Gaffer & Gear 230 - PROLYCHT Orion 675
In this episode I look at the PROLYCHT Orion 675. This is a full color gamut RGBACL light with rain protection, CRMX, and a robust solid construction.

You are so right. The 675 is incredibly built. The one thing I'd add is how nicely this light replaces 2K tungsten units. Several truck owners have been purchasing multiple 675 from us and swapping out their old tungsten units, it's just more practical to have such a high quality tungsten and RGBACL all the time, also brighter and easier to manage than any ballasted 1.2K HMI, and the 675 only pulls about 6 amps. The demo 675 has become a standard at the Hot Rod Cameras showroom in Burbank and is probably now the most popular light for comparing COB lighting instruments from different manufacturers. Highly recommend!

I own a few 675s now and yep I'm also a "lives with the fresnel" category style of person. Moderately has replaced my Mole 2K Tungstens in my mind and I do enjoy shaping the beam into a fabric via the fresnel. Great review as always. Minor quibbles, but all stuff that can be improved upon.

thanks for taking the time to make this one. its one of my favorite lights I have, and ive only been using it with the reflector. I was holding off of the fresnel purchase, but thats gonna change after seeing those readings. Love the construction of this unit its a tank, and love internal ballast. You can ask anyone to wrap or set this up since its so easy. my only con for me is the lcoation of the power switch, since its on thefloor, i have had to tape it to leave it in the ON position, as sometimes even moving the light , the switch would drag and eventually turn off. but love the unit!

Cracking review as usual. Have had my 675 FS for around 9 months and are go to for me, lack of ballast makes for fast deployment. I have not had any Lumen radio issues. One think I know Andrew is not keen on - Apps - but the Chromalink is worth a good look particularly with the upcoming Accsoon Seemo Pro SDI - essentially a unit that allows you to see the camera view on an iPad - but with the Prolycht and Dedo lights this opens up virtual production possibilities. Keep up the good work Andrew Lock

Good stuff! Looks like it still performs really well when dimmed down to 5% - an improvement over the 300FS

I just ordered the extended legs and am looking forward to having clearance for the fresnel, which will let us treat it more like a durable HMI. I forgot about those 1/4 threads, other than future accessories, I'm sure people will come up with cool uses like extra rigging points, holding clamps, mounting gopros etc.

I would be interested to see some reviews of the Dedolight accessories. I'm in the same camp, I really like the 675 with the fresnel. Surprised to hear it's so much more efficient than the Nanlite Projector, which I also own and use with the 300. I would love for the 300 to have the locking mount and CRMX (had to add a receiver), just because it's nice to have something lighter. Pretty much the only flaw the 675t has is the weight, getting in on a stand is a bit of.a balancing job.

when you go from hue to CCT. You can just do a CCT value in hue and leave the crossfade on RGBACL. makes the fade a lot easier. Did this with an effect the DP wanted. Cyan 30 to 3200k then back to cyan 30. So I did all values in "RGBACL mode" the fade is a lot better.

Another fantastic video! I'm always blown away by the observation and detail you provide! Speaking of comparison, I understand no datasheet can communicate the nuances these units have but do you have one that lays out their numerical data anywhere? Such as max wattage, lux @3m at each CCT/HSI, SSI, TM-30 RF, DMX/CRMX/Na, and price? I know BH has their "comparison" system but theyre not nearly as in depth as you are.

Thank you for your work!! Been waiting for this review! Would love an outputreading of the 675 with the aputure narrow dish. I own the orion 675 but no optical accessories. It would be amazing to see you compare the prolycht fresnel with the dedo fresnel and the dedo PB adapter!!

Dedo makes projectors and intensifiers for the Orion but not a fresnel.

how do you feel this light compares to the aputure pro line? is there a particular aputure fixture that you feel would go head to head with this one?

Excellent review, thanks, Andrew. I own this light and thought it would be brighter than my Aputure 300DMII for an outdoor interview. Though it’s indeed much brighter when comparing each with their reflector, once both are diffused through a 4’ full-grid somehow the 300DMII is actually slightly brighter! 1100 lux for the 300DMII vs. 1000 lux for the 675 (medium reflector) @ 8’. With a half-grid, the 675 with medium reflector is barely brighter by a couple hundred lux. The dropoff from the 675 once diffused perplexed and disappointed me. Have you tried using this light diffused as an outdoor interview key on a sunny day? Or maybe you'd go right to something more powerful?
@gaffergear
@gaffergear Год назад
I would go straight to my 1200s

@@gaffergear Thanks. Yeah, next time I'll rent a 1200.
@mustafaronyzeno4162
@mustafaronyzeno4162 Год назад
That is perplexing and bizarre. Physics-wise I can't think of anything that would make the diffusion cut different amounts of lights depending on the light, unless it's something like the diffusion affecting certain wavelengths more than others type of thing, which apples to apples still wouldn't change between lights. @gaffergear, have you ever seen anything like that?
@ImageGeneration
@ImageGeneration Год назад
@@mustafaronyzeno4162 I'm curious too. The reflectors I tested on both lights were 55 degrees. Without diffusion, the Orion measured 20K lux to the Aputure's 4K lux at 10'. As diffusion is added, the Orion loses a massive proportion of its output compared to the Aputure.
