Don't worry. You have a Dutch man here learning Gaelic and I intend to speak quite a bit before I visit your brèagha country. I Also have Scottish ancestors on my mother's side. Also I love languages. Problem is that most letters sound completely different than I'm used to. Could you get more into that like you did with "diotraicte" . The "a" and the "i" seem to be silent and "di" is dje and so is "te" at the end. Lol a bheil sounds like available. Connection there.

Hi Jason! Over the past 18 months or so I've found and fell in love with the music of Julie Fowlis, travelled 9 days through and around the Scottish Highlands and decided to try my hand at learning Scottish Gaelic. Duolingo's addition of Scottish Gaelic to its catalog was my catalyst to actually start the language attempt and more digging lead me to your RU-vid channel, and, as it happens, just today I found your website. The past 38 days (my standing Duolingo streak) had led me to assume that familiarity would be attainable, but competency would always be just beyond my grasp. I no longer believe that to be true. That is true this language is mostly spoken, but Latinized in writing, but Ogham is a early Medieval written form of Gaelic they had some like Rune stones but not in Younger and Elder Futhark or Medieval Futhark. Like you said math and the th seems silent, then you write grod and pronounce the d as a t so grot in Old English or Anglo-Saxon Futhark is basically Elder Futhark with dagaz or a d in it why the English word god now good and not gut or gott like German. So Younger Futhark had no dagaz so it is ᛏ᛬ᚦ, it is weird how German dropped the d sound when Elder Futhark was Old High German though Old English retains it. Though back to Gaelic I found out John in Ogham is Sean because they have no letter in Ogham like it. Though Medieval Futhark had a d like letter.

This is super good stuff! For those interested: môr sounds like the Welsh word mawr, which also means big and blasda reminds me of blasus, meaning tasty as well. Moreover, Welsh also lacks proper words for yes and no and the word order, at least from what I have seen so far, is also the same. And I think that Gaelic has mutations as well?!

I like the way you teach language. I think this is one of the fastest way to learn a new language. While learning Gàidhlig, I have learned that the spelling is “blasta” instead of “blasda”. Are there two ways to spell it (masculine vs feminine), the same way you have math/mhath? Thank you for teaching us!!!

Many thanks! 🙂 The only difference between them is that blasta with a D is the traditional spelling while the T is used in the modern spelling. There's no difference in meaning!

As an American of Scottish descent I’m very interested in learning the language of my ancestors. English and French is frustrating to learners because of the silent and other-pronounced letters and combinations (i.e. to, too, two). This is my difficulty with Gaelic. The way certain letter combinations are pronounced is a total mystery. Example: mhah is pronounced “va”! How did the original translators of Gaelic into English letters come up with these sound/letter combinations? BTW your channel and lesson style are great!

This is very interesting from a girl who is descended from a father who is Scot-Irish and a mother who is Honduran. I've been to both Scotland and Ireland, and am a working actress, currently struggling to incorporate a Scottish accent for a role right now. Hearing him say things to suggest correlating the words is very interesting to me. For example: Agus: To me, this sounds like haggis, a dish my Scottish family would make. I do not like it. So, my mind would want to think of it similar to the meaning of "Grod" Beag: As English is my primary language, I would hear this word and interpret the meaning as "big"; though, as a bilingual Spanish speaker, "Mor" makes sense to me as big, or more. Very interesting how languages meld and yet drift, at the same time. :)
