smallrig are a well known brand for camera rigging stuff, i own a bunch of their products and have never been disapointed, interesting to see them venture into lighting. i could see these come in handy for the ole "hey can i get a tiny amount of light in this foreground element without ruining everything else please?" you end up building up an entire apurture 60x / dedo just to run it at 1% with a stupid amount of blackwrap on it.

If you buy the Lee filter catalogue you get over 250 color gels to use with this. It's the perfect size to cut it in half and get 2 of each (3.8 x 3.8mm). I bought this at the end of last year and, although one of them had to be replaced, they're pretty great. Intelligent of you, Andrew, to not review everything that comes out, but only what you think might be of interest to people who already own basic stuff.

It looks like Small Rig are following Tilta into manufacturing of COB lights and RGBWW pocket lights and other camera accessories. So strange to think that Kessler was the 'go-to' company for camera rigs until Small Rig stole that market away from them. Thanks for the review Andrew 👍🏻👍🏻

I'd love to see these put to use on an actual set. I'm guessing they might come in handy for throwing a few pools of light on background objects for interview setups....but it's one more piece of kit to keep charged and bring along with somewhat limited uses. Thanks for checking them out for us.

I came across these while researching the impressive but heinously expensive Lume Cube kits. Thought this version might only be good for the attachments, but gaining hope that the units themselves might be part a good starter kit. I'm a wannabe enthusiast guerrilla narrative filmmaker; these suit the small scale intimate stuff I want to do. Whether I go with this kit or not, great no-nonsense approach in the review of it that'll bring me back for more ; so few show, rather than tell. Ironic, since it's a cornerstone of visual storytelling. Great mix of the practical & the key tech data; the Curtis Judd of lighting info-reviewers...lol.. Liked & subbed with gratitude. Good on ya, I believe is the expression.

Look incredible value for money. though I'm seeing a US price of $110 not $80. I have the Godox WL4B which is about 50% more expensive and doesn't come with all the modifiers, just the dome diffuser. It is, however, 4W and IPX8 waterproof. It has three 1/4 inch mounting points and the back is magnetic. It supports bluetooth phone APP control. Thank you very much for the review, interesting, thorough and to the point as always.

These are pretty ubiquitous lights. Think it's one of those wholesale items a bunch companies rebrand. That said, I've only ever seen the ones sold in America by Promaster, and only as a one light kit, and it costs $50-$60, so this Smallrig kit is a pretty darn good deal.

Very small eyelight… unless you bounce it into something?
@alexblackmore7744
@alexblackmore7744 2 года назад
@@Cagliostro85 the small size is precisely why it's useful for close ups - it adds just a glint to the eye. Back in the day we used to use PAG lights for effectively the same purpose (little 10-30w lamped lights designed for on camera use for reporters). They were handy before LED as they'd run off D-tap and were dimmable, so you could squeeze them into little areas much like these and also use them as tiny eye lights when close up - it was a fairly common technique back in the 80s in particular. I still have a few knocking about somewhere, they weren't an every day tool but they were a useful little one on occasion.
@Cagliostro85
@Cagliostro85 2 года назад
@@alexblackmore7744 i don’t doubt that a small point source would be visible in the eye… I guess it’s just a matter of taste but for me, a good eye light is larger and doesn’t create hard shadows (from the nose, eyelashes etc.) I would see them being more useful for some bg accents or to fill small spaces (car, or other vehicle at night). But again… matter of taste, not knocking your application of it.
@alexblackmore7744
@alexblackmore7744 2 года назад
@@Cagliostro85 these wouldn't be powerful enough to overpower your average key or fill (especially at their lowest output). You'd be using it solely for the reflection so there's no need for the output to be high (for that anyway). That said as with PAG lights I certainly wouldn't use them in all cases. Different eye lights for different effects, sometimes you want a nice big one, sometimes you just want that glint. It's another trick for the toolbox at the end of the day. 🙂 As you say, accent lighting is a perfectly good use of them as well, likewise used to use PAG lights for that purpose back in the day but these are even smaller. They're a nifty little thing to throw in the ol' toolbag either way!
