

I'm reading Walking With Ghosts and I have to say, it is such a lovely experience to read this book. I was surprised really. I had no idea Byrne was as eloquent, poetic and such a skilled writer. Also, what is notable about this book is the way he comes across, as this humble, level headed and decent person with a quiet, and gentle sense of self deprecating humor. Its a great book and I am loving every minute of reading it.

Thank you for such a great interview! I could listen to Gabriel telling stories about his life for hours on end so I'm thrilled to learn that he is writing a novel as well

I was so happy to be going to your play tonight in wexford with my beloved sister I knew I would be moved by your performance as you let us into your world through your vulnerability as an actor.. you know your ghosts well and helped me see some of mine and not fear them so much.. Janet ..

I have been waiting for this book since he wrote his first short autobiography, "Picture in my Head", in 1995. Going to Amazon right now!

My question about plays was very last minute, not planned. (I'm still thrilled it was asked.) It's fine to cast plays race-blind now. Now women play men, men played women for ages. Why not cast age-blind as well?
