That’s perfect timing ! I am looking at avenger combo stand to build a menace arm and was also looking at chinese knock off. Matthews are just way too pricey here in europe. Thanks a ton again for your share.

American grip made in LA makes great stands! Everything rust in Hawaii huge Maintenance issues plus everyone wants to shoot on beach. I put silicon on all my stands not sure it helps but it don’t hurt. Ordering those wind up stands from Manforto soon. Thanks for your hard work all the time. Say no to the pole!

What a head ache, I hate working on beaches. Only thing I hate more is the snow, I'll never work in snow again! I would love to get my hands on some American grip. One of the camera assistants has a set of wheels for his trollies and recons they are the best he has ever had.

Now seeing this, thanks for an informative video. I was looking for a review on the Manfrotto 126 BSU which I bought used to combine with an Impact arm. Hoping this combo works in the studio.

I dunno but the Manfrotto 126 (heavy duty) with air cussion is doing a great job holding heavy lamps steady. My guess is that they‘ve refined the model over the years ….

Is there some confusion here? .. "stianless steel" is a solid material that is resistant to corrossion. it is steel with a % chromium in the alloy (mix of metals that create the raw material). "chrome plated steel" is mild steel with a thin layer of chromium on top (and maybe not good inside the tube) - the protective chromium cannot be scratched/worn/badly applied on "stainless steel", whereas it can on "chrome plated steel". Stainless steel is not a complete winner, however, as chromium plated mild steel can be 'stronger'. And yes you can get 'bad' stainless which has a low % of chromium and is cheaper and less corrosion resistant. The first (chinese stand) sound like it might be chrome plated mild steel not stainless.

Thanks for doing these videos. Was wondering what you make of the Avenger aluminium Combo stands? I don't have anything too heavy to mount, but would like to get a few stands for stuff like an Aputure Nova (with a modifier) and maybe to fly an 8x8 (indoors). I can borrow big heavy stands if id need them for one off situations. But I was also looking at the manfrotto bsu126 stands as a couple of general purpose ones.
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 3 года назад
I don't use aluminium combo stands. When I started I bought lots because I thought I was saving weight in my van. Because they are light weight I found I had to carry more shot bags to counter the weight of the lights. Even if the lights were low in the stands. So I found that when I went to steel stands I ended up with less shot bags in my van and actually less weight overall.

Hey, can you put your hands on some Mathews stands? Those are what I cut my teeth on. Also, I thought the lugs at the top of the leg were for storage. In my mentors truck, he had a couple racks that those lugs slipped into that held them nicely against the wall.

I’ve got a common grip issue I’ve been running into with my Kupo grip gear. The Gobo heads and sometimes the cardellini clamp just gets stuck and I have no way of plying them open. Currently have a gobo head permanently mounted to a cardellini. Any tips on avoiding this or even helping separate my now stuck gobo head and cardellini?
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 3 года назад
Cardellini clamps always get stuck regardless of brand, I have found to release I pull the stud in a circular action downwards or upwards (towards or away from me but in an ark). Or I give it a gentle tap, usually with another Cardellini. Stuck grip head, that's a pain! Only happed a few times to me, but with avenger jumbo grip heads. Spray some WD-40 or equivalent into the thread, but you may not be able to if it's jammed to tight. Then you need leverage to shift it, so run a steel pipe through the Cardellini and force it left to loosen. If you have a long enough rod one person can pull down on one side and the other can push up. Worst case I use a "persuader" (mallet or hamer) and bash the bar in the left to loosen direction. You only need it to shift a very small amount and it will be able to undo. A bit of lubricant on the threads every now and then will stop jamming.

Hi Andrew, Where did you find the Avenger mini Combo? And what`s the model name? I always tried to find them but the lowest Stand from Avenger with that Head I found was the A1010CS... But specially with Sliders where you wand to go low but still have the option to be ajustable, I would really like to have these mini Stands. Also with Lights when you don`t want to go all the way down to the floor but be generally low... Would be nice to know where to find them. By the way, mi Hi-rollers are also still marked "ARRI". greetings from Switzerland.
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 3 года назад
I think you can find them on B&H
@robertniessner554
@robertniessner554 3 года назад
Oliver, you can find them at MBF shop de for example - in the section Licht - Stative - Stahlstative But the A1010CS is already the lowest one. For a slider I am using tripods from slidekamera which can go much lower, but are heavier and more expensive than the mini combo

Are there any durability or longevity differences between a high quality heavy duty aluminum stand vs steel.
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 2 года назад
I started our with aluminium and ended up going to steel. They don't flex as much in the wind. I found I didn't save any weight having aluminium stands, because they were so too heavy with a light I ended up using additional shot bags to compensate

Would you consider Kupo a career investment? I'm considering their 4.2m combo stand or "cine" as they call it - half the price of the Matthews equivalent in NZ.
@gaffergear
@gaffergear Год назад
I must have 20 of them now, the only thing I think isn't as good is the feet. The plastic ends look like they may ware out faster, but they should only be a couple of dollars to replace in about 10 years time.
@EclipseSound

They also catch rust in studio-only environment? I wanted to get Manfrotto 270BSU with D650 boom, but went into JINBEI M8 wich is China made - it says "stainless steel" but now when you mention it - i dont know if they are not lying. But what i like about it is that they give you detachable wheels and baby-pin can be placed 90 degrees off from the main pole, and on top of that - its a boom hybrid stand. kadrik.com.ua/wa-data/public/shop/products/62/11/1162/images/2955/2955.970.jpg fripers.pl/o/big/statyw-oswietleniowy-jinbei-m8-z-ramieniem-boom.7593.1.jpg

Glad your Avenger stands have lasted you so long, I haven't really trusted Avenger because my intro to the brand was their C-stands. I found they put ball bearings in the gobo heads which countered the conventional wisdom that a weight on the arm will tighten the gobo head. The safety implications, especially with people arming out LED'S all the time, make me nervous >.> But seems their combos are good?

Much of what the Chinese are making nowadays is anything but the junk that some products may have been 10-20 years ago. But on the other hand, Manfrotto and many other previously well known brands seem to have gone downhill from what they were 20 years ago. I have a 20 year old Manfrotto tripod that's still operationally as good as new, though not visually, but last year I bought a Manfrotto video tripod and had to immediately send it back as it was so flimsy and poor quality. A total contrast to the Leofoto tripod I bought in lieu.
@brackets6127
@brackets6127 3 года назад
Agreed the latest from China is generally very good. Kupo is all China manufacture as is much of Manfrotto's range of tripods

Do you plan on creating a Paypal for donation? I find your channel to be immensely helpful and would love to give something back. You're reviews are by far the most thorough!
@gaffergear
@gaffergear 3 года назад
Somewhere down the track I will have a members site with a forum and on line help. One buck a month or something like that. But for the moment I can't find the time to set it up. I never thought the channel would be like this, it was only intended to show my clients my new gear. One random video every now and then and maybe 50 followers. But thank you.
3 года назад
@@gaffergear That's sounds like a great plan! But for me personally just a PayPal account with the donation thing setup would be sufficient. I would definitely send you some bucks to show my appreciation. And I would guess setting up a donation PayPal is relatively straight forward and does not require that much time. But I don't know if that is more complicated for your accounting though. The most astonishing thing is the level of detail you go into. Also the measurements of light accuracy are really helpful. And you share a lot of knowledge. For example the video about HMIs was great for someone like me who never touched one of these things. If I'll rent one out I will make sure to watch your video before to have a good primer. One small idea: I like the cards with basic goods/bads/verdict infos like Curtis Judd over at Learn Light And Sound does (Example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mfZ5M5VfS1U.html). It's a one page summary of the review. And for me as a viewer it is helpful to read in about one minute if this product is something that interests me. If yes, I watch the full video and know, that this will be time that is good spent. If not I skip this one. This saves me a lot of time skipping through a video to find out if this product is interesting. Don't know how other think about it. And it is a little bit of extra work I guess. I'd rather take your videos without a summary than your videos with a summary but at a lesser frequency, only because this summary adds too much work for you. Cheers from Germany!
